I mean, if Planet Zoo 2 wants to justify its own existence it absolutely needs flying birds, but it definitely shouldn't have that as its only new feature. I really want an overhaul to the exhibit system, the fact that a poison dart frog and an iguana have the same sized terrarium is absurd.

I couldn't agree with this video more! Adding smaller "mini-games" to a sequel could really up the replay value for people above and beyond the building. The social media/photography angle is a really fun one. A few other things that could help keep things interesting: (1) Animal personalities! Give random animals certain quirks (preference for specific enrichment items, foods, plants or parts of an exhibit, interactions with other species or animals). For example, say you have a gibbon that really likes the xylophone? Taking a photo of them using it multiple times could increase the odds of getting a viral social media hit. This would help the animals feel more dynamic across builds ANND could add to the "gamification" elements. (2) Ambassador animals and training sessions! Think of it as a slightly more "interactive" zookeeper mode / mini-game where you train certain behaviors to get the animal ready for educational presentations, harness-training, etc. (3) Annual events! This one isn't adding a mini-game at all but would be really fun... Imagine being able to have "seasonal" scenery items that appear only during certain months of the year complete with triggered events, lighting, etc. This would be perfect for all sorts of things but the obvious example would be a "zoo lights" type function. Not a new game but something that would add another fun layer to things and encourage you to re-visit older builds. (4) Achievements/rewards! New items/pieces or variations for existing items get unlocked when you achieve certain things (similar to statues but for specific tasks across ALL of your zooss). For example, if there's a photo mode that gets added? Taking pictures of 25 different species might get you access to a new filter for said-mode. Or training X number of ambassador animals might get you access to a new animal harness or staff uniform variant. Building a zoo with animals from each continent might get you access to a new type of zoo map format. Stuff that's relatively "easy" to do, and is fully optional, but encourages different ideas. (5) Ways to document lore in-game. Again, not really a "gamification" type thing but ways to encourage players to share the story behind their zoo within the game file itself. There's all sorts of other ideas too (custom sign and map building, custom menu items for food/drink shops, function centers) but these feel a lot more subtle than what you're talking about! Haha. :)

We need zt2's biome brush system. My biggest gripe with planet zoo is how limited the maps feel for making exhibits for animals outside the map's designated biome. every exhibit will have the same dirt, grass, rocks with no variation! Doomed to using dirt in all my exhibits because savannah grass for the brown bear exhibit is just too goofy. Zt2 had such a good system and even had a set of brushes with foliage/rocks/ or both. It seems like such a no-brainer to me but maybe that's just my childhood playing Zt2 coming out. I agree with all your ideas too, just this would be my biggest request from Frontier for a planet zoo sequel.

i can’t necessarily agree as having tropical grass appear in a taiga map isn’t too realistic for me - you don’t see that in real life. I do think having an expanded palette for brushes would be much better though so all habitats can vary but still blend together in the greater expansive of the biome like we see in pc2

Something I think would be cool is building a relationship with an animal and once you have a high enough friendship they look at you and have a chance of walking up to the glass (if you are within viewing range)

Remember in Zoo tycoon 2 you will get a message that there was a celebrity visiting the zoo and you had to take a picture of that celebrity and somehow I think if I remember correctly it will boost your popularity of the zoo. Right now we just have other players visiting your zoo but it will be nice if we had like special NPC guest. And if you could get a good picture of them standing next to an exhibit or something it will boost your popularity

Coming from someone who has worked as a zookeeper, a personal desire for the sequel would be the inclusion of dedicated backstage areas where you can shift different animals between the main exhibit, backstage stalls, and backyard holdings! Even beyond that, I think a MAJOR gameplay mechanic should be centered around updating your exhibits! Zoos don’t just build new exhibits, they’re constantly going back to older habitats and updating them for modern times and for new species when older ones pass away! If you haven’t updated the exhibits you built at the very start of your game, maybe you’d lose guest happiness points for those exhibits when compared to your newer ones? But that’s just me, though! I 100% agree with all of your points, I have a lot more fond memories playing the first JWE in college than I do with Planet Zoo purely because the side missions and constant flow of mini games kept my attention for HOURS!

i was an avid ZT2 player for years growing up and my favorite parts were always the marine training mini game and all the photo/mini challenges! There was so much to do! And I didn't really remember those aspects until this video... I love the realism of planet zoo's management system, and there's obviously ethical issues with the dolphin training idea now... but *man* you're so on the nose with this. Gimme something to do while I'm waiting on my money hole to fix itself!

There are no ethical issues with dolphin training. Just people who don't know anything about it, hopping on an animal rights-bandwagon. The same animal rights activists think ALL animal use is slavery, especially zoos. Dolphins do better in human care than many other species, they're thriving and when they're treated well (as they always are in reputable parks), then they're happy... simple as that.

every zoo animal receives training- many are trained with treats to stick their paw thru the cage for blood draws, open their mouth for inspections, roll on their back so their stomach can be viewed. animals with hooves are trained with treats to get them trimmed every few months. there are infinite amounts of training mini games they could employ without ever even touching the dolphin/orca problem

My biggest issue with them making a sequel is that instead of fixing the product everyone has already spent money on they want to make a sequel, BUT MARK MY WORDS if they make a sequel and don't give the players the aviaries and aquariums I doubt they will find a feature big enough to make people want to repurchase all the expansion packs. When a company makes a new product without considering their market base they are killing off their supporters

I only got Planet Zoo this year because I can't reinstall ZT2 again (couldn't get it to work after I reinstalled my PC), and after playing Prehistoric Kingdom, the building and decorating possibilities in ZT2, even with mods, are... ugh. So I got PZ. But what I love the absolute most with zoo games, are aquariums, and so I've got a ton of cetacean mods, and fish like whale sharks and manta rays. If there is a PZ2 coming, and it doesn't have cetaceans, I'm not getting it. ZT2 kept me happy for twenty years. (AT LEAST give us a harbour porpoise - which are always rescues or born from rescues, and finless porpoise - endangered species bred directly for preservation of the species, for modders to have a cetacean rig)

Zoo's are meant for people to visit and enjoy, but currently unless you do KZbin or show off your creation on social media, not many REAL people get to see your creations....and even if they do, a quick once through is all you really have to offer without any other immersive interactions or things to do. After Planet Coaster 2’s rather unfortunate launch, I wonder if Frontier may be walking back on their planet zoo 2 plans. Hence continuing to release animal packs. Hopefully they just keep updated this one game, not only adding all these things, but adding Planet Coaster 2 features, (Pathing, scaling, guest mode, etc.) and then obviously birds and fish. I would much rather pay extra, maybe $20,$25, for a bigger expansion pack that includes a whole new bird system and everything else that we want, rather then paying for a whole new game.

I agree. The problem with all these sandboxy games is they let you build without any real purpose. There's a goal but building doesn't affect it so the optimal way to play the game is to not build but that's not satisfying at all. Howeve in order to build something that is satisfying you have to ignore the gameplay. Like you said about birds is true about so many things people build "now this isn't at all functional" is the catchphrase of the Planet Zoo builder comunity. I'd like them to add more building cores like for te custom shops but ones that just make guests or animals interact with things that you built that don't have any inherant built in intended interaction.

First things first, the most important features that a potential Planet Zoo 2 should implement come from Zoo Tycoon 2: - A grid system made out of triangles. It could even come with an option to toggle off for players that don't want to build on a grid - Zoo Keeper mode. It's key to build a bond with your zoo. - ZT2's pathing system. It was simply perfect. - Minigames. Also key to make you feel part of your zoo, not just an outsider that build things. - Challenges. ZT2 challenges were amazing and extremely entertaining. Again, it all pointed towards making you feel part of your zoo as a long term project that has been being built since day one. - Then I'd personally get rid of keeper huts and staff rooms - Definitely more doors per habitat No matter how fantastic your graphics or AI is, if you're unable to establish a bond with your zoo and feel manager, builder, guest and keeper of it, your zoo game failed With that, then of course we can move onto the animals: it'd be amazing to have fully aquatic animals and apart from that, aviaries.

Not even 5 minutes in and you already voice everything I want to see changed in pretty much ALL games like this. JWE 1-2: make stuff and stare, Jpog: make stuff and stare, Zoo tycoon: make stuff and stare. Sure, every one of those has their perks but after a while they all become boring (exceptions being folks making documentaries or other things with em) What these games really need is more gameplay like you said, maybe play as the animal for example, something I personally always wanted to see, get the new creature and play as it, entertain your guests, or care for them in 1st person mode via brushing, training, playing (JWE & Jpog have something like this via the tranquilizer chases but eh), custom announcements to alert guests and make them go to specific areas rather than watching the swarm wander, I could go on

I think a game mode with automatic photographer missions where you have to photograph your animals playing with a toy or scratching themselves or something would be great. This would be like a mini game though, and feel organic, so it’s not 3 missions in the top left corner that always self replace but a list of a varying amount of challenges that pops up when you enter a specific game mode. Ideally it would vary too, maybe like this: Take a photo of (name), your (biggest, smallest, only male, only female or just nothing) (species) (mid-air, relaxing, asleep, swimming, playing with one of the toys that are accessible in that habitat, etc) This wouldn’t even be too hard to implement, photography systems exist in a ton of games where they aren’t the main feature and the missions are just text based on variables.

Zoo tycoon on the Xbox had a social media thing, showing updates of animals being released, born, etc. I don’t know why, but I LOVED that feature. It made my zoo feel real, like there were actual staff and actual guests that were actually seeing my zoo

Honestly, I don't think we need a 2nd version of the game. I wouldn't complain at all, I'd still get it and play for another unhealthy amount of hours, but I think we need more modding support. Mods aren't endorsed by Frontier, but imagine if they did so now after they released all these DLCs. Mod makers already show respect and disable mods that got were made into official frontier animals or make the DLCs required so they wouldn't really lose money and such, but there could be so much more to the game if they did this. I know they most likely never will do this, but hey, one can dream right?

Hey leaf! Yes you make valid points and arguments on what we are missing in Planet zoo game. But how about a guest fun pack; interactive zoo maps in guest hands and the layout of the zoo(like we had in Zootycoon 1&2), playgrounds, binoculars ect. And how about the path system that needs an update real bad! Obviously we are missing many animals, but the mini games your talking about was something that I was always doing :) I am also missing a proper challenge mode, or a problem zoo which you need to fix up challenge mode? I also think we need a good updated feeding station options, well updated and expand on enrichment items, we are missing so many signs for animals from the base game (Aardvark for example), and even the Delux game I am missing signs for the pygme hippo,Thomson gazelle and the komodo dragon! Oh leaf do not get me started :D With 4088.4 hours on the clock of gameplay, I am still not bored, but yes i am missing some vital options/items :D

I love those ideas. I’d like to see an element of the game where we can join breeding programmes and get rewards without the community challenges, as well as a new game mode where animals aren’t readily available to us. For example, a mode where we have unlocked certain tiered animals in the South America region etc. I even like the rescue element of zoo tycoon - where you’d be given an animal randomly with a story, and you’d have to make it part of your own zoo!

I totally agree, obviously we need birds and aquatics but that can't be all for a successor and adding gameplay/minigames is a must to make it more fun and interactive. If you want the buggies to have a purpose, it'd be cool to be able to transport your animals to their habitats via trailer. If you crash, the animal escapes and you can tranquilize it. I also want animals to be able to kill guests and fight each other with cool animations like in JWE2 lol.

I love how passionate you are about this. I agree, I really like the interaction with the world JWE2 has and expanding on this feature would be great. I personally want to do a lot of customization and management, like managing all the restaurants, shops, and even resorts. I want to be able to interact with the world very much, driving cars around parks being able to take care of things and take pictures for money is just such fun, it really can keep you going to back to a game. A zookeeper mode setting that throws back to the show training from ZT2; Training animals to do "tricks" for educator talks. Maybe like select species to keep it simpler, and you train them like how keepers do target training for vet exams, but they do it for talks like how the educators can currently throw food into the habitat to get the animals to them during the show. It can even fill an enrichment need. I like the ideas you presented though, and I've 100% wanted similar things my whole time playing this game!

I love what they do in the bird park walsrode for example: they show you how falcons hunt, play little sketches with parrots and they even let an Andean condor fly over the heads of the guests. I like most of the ideas you gave, but the absolute MUST feature if there was ever a PZ2 would be the Zookeeper-mode. I get extremely frustrated with even 5star personell not doing parts of their job. Another fix I need, but it's really more a fix than a feature is the game telling me what the problem-area is when something is "obstructed" or where the problem-area is if I want higher waterlevels or what part of the fence is missing/wrong for completing a habitat. It's so freaking annoying sometimes when the game says "I can't do this" but not saying what the freaking problem (zone) is. They are going to have to make PZ2 something pretty spectacular if it's going to be worth re-buying all of those damn animal packs.

Hear me out: the best options for minigames are right under our noses: the specialist staff jobs that use the staff facilities. Sure, a 'zookeeper mode' could let us pick up litter, repair fences/utilities, etc... but I'm talking about using the research center, workshop, keeper hut, and surgery as minigame hubs. Want to research campylobacter? You'll need to collect a sample from an infected animal and take it to the microscope. Want to research a species for that sweet breeding/education bonus? Photograph x number of behaviors. Too cheap to hire a vet? Well you can try your hand at diagnostics, but.... I love that we can pop in and watch our staff using these spaces, but I feel like they have so much more potential!

1. We need More in depth problems and events like Jurassic world, Eg storms that Injure animals or brake barriers along with this zoo wide pandemics that you have to help solve. 2. Again like Jurassic world having a helicopter or even a ranger car to help do tasks and help fill feeders round the zoo or sedate and move animals. 3. Having more education like zoo tycoon (2013) like the areas where lemur talks and mascots were interactive along with this events like birthday partys or school trips where large influxes of guests come in and ask you to eg set up tables and an education room for kids or even playgrounds as a smaller feature like many zoos have. 4. A feature that would go well in both Pz and PC2 would be parades, I know some zoos go on walks with hoof stock or even elephants round the zoos and setting these up would be so fun planning your route making sure they don’t pass certain predators. 5. Better management, eg having to create better backstage areas that have bug cages or shrimp tanks and even little onsite farms to help self provide for you zoo and cheapen costs. 6. Having birds mainly ground birds and fowls, making habitats more realistic having small birds on the ground that require low maintenance but get enrichment from other species and always latter include falcon shows and have the birds in a cage simmilar to bats but larger and not always walk through, this would be a start to birds. 7. As another introduction to aquariums I think a touch pool would be perfect having rays and small fish in just like exhibit animals helping to create somewhat of an aquarium experience. All in all those are my suggestions Please feel free to tweak and provide opinions

Natural disasters that damage facilities, photo opportunities, animal rescues and adoptions, special unlocks, etc, all really livened up the gameplay. I was hoping for something like this with PZ's challenge mode, but turns out it's just "franchise but offline".

- Conservation Research where you go out on a research mission to another zoo or the wild to learn more about the animals in the zoo. - Releasing animals to the wild should be more than the click of button (Involve planning on say getting the animal to its native range and choosing release sites). - Zoo Trading should allow you to trade animals for other animals at other zoos and there be an option to have this be prestige based so you would need a certain amount of points for each animal you add. - Zoo Membership programs that you can actually manage the aspects of (like setting discounted rates for shops) - Keeper experiences where appropriate so you can take your guest round on say a Penguin feeding experience. - An option to play as the animals would also be a nice addition.

Right on the money; I would become attached to my animals in Zoo Tycoon 2 , something that does not seem to happen, perhaps because we all got older, but the lack of interaction with the animals feels very on point as one, if not the main, reason why I feel detached and eventually bored with the game. Sometimes it has a resurgence but that’s again when I find an angle of interaction with certain animals! So more interactions and personality with/of animals would be much appreciated.

I want more stuff like rare traits, rare variations, rare colors, and rare mutations. Like a five legged frog or two headed turtle, or animals with more rare color or pattern variations, or maybe add traits like some animals can have a sneaky trait which will make them escape more, some animals can have an aggresive trait which will make them be more aggressive towards guests or other animals, an animal with a shy trait will actively hide from guests, an animal with a playful trait can be more interactive and have more fun and be more entertaining, etc.

Planet Zoo I feel that it fell short on the issue of missions / career mode (something that Zoo Tycoon 2 was never defeated), but what would happen if, apart from better missions... the community could generate its own scenarios and missions, something that people would have tools to share and edit and the community would vote for the best scenarios. This could be an interesting source of ongoing content. I would like a video where you think about how it could and should be implemented.

wish we had the same challenge system of zt2! i personally love the career mode as it is but it does suffer from a huge drawback being it is all voice acted so unfortunately that means it’s more expensive to have more scenarios.

I agree, I've been playing since beta testing but only come back when a DLC is released lately (not the latest one tho, I just can't find it in me anymore) and it doesn't matter how hard I try, it all just works to good for me xD I need to struggle, have some kind of challenge.. It could be storms, it could be diseases (that actually do something in game..), some kind of economic crisis that forces you to make better decisions or maybe even temporarily cut down on animals to "survive". I am always flooded with money and close down my zoo to drain it but as soon as it's open again it is right back in a minute or two, I always play on the hardest settings but there just isn't any kind of struggle. The diseases feels like a joke, I do get them in my zoo from time to time but it's always sorted right away so I don't even notice it happening except for the little notice. My biggest struggle is that sometimes the keepers don't want to feed my animals or forgets to clean the same single enclosure but that is really it 😅

I would appreciate more Szenarios in Career mode. Not the time based! Just like in Zoo Tycoon: Building a Zoo from the beginning. Having 10 Animals from Afrika or have 3 Big Cats Species, 2 Different Bear Species. Building a Zoo on small space like the City Zoo in Zoo Tycoon 1.

Agree that a zookeeper mode would be awesome but I’d be worried that they would add ridiculous mini games like zoo tycoon. I don’t want to be able to do anything a zookeeper wouldn’t do. I love how planet zoo is about conservation and the good work real zoos do. I’d hate to see it lean into the less flattering pop culture view and make it more likely people will mismanage there animals.

I think that stuff would be fun, especially the 'Keeper Mode'. Whenever I'm bored with Planet Zoo is almost always because I'm out of inspiration and there isn't much I wanna build, and that's not much the game can solve. I don't really want a Planet Zoo 2, at least not anytime soon. There'd probably be tons of animal cuts and I doubt the roster would be as good as the one in Planet Zoo until it's been out for at least a few years, and we've got DLC. The main thing I wanna see is personality. When you go to Zoos the animals don't all act the same, this is especially prominant in more intelligent animals, like mammals. But I just think adding more personality to animals would be so fun, it'd make me feel a lot more connected to my zoos, if my animals actually had a personality. I'm not even 100% sure they don't currently, but if they do, add more animations or something to make it more obvious, because it often seems like they're just the same. Despite me not agreeing with all of this, you made some great points, it still deserves an Australian National Anthem. If planet zoo 2 does come out I want it to have the only, ONLY, thing the zoo tycoon 3 does right is the guest interaction spots like feeding and washing they could just be square spots you put on the barrier and you choose what to do, that and a guest mode where you interact with the park. Also to justify it’s existence I think yeah it needs flying birds, I also want different sized exhibits, and this one is personal but a hit box model and climbing rework, so for the hit box it’ll give animals with HUGE hit boxes a lot smaller(cough*komodo dragon*cough), the model mainly for base game animals like the bison and lion, and climbing both gives climbing to animals that commonly climb but don’t in pz like the Asian water monitor, and rework the animations for some of the animals like when the lemurs are sitting they have that cartoon cat tail instead of it hanging down or the sifaka not jumping from verticals climbing point to another verticals climbing point

Totally agree on the fact that to justify a Planet Zoo 2 it needs more gameplay features. There are good ideas from your video but like you said, it's a management game and so I think the mechanics should be more on the management side. We have some basis in The first game but they really have no rewards : - Genes ? Great but even if I love getting 100% in each gene, no reward. And I can't keep them that high without having my own stock in a franchise zoo because people just don't sell animals like that. ALbinos ? Great but it is an industry on franchise at a incredible point. You want a group of giraffes ? Well... With good genes you end with only albinos yaaay... If you play with the share mechanic enabled by Franchise you end up with a white animals zoo. - Reintroducing animals ? Why would I ? They sell for way much credits in trading post. It's ending like a garbage. Animals with no good genes or just not selling end in the wild and again, no real reward. Ideas : We could have some thresholds for genes. Some levels where when you had like 10 births with Longevity at 80% you can't get under unless inbreeding. Or even link it with releasing to the wild. 10 animal released with 80% longevity get you a lock or just access in animal shop for 80% minimum longevity from Frontier Zoo so you acutally keep your progress without making trading useless. I also liked the way you unlocked some species in Zoo Tycoon from research for rare species and by the rank of your zoo for not endangered species. We could have something similar in Planet Zoo. Financing reintroduction or protection programs with zoo money to get credits or... enable unlocks of certains endangered species could be a point as actual zoo do that. Overall we need waaaaay more rewards for taking care of animals, releasing them, getting genes higher. Your idea of an online trend on animals and zoo popularity could get linked to the number of rare species, or if you have a great group of baboons for example. Things that make YOUR zoo more popular. Mechanics in Planet Zoo need to get more complicated so you have progress/reward and give you some goals other than doing beautiful things one after another.

I think planet zoo needs a BIG update not just dlc's Something like a big free update with new animals,parts (and maybeee multiplayer) etc. I really like to buy new dlc's but we need something big and for free or people will just get bored with "you want something new? You need to pay us money" I know, I know mods exist but some people just don't want to install them (like me) Also like you said with the photo mode, there could be something like in-game social media(like Instagram or facebook) to post updates on animals and pictures, get likes and followers etc; and maybe this would get more guests at the zoo. this is my perspective for the planet zoo future : )

I do really miss zoo keeper mode. I would love that. And even janitor mode. I'll do garbage cans and sweep if I need the cash and my janitors are in a den of slack. I love the photo idea, like in JWE. Let us publish those to our friends online or something. Have our animals go viral and generate zoo income. And I wish we could have the carousel or small zoo rides back, like the chair lift. When I'm just waiting for money I am checking research or making sure everyone is happy or following a random creature around but yeah. Zoo keeper mode. Number one wishlist item.

Ok. Hear me out. I like ur idea. I have some ideas for u. U start by making doors for the animal background and front area functional. When its bad weather i call the animals back in. Usualy i place a new docoration for a few min inside. Every halfn gameyear i grab a random animal from the market. Can be in good or bad shape. I usualy dice for it. Than i add it or build a new habitat. Sometimes i needed to build a second habitat for the same species or i was changing the lions in a new habitat and placed the leopard into the (befor) lion one. I aswell change whole areas when i need to.... i love building. I often put almost everything in sandbox off so i can build without problems of death...escapes, poop, sickness, aging... than when im halfway happy i just put it on again. If we want minigames we should make them on/off like we wish. Thats my point. For me this game is great. I do not even need mouses,birds or fishes. If i feel alike there is a whole comunity creating animals for us. I love it.

My bald eagle post on Reddit was timed well for this video lol. I do think we need birds but just a better variety of non flying birds does the job, it's shocking we are this far into the game and still don't have like a grey crowned crane for Africa. I do like the idea of more gameplay features but I fear they would take too much time off developing the more animals we all keep asking and they probably would get tedious after a while like in the jwe games. They are still fun ideas though that could improve the desire for a sequel.

As someone with thousands of hours in Minecraft, it's on the gamer to make the game fun for themselves. If you get to the point where you ask yourself "now what?" and can't answer yourself, those games aren't for you. If you need all that extra stuff to continue playing a game, there are loads of other games out there with similar features and other bells and whistles. I'd love new animals and some tweaks of existing mechanics like the pathing and barrier placement, but adding all that other junk would muddle the purpose of the game, which is designing and operating a zoo. Hard pass to adding mini-games to Planet Zoo.

@@LeafProductions Well....sort of. They don't take away from those games because they aren't the same game as Planet Zoo. I'd argue all the games you mentioned are geared more towards a younger audience, whereas Planet Zoo, as complicated as it is, is geared towards an older audience. I don't think they're comparable despite having the same general type of content. Planet Zoo, in my opinion, is meant to be exactly what it is with the constant management and extreme control over detail in your building and creativity, and adding things like mini-games would change the whole feel of the game. I think it's mainly the mini-games I'm against. They don't feel like Planet Zoo. The zookeeper mode could be interesting.
