I first encountered this marvelous little gem when it was originally released as the top billing of a drive-in theater triple- or quadruple-feature of science fiction and horror movies, mostly of C-grade and lower quality. I think the others included “Night of the Blood Beast” and “It (a gigantic walking carrot-top from Venus) Conquered the World”. The other films preceded this one, no doubt to keep patrons from departing early. My girlfriend at the time and I enjoyed laughing at and ridiculing the other movies, between romantic interludes (quite chaste and innocent by today’s standards, or even those days, I hasten to add), as was common with teenagers of the day at drive-ins. Then this film came on, and I was immediately riveted by it. This, I knew, was something special. My girlfriend, on the other hand, while she exhibited patience, seemed mildly miffed that my attentions had wandered so completely away from her - that is, until SHE also fell under its sway and commenced watching in rapt attention. Picture the scene, if you will: two 60s teens in a car (this was the era of bench seating), having slid close together previously, now gradually sliding apart, each enraptured in their own way by the spell Mario Bava and his crew of actors and imaginative artisans weaved on the huge outdoor screen before them. Even more remarkable, perhaps, was that she and I babbled excitedly (probably me more than her) about “Planet of the Vampires” all the way, as I drove her back home. Well, what else could I do but eventually marry that girl? She had such discerning taste in movies and men (he said, humbly). After all these years, we are still together, though I have watched PotV many more times than she has since that night in 1965. Let me just add that I think the World Science Fiction Society should award you a special Hugo for your outstanding contributions to appreciating the visual form of the genre throughout its history. In addition, if TCM isn’t thinking of hiring you as one of their co-hosts, they simply aren’t paying close enough attention to the best film historian and critic on KZbin. Someone really ought to clue them in. Thank you for reviewing this minor classic with your usual adroit insight and depth. P.S. I can’t believe how long it took me to catch on to your collar gag. Ha! Nice touch!

It is so nice to have a review from a film enthusiast who appreciates the beauty and artistry of movie making with limited means. Mario Bava was an artist with camera, lighting, & effects in using every tool he had as a film maker he was a true master. I was happy to see the points of inspiration for Alien highlighted in your review of Planet of the Vampires. Thanks for another wonderful review and the recommendation of the IB Melchior book by Robert Skotak.

I'm so glad you decided to devote an entire post to this particular film a favorite from my childhood. The rising of the dead from their graves is still quite nightmarish to me. Very Sullivan did quite a few Italian and German films during this period. I'd recommend a Sullivan film called Pyro another favorite from my childhood.

A very creepy film. Bava's love of using gels of primary colors is in full force here, similar to "Sei Donne per l'assessino" the year before. It's eerie and dreamlike and overcomes its small budget to be one of those films that remains in one's mind long after viewing.

Hi Jerome. I bought this one on dvd eons ago and haven't watched it in eons but happily it is still on my shelf and I will give it another spin soon thanks to your review. Of course, Bava never backed away from having performers in "birthday suits" or at least mixing violence and sexuality in the "Euro Trash" tradition. I do have pretty good memories of his "Black Sabbath" with Boris Karloff.

Thanks for the review. Another film I had totally forgot about, till now. This used to show up way back when on "Creature Double Feature" which was broadcast out of Boston at the time. Saw this as a kid couple times and never picked up on the twist ending until years later. The images of the people rising from the graves with plastic wrap was always eerie. Also the costumes had the collar, and the helmets looked somewhat like the typical "dracula widow's peak" on their heads. Thanks again, best to You Jerome D5

The planet surface, dark, barren and foggy with weird winds is obviously setting the mood that Ridley Scott wanted. The scene in the alien ship is hypnotic, with the pulsating light that almost gives the alien skull the appearance of sentience and the strange generator sounds that start beating like a sort of subliminal music as the camera looks down the ever decreasing circles of the open hatchways. The sheer artistry of this scene makes it easily the equal of the space jockey scene from "Alien".

The plot twist at the end was actually taken from a old Twilight Zone the original series called Third from the Sun it came out in 1950! The basic plot is you have a scientists working on weapons of mass destruction preparing for an all-out nuclear war with another government on the planet for the diametrically opposed political structure, which you assume is the Soviet Union because you assume that these are Americans and of course they're not, they steal a spaceship to leave the plant and go to what they believe is a civilization that's vastly different from theirs and of course when they get there you realize it's Earth.

Well the film is slow in parts, it has a really good production design and camera work that is used for it. The costumes are memorable and the ending is memorable. For me it is right up there with the closing scene to Goki The Body Snatcher from Hell (which I know you didn't care for all that much). You should pop the collar up though whenever you review a vampire flick though. You know...to keep safe and all from "creatures of the night" as Lugosi would remark. It is nice to see someone look at these films and not completely eviscerate them and nitpick them to death. Sometimes...a movie is just a movie. :)

I saw this movie on TV long ago and remember being creeped out by the corpses rising out of the graves. I think it was because of them pulling the plastic shrouds off of themselves. Edit: The gun at 11:50 reminded me of the guns in Wild Wild Planet. That too had what I later referred to as the cigarette lighter guns. Considering that they were both Italian SF movies, that may have been a cinematic style. Or it may have been a way to avoid the special effects cost of adding a laser gun effect.

Great review. I never knew this movie existed until a couple years ago and enjoyed the strange, creepy vibe of it. The lighting and feel of the movie reminded me of the original Star Trek episodes Catspaw and Metamorphosis. Interestingly, after your video a video about Gene Roddenberry with William Shatter narrating played.

I've given this movie a second look tonight. Not much to say about the movie itself that hasn't already been covered in your excellent review and other comments here, but something came to mind while watching that may be of interest... [7:38] regarding your mum's theory about the elaborate grave sealing material... It occurred to me that the graves are made outside the 2nd ship, before they make their way back to their own ship. The captain comments on how the 2nd ship is damaged beyond repair and won't be leaving the planet. This cuts to the next scene with the graves having been made. Perhaps the graves and markers have been made from salvaged parts of the 2nd ship? The graves themselves are just holes dug in the ground with what looks like the ship's wall panels simply placed over the top, and the markers also look like they could be part of the ship's design. Later on, they make another grave (for Bert) outside their own ship. This time the lid is made from two separate smaller wall panels overlapped, and the grave marker is of a different design to the previous ones, looking distinctively like a support buttress. It makes logical sense that these are makeshift. I've clearly thought this through in great detail 🤦

Bravo, Jerome! Doing a Mario Bava movie is a nice surprise. He made a lot of movies, mainly on very low budgets and made up for it with astounding cinematography and pure inventiveness. May I suggest, if you're in the mood for atmospheric horror, a little thing called Black Sunday or if you would rather some fun silliness, Danger, Diabolik. These are both style over substance and do it in grand fashion. Thanks again for another great analysis.

I might've been the first commenter who suggested this on the IT review (or at least one of the earliest) and I'm glad to say thanks, knockout review. Perfect balance of exhaustive research and fresh insights. Side note: I think the film vindicates judicious use of the zoom technique, which Bava along with many European directors (most notoriously Jess Franco) took much critical drubbing over. Without spoilers I'll just say the crash zooms at particular moments intensely punctuate the shock moments.

Those grave markers are sort of a spin off/remainder from an earlier script in which the second ship has incurred a fair amount of damage: These space explorers use pieces of that ship as improvised markers. Another excellent review! I have always had this film on my radar, but have put off acquiring it largely because of a single factor. SPOILER AHEAD: If you haven't seen the movie yet, please stop reading now if you don't want to read about how the movie ends..........okay, a couple reviews I've read here and there indicate that the movie has a downer of an ending with a very negative twist. Although I am a major horror fan, I have never been fond of horror films which conclude with evil winning out over good. I realize for some horror fans this is almost an expected feature, one reason so many films in this genre conclude with the infamous "Final Shock" in which a more upbeat ending may be suddenly undercut by a final scene which, though sometimes coming totally out of left field and making no sense whatsoever, snatches defeat from the jaws of victory and inflicts some horrific punishment upon our protagonists...just because. I don't know for sure that is the case with this movie, but as I say a few reviews over the years have put that idea in my head and so I've been reluctant to invest either my time or money into watching what I suspect I might otherwise find a very enjoyable film. I just don't come away with a good feeling about a movie like this if the powers of Evil are permitted to hold sway at the end. Be all that as it may, your review is excellent and does make me consider giving this one a try anyhow. Thanks for all your efforts!

*nothing explicitly spoilerish in this reply, but still...* Yes, in many cases I don't like to see evil triumph over good in movies (or in books or in real life) either. That said, I didn't feel dismayed over this ending. Part of it is the way the actors play it with a slight touch of dry amusement instead of malevolence. And while it's a twist, it's not a last-minute thing that pops out of nowhere. As the scene unfolds and you start to realize what's happened, there's an "ah-ha!" moment (provided no one's spoiled it for you). I appreciated how it was pulled off. Someone else here referred to it as a Twilight Zone-type ending, and that's a good way to put it. It's a dark twist, but it's not particularly devastating for the viewer. There is a way they could have made it an even bigger twist (which I believe was the original intention), and I personally wouldn't have cared for that outcome. I have no idea if this is a helpful answer or not... I'm glad you enjoyed the video, though, and if you do decide to watch the film, I hope you enjoy that too!

I missed this movie since I was 14 when it came out, and was reading more SF since books were better overall than movies. I lived 12 miles away from the nearest town in my teen years, so spent more time reading library books. I found this movie several months ago on KZbin late one night while looking for a good entertaining old space opera. I liked the oppressive exteriors with the fog and various colors on the rocks. This is a good solid entertaining movie with plenty of atmosphere, decent acting and plot. The zombies are a bonus!

Great review. I saw this movie long enough ago that I only remembered a few details (the giant skeleton at the table, the cool mirror effects, etc.) and have always meant to go back and check it out again. Now you've made me want to do it right away. Bava's effects background always made for some good visuals. I would also recommend *Black Sabbath* aka *The Three Faces of Fear,* if you haven't seen it. I good, creepy Bava anthology with Boris Karloff. There are two versions of it though; I would recommend looking for the Italian original, because the American re-cut changes certain things in such a way that they no longer make any sense.

This was a very comprehensive an interesting review of this old but almost classic Sci-Fi movie. The first time I saw it was as a teen on a late night TV channel, and I too was amazed at the futuristic gizmos that the crew used. In some ways this film was of ahead of it's time considering when it was made. Women were really empowered in the plot and got to fight the vampire like former crewmates. Unfortunately one of them ended up getting blasted in the back and died horribly. Witty and nice touch on your part with the upturned collar halfway though the review. Hope you review more vintage Sci-fi in the future

Good Review. I liked Mario Bava in the Italian movie Black Sabbath starring Boris Karloff- 1963. This movie was also reflective of his Italian style of horror. Barry Sullivan was in the 1950s Tv shows: Harbor Master and the Tall Man ( tv western). Barry Sullivan was in several western movies and early 50s drama movies. Based on his history of westerns and American dramas this Sci Fi movie was completely out of character for him. Barry Sullivan’s best movie in my opinion was Strategic Air Command starring Jimmy Stewart. A personal observation: your high collar was a nice touch to the movie review high collar costumes of the movie

Planet of the Vampires is such a strange film, it shouldn't be good, or as good as it is but it is actually good lol, it has its own unique style or it did until it influenced so many films after, you were absolutely clear during your 'It! The terror from Beyond Space review ( still laugh whenever you say the title, it's a great title, can't help but say it with gusto lol) that it was an influence on Alien, and it was clear you didn't say it was the only influence on Alien. I need to get that Skotak Melchior book, it's sounds like a really great read, It was an interview with Director Joe Dante that I randomly watched where he was discussing Planet of the Vampires and it made me decide to search it out, I'd heard of it but didn't really know much about it. I recognized Barry Sullivan from 'from various films but 'The Gangster 1947 is the one I tended to think of when I pictured him, I thought it was ok but he was good in it, it too kinda has a unique visual style. The noisy ship decks are both funny and amazing, I feel if the Nostromo had decks that noisy it may have been helpful during the Alien attack, clink, clink, clink, 🗣 listen! It's on deck two, although if you're a late night snacker sneakily raiding the kitchen would be a problem.....clink, clink, clink, 🗣hey! you better not touch my rations............👞👞clink, clink. The space suit is also very eye catching, I wonder did it influence the first X-Men film because theres definite similarities, well except for the amazing collars, your collar bit was so funny, played it straight masterfully, you're in good company > upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8c/Title_page_William_Shakespeare%27s_First_Folio_1623.jpg Lol. I've only seen a couple of episodes of Password but I really liked it and will watch more, I've watched tons of What's My Line, that one is absolutely worth a watch, love it! I've also checked out some Jack Benny sketch clips and came to the realisation I could probably survive in the 50's/60's lol, I've been watching a lot of Dick Cavett interviews also, KZbin rabbit hole lol. ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

Hey, the suits do bear a similarity to the X-Men costumes! It's been so long since I saw that movie that those were totally off my radar. I also watched the Password week with John Forsythe and Barbara Rush (he was particularly good at it) and I plan to watch more. I don't know, the clever wordplay really tickles my fancy, and then when they accidentally mislead their partner, the results are hilarious. I love the celebrity guest appearances from What's My Line! The Yul Brynner one is possibly my favorite. I've gone down that rabbit hole, and the Dick Cavett rabbit hole, quite a few times myself. :D

A great, creepy movie with fantastic special effects for its time, “Planet of the Vampires” is one of the best Italian sf movies. The ending is shocking, there’s a surprising amount of gore and horror. Along with the aforementioned “IT! The Terror from Beyond Space” and “Queen of Blood,” it heavily influenced “Alien.” Highly recommended.

I don't know if all older Italian films were dubbed, but most were. They just didn't use live sound, so everyone was dubbed - including the Italian actors. Most of the time, they didn't dub themselves on the Italian versions. So, I don't mind watching American versions of these films because the English-speaking actors often did dub themselves. I saw an interview with Dario Argento and he was saying that the first time he made a movie with live sound was when he went to America to make a movie in 1990. I've been watching many films from Italy lately. I've gotten interested in a genre called Giallo, which is "yellow" in Italian. Wonder if you've heard of those movies? However, it refers to the yellow covers of old mystery/thriller books in Italy. Gialli are murder mystery movies with and extra horror element thrown in. And more violence as you get into the seventies - along with nudity and sexy situations. Mario Bava is often credited with making the first Giallo, which is the Evil Eye (or the Girl Who Knew too Much). I just saw that movie and it was pretty good. I also saw this movie for the first time and I like this too. One problem that I have with this movie is that when they are having the G-force problem in the beginning is that the 50+ captain is the only one who can function. The rest of the cast are young adults in their prime, yet this aging, out-of-shape guy is the strongest? He also seemed like the only one who wasn't possessed in the beginning. I am in the process of watching some other Mario Bava movies and some more Gialli. I think you could like some of these movies. Since you don't always like the really nasty stuff, there are definitely some movies to avoid as they are quite violent. But a good Giallo is a murder mystery which keeps you guessing. Some of these movies have a supernatural element along with the mystery elements, so they are not "true" Gialli. Suspiria by Argento, which shows up on many horror film favorite lists, is an example of this. It has a couple violent scenes, but the movie is not overly violent. It is creepy, though. It is also beautifully shot and is a treat on the eyes. I would definitely recommend watching that movie quite highly. Argento was a big fan of Hitchcock and he tried to emulate him. Many of Argento films are shot wonderfully. SPOILER ALERT. One last thing I wanted to mention about the Planet of the Vampires is that it most definitely does NOT take place in the future. It takes place in the present day - well, at least 1964-5 when it was shot and released. Think back to the ending. There is a quick scene/shot in reference to the twist you mention that gives this away. Thanks for "listening" again.

I really like how you wear your shirt coller throughout most of the video, it does look like a vampire. Was that planned or happenstance? The King's Academy just released their double cast production of Into the Woods and it's now one of my favorite musicals. I'd love to read your thoughts on it if you see it. It really makes my day to read your comments on the musicals they do:)

Oh, I picked that shirt on purpose! :) (It's one my mom used to wear back in the day, actually. Not as old as the movie, but up there!) I thought their version of Into the Woods was amazing! I know a few of the songs, but I've never really gotten into the show itself. I found their production incredibly engaging, though! It came across as so much more vibrant than the film that was made a few years ago. The costumes in particular were great (especially for the ladies), and while a lot of their productions have wowed with sets that were way better than those of your average high school musical, they went with a simpler design here and it worked. The only disappointment is that so many of the featured students graduated this spring, so they won't be around for future shows. I have no doubt there will be more talent coming up (and I think Red Riding Hood will be a junior, so she'll still be around; I was glad to see her get a sizable part because she gave a fantastic performance of "She Used to Be Mine" from Waitress last year.). But the familiar faces will be missed as they go on to bigger and better things, I'm sure.

I think you will get one more chance to see these seniors shine. Into the Woods was actually the second to last show they did this past school year. They also did Les Miserables in May and I'm pretty sure they will be posting that production as well.

Rome, thank you. I don't have much to contribute except to say that I found it creepy, moody, and enjoyable, a good movie to return to every once in a great while. I still rather wish, what with all those high-collared black leather jackets, that someone could have ridden around on a motorcycle, but that may have been too much to ask. Owl be seeing you.

Bava was a wizard on a low budget,creating money shots with just color and lighting. Black Sabbath(the italian version),and Kill Baby Kill are my favorites, but really like all his 60s films..1970s not so much except for Lisa and the Devil,a return to the gothic style, and Rabid Dogs ,a true suspence thrill.

@Weiselberry
@Weiselberry 3 жыл бұрын
Long story short (and I mean long, since I've been dithering over this for a few years), I ended up not going public with a Patreon page simply because I couldn't decide on the specifics. On Ko-fi, supporters are free to give however much they want (no minimum or tier levels) at whatever time they want (not a payment per month or per video). I know Patreon is the more widely used service, and it's arguably the more lucrative choice for a business-savvy person, but after giving it a lot of thought, Ko-fi was a better fit as far as what I was comfortable with.

I don't know why you don't want to spoil the ending. I mean, the movies almost 60 years old! If anybody hasn't seen it by now, then I doubt they're going to get around to it anytime soon. Since I took the time to watch your review, I would have liked to see what you thought of the big surprise ending.
@Weiselberry
@Weiselberry 4 ай бұрын
A large part of what I do here is help introduce people to older films they've never heard of. It doesn't matter to me if a movie is five, ten, fifty, or one hundred years old. I avoid spoilers as much as I can because there's always someone watching who's never seen it, who I hope will be inspired to check it out. Sometimes I discuss an ending if I feel it's necessary, but I'm more likely to do that if the film is one a majority of my viewers are familiar with. That was not the case this time. I'm sorry if you're disgruntled, but ultimately I chose to keep mum about this great twist so that others could be as surprised and entertained by it as I was.

I love this film, one of my favorites, since it came it out the year I was born, yeah I'm that old😊, anyway I saw it the other day again, and I notice that ironically there's a scene in the movie where they actually spoil the ending, I won't tell exactly where, for obvious reasons, but I highly recommend this film👍

I don’t entirely agree with Ms. Weiselberry’s view that nudity is often inappropriate in a movie.If the movie is set at a naturist beach or resort(or if a scene involves someone taking a shower or a bath),then it’s quite appropriate to show nudity.I can see that,given the overall nature and tone of Terrore nella Spazio”,having an erotic scene between one of the women and the captain probably would have been a bad idea.Plus there are the complications related to a work-related romance.
