FLORENCE
Planet Earth Motorcycle Expedition: Uncovering the Treasures of Florence
In the latest episode of the Planet Earth Motorbike Expedition, we explore the enchanting walled city of Lucca. Today, we embark on a new adventure through the capital of Tuscany, Florence, the "city of lilies", aboard our faithful companion, the Black Panther, a 2017 Harley Davidson Street Glide CVO.
Our Florentine journey began at the Basilica of Santa Cruz, a true open-air museum. Among the various artistic treasures that adorn the interior of the basilica, we highlight:
* Donatello's Crucifix: A masterpiece of the Renaissance, considered one of the most important sculptures of the period.
* Michelangelo's Tomb: The renowned artist's eternal resting place, the tomb is adorned by allegorical sculptures representing painting, sculpture and architecture.
* Machiavelli's Tomb: The political philosopher and author of "The Prince" also rests in the Basilica of Santa Cruz, in a monumental tomb designed by Giorgio Vasari.
Leaving the Basilica behind, we head to Piazza della Signoria, the political and social heart of Florence. In the square, we find several sculptures and works of art, such as:
* Michelangelo's David: A bronze replica of the famous original statue, which is currently in the Galleria dell'Accademia.
* The Fountain of Neptune: A monumental work from the 16th century, adorned by sculptures of maritime deities.
* The Palazzo Vecchio: The former seat of Florence's government, currently a museum housing frescoes, tapestries and other artistic treasures.
We entered Palazzo Vecchio and were amazed by the grandeur of its architecture and the richness of its details. We explored the halls, admiring the frescoes by Vasari and Bronzino, and climbed the clock tower for a panoramic view of the city.
Our eyes turned to Piazza del Duomo, where the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore dominates the landscape. Brunelleschi's octagonal dome, a landmark of Renaissance architecture, took our breath away. We entered the cathedral and marveled at its stained glass windows, mosaics and sculptures, such as Michelangelo's Pietà.
We followed our steps along the banks of the River Arno, appreciating the beauty of the city reflected in its waters. We observed the historic bridges, such as the Ponte Vecchio, adorned with jewelry stores, and the Ponte Santa Trinita, with its sculptures of angels.
We went up to Piazza Michelangelo, a natural viewpoint that offers an aerial view of all of Florence. The city spread out before us like a carpet of history and beauty, with its red roofs, bell towers and the River Arno winding through the streets.
To end our day in style, we visited the Galileo Museum, dedicated to the life and work of the renowned scientist. We admire the original scientific instruments, interactive experiments, and discoveries that have revolutionized our understanding of the universe.
Florence gave us a deep immersion in Italian art, history and culture. With every step, we felt transported to the Renaissance, surrounded by masterpieces and monuments that marked Western civilization.
