"The worst sign of bad controls is when you have trouble doing something that would actually be easier to do in real life." This. A thousand times this. I don't want to trade that in for walking ability, though.

The reason why PS1 games have that weird texture warping is because it wasn't a 3d console. Sure the PS1 could handle 3d geometry, but it didn't RENDER in 3d. It took the polygons of 3d models and projected them onto a 2d screen space. It then performed linear interpolation on the texture coordinates. This technique is called "Affine Texture Mapping". It is very much like "mode 7" graphics on the SNES, but with polygons instead of 2d backgrounds.
@Demonanimator6 жыл бұрын
Nightshade Well that explains why i even find texture warping in Doom and Doom 2 for Gameboy Advance. It also being a 32 bit system.

If anyone is interested the walls are moving because the ps1 processor was based in integer arithmetic instead of floating point, so they could not represent numbers with a point! So every time the player sees something in an angle that should have one the number rounds up to the nearest integer, that's why movement is so strange in ps1 games or why sometimes static things appear to move

The texture warping issue happens on a lot of PlayStation games, though programs usually do their best to hide it. It has to do with the fact that the PlayStation can't work with floating point numbers, and only integers, so you get this fucked up effect.
@ryantimony66927 жыл бұрын
Michael MacEachern this.
@EgonOlsen717 жыл бұрын
Michael MacEachern Not exactly. It's actually because the PS1 has no perspective correction for textures, it's using simple affine texture mapping like very early software renderers in the PC.

In addition, it didn't have perspective-correct texture mapping and z-buffering, which lead to texture not being mapped correctly and bad triangles.clipping.

+A2Z83 Yep. 3D game design had to go through some awful growing pains to get where we are now. That era definitely included the PS1. Even though I love the PS1 library for its eclectic releases (I LOVE PS1 JRPGs) many of those titles don't hold up. I can usually look past the flaws of the era though. However, for every Metal Gear Solid, there is a truckload of shite standing in its wake.

If anyone thinks I was saying Andromeda is a masterpiece was anything but sarcastic, I am sorry to disappoint you, that game was atrocious. It was so bad it made Mass Effect 3 look goo- actually no. Mass Effect 3 is more than a bad game, it's an affront to the men and women who have endured berating parents for years and years, constantly telling them they're throwing their lives away, endlessly grounding punishing and taking away their console, as these very men and women poured the blood and sweat in tears into a medium that betrayed them.

I have no idea how you were invisioning that, but when I read what you wrote, I tried to imagine how that would work out. The image that sprang to mind was of The Nerd reaching the top of the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial, looking up at it with a look of bewildered horror on his face,; And then when the image pans around so the audience can see the object of his apparent shock and discust, we see that instead of Abraham Lincoln sitting at the throne... It's a statue of Cooper Folly. :O nnNNNNNOOOOOOOOOooOOoooOooo!!!...

What is being described is what is known as affine texture warping. You're right about it's prevalence in 3D Playstation games due to the Playstation not being very capable of taking depth information in account when mapping textures to polygons.

3:55 Actually, the majority of 3D Playstation games had this graphical glitch. This can even be seen in classic games such as Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon. In fact, the same thing can happen with 3D Sega Saturn games. I don't know what causes it, but I think it has something to do with the limitations of the hardware. Also, Doom is actually a 2D game in design. Seriously. Look it up. It's actually quite interesting.
@keithrichards85267 жыл бұрын
Super Game Kid Productions He was joking about DOOM because warping walls like that would fit in with the hellish/horror motif. Like it's an effect they would have probably had in DOOM, considering a lot of wall textures were twisted looking and some had scrolling faces.
@Nicholas_Steel7 жыл бұрын
The PS1 hardware uses integer values for determining the positions of visual assets, the lack of decimal places causes things to "snap" from position to position as the camera moves.
