Plant science for Jon: 21:45 Plants do indeed consume oxygen, but only at night. During the day, plants consume carbon dioxide, water and sunlight to generate sugars and oxygen as a byproduct. Without sunlight, plants survive by breathing oxygen from the air instead. For this reason hospitals are supposed to remove plants and flowers from a patient's room during the night.

@jessie6999 жыл бұрын
Many A True Nerd Well, it's hard to say. The production of course varies on many other factors, for example do we assume a constant production rate and then an instantaneous switch? Do we have a sliding scale based on light intensity, does it take some time between the time that the sun sets before the switch occurs, does moonlight and other reflected light sources factor? What I do know for certain is that plants still operate on a cycle similar to animals, in that they use less energy and enter a resting state during the evening. If we take ourselves for example, we breath less, consume less energy and use less resources in general at night and when we're asleep. We can assume plants do the same. Then we take in that plans greatly outnumber humans and the level of oxygen in the air is fairly constant, and then the amount of animals on earth. Somehow, plants have to produce more than what is consumed from day to night. So, ultimately we can also say that the oxygen we consume normally is also much less than what is produced, and plants themselves produce more than they can consume, just by using this logic. In all actuality, with your base, even with plants and assuming that the entire system is sealed, you shouldn't consume oxygen as fast as the game shows because of the size of the space. On top of that, note that space ships recycle oxygen instead of generating it. The most likely scenario in real life would be to have a means of producing or separating oxygen from the atmosphere, and then using small subsystems rather than one large main system, in order to recycle oxygen back from the carbon dioxide produced by humans.
@nasserspaceprogram43299 жыл бұрын
From what I've garnered from a Biology A level plants produce more oxygen during the day than the cosume at night in 12 hours, though they do create an equilibrium between what they use and produce at dawn and dusk so there is no net gain or loss at those times.

Humans can breathe pure oxygen, but it needs to be at 22% air pressure, which is useful because space suits won't have to hold back one whole atmosphere of pressure. You should read "Artemis" by Andy Weir, who also wrote the Martian. Remember, space doesn't care about accidents, it just kills you anyway.

Day 3: Still no contact from the Alpha base. The lights are going out everywhere. Mike and I just stared at the big circulating fan in the exercise room as it slowly crawled to a stop. "I'm afraid," I said to him, "I don't want to die." "Don't worry," Mike replied in his usual casual tone, "worst case, Cardiox poisoning softens the blow by giving you hallucinations before you actually go to zero oxygen." "You're really not helping, Mike." He laughs. "Laugh or cry, baby: laugh or cry." (love your videos, Jon - looks like I was wrong about the clock on Luck 10 on the F4 perk chart after all.)

Regarding energy storage: you can actually store electricity using water. Actually it's one of the best means to store lots of energy. Google pumped-storage hydroelectricity! The basic idea is simple: you pump the water high to store the energy. When you want it back, you just let the gravity to push the water through some turbines and get electricity back.
@ManyATrueNerd9 жыл бұрын
+mrh3h Surely you waste a lot of energy though - pumping the water up then turbines back down - neither can be perfect energy exchanges...
@PK13129 жыл бұрын
+Many A True Nerd All methods of storage waste some energy, but pumping is actually one of the most efficient means we have. I think it's something like 80% efficient.
@mrh3h9 жыл бұрын
Quick look at Google Scholar revealed that the efficiency of PHS is 65-80% which is pretty respectable and comparable to other large scale energy storage technologies. 20% may be "a lot of energy" but to do better is really hard - and you wouldn't have the resources to do better on mars anyway!
@Thumper85449 жыл бұрын
+Many A True Nerd so I live near one of these in the UK, and the base idea is that we produce a flat rate of power, obviously during the day, we require more power and at night we require less. the situation they always lay out is that during the break of Corronation street, everyone goes off and turns on their kettles, causing a surge in power requirement(possibly more than can be produced), in this instance, they release the water down the mountain, that produces power and that compensates for the spike in power usage. however at night, when everyone is asleep, we still produce the same amount of power (and turning the power plants off then on again can be slow, costly, etc) so we use the excess power to pump the water back up

One way of storing electrical energy in a physical medium is to use spare power capacity to pump water into a high tank such as a water column, then when more power is needed the water is released to push a turbine and generate more capacity. Its not very efficient, but it could explain the visual effect you are seeing in a "realistic" way.

About the tree thing... All living things need to breath in or order to function (the only exemption being some microbial) through a processes known as cellular respiration. Plant's however, produce Oxygen as a bi-product during photosynthesis; but this can only happen during the day so at night, while no photosynthesis occurs plants appear to suddenly start breathing when in fact they've been breathing all along (overall plant still produce more Oxygen then they consume).

plants like trees do photosynthesis during day turning CO2 and H2O into C6H12O6 and O2, however this process only works with sunlight, so during night the plant does Cellular respiration which consumes O2. That's why the trees produce O2 during daytime and consume O2 during nighttime. : )

As trees are unable to use sunlight to produce ATP from ADP at night, since photosynthesis cannot take place, they 'consume' oxygen at night to allow cellular respiration to occur, which means the cells in the tree are able to produce the energy (ATP) required for cellular functions by 'burning' sugars stored in the tree. So no, plants don't just all of a sudden become animals when no one is looking. :P

i just spent 5 hours playing this. i have a rather large colony with 50 residents, large med bays, a very healthy stock pile of food, and plenty of electricity, water, etc. but getting metal is hard. stock pile spare parts like crazy...i lost colonies so fast to that... i also have frequenty oaying visitors. the med bays and dozen medics pays off. you get huge ships full of wounded soilders that pay out bug bucks to heal them. this game is AWESOME. my gf thinks im crazy now haha. maybe. its 4am now and i sat in front of my pc listening to the same music for 5 hours. she walked in every so often and was like wtf, your base is huge now. tip, when starting out, go for the biggest solar panel, electric storage, wind turbine, and water collector. you have enough resources to do that. it helps big time early on.
@SanitysRevenge9 жыл бұрын
Regarding the trees consuming oxygen at night, they actually do as they cannot photosynthesise during the night as there is no sunlight, so they use respiration to produce energy just like animals during the nighttime so that they don't die

The base design is definitely not very distance-efficient for the people living there. The longer people spend commuting between work, beds and canteens, the less work gets done. You really should try to make a lattice, wheel, or snowflake design with beds and food areas at the centre to reduce walking distance.
@m4xwellmurd3r9 жыл бұрын
its actually really hard to do this design in this game. structures are very limited in where they can be placed and how many can connect to each module. i wish they had just an empty room that could have multiple link ups to the room to make it easier to do this.
@shadowfragment9 жыл бұрын
m4xwellmurd3r Or the ability to free-draw connections. It'd be cool to have curved tunnels. But I maintain that he could have done slightly better than to have the food on the far left of the base. If he'd found enough space there, he'd have put the beds there too.

Just to make sure you know, trees and other plants need to respire too, during the day they are able to use the energy from the sun to turn water and carbon dioxide into a glucose molecule and oxygen but at night they use the glucose they produced and oxygen, a little bit less than produced, to keep them ticking over as it where.

Plants consume oxigen if there is no light, because no light no photosynthesis and the plant still needs energy so they start "breething" oxigen. Well to be precise they are allways consuming oxigen, but the co2 consumption outperforms the o2 consumption, with some plants at least.
