It was one hell of a ride and a big night for all. But as Barcelona woke up after the most intense night of celebration, the questions were already being asked as to what happens next.

@@fabiocampagnoli You sound like a bitter man. It's so funny how when you don't have a dog in the game, it's quite clear that the commentators were actually very good at not being biased. But every day a ton of fans (especially from the land of LR) would shit on them. I actually don't find her that amazing. E.g. it is surprising how she only has one way of saying "painting the picture". And often she would totally zone out. But as hard as I would try, I can't say that her being a Brit shone through to any "obnoxious" degree. I saw the same on Mozzie's videos, so many (Italians) would say that all he only favored the Brits. And totally disregard how critical he was off them early on and how he called out the teams mistakes. I actually think he was tougher on them than he was on LR and Magic. But again, I don't have favorites so I don't see it through the same colored glasses you are wearing. What I don't like about the official commentators is how much they are part of the gang. Not a single controversial thing out of any of them. They just want to be friends with everybody which is not the job of a reporter. And the older dude was just plain horrible, he would cut the boat interviews short time and time again or even worse, ask people to smile. WTF? It's not his job to tell people how to feel.

Hi Matt, I was fortunate enough to come to Barcelona/Villanova for the first preliminary AC regatta in 2023, and again for this regatta in Barca. Even though I'm a Kiwi, I would love to see AC38 come back here again. This is a fabulous city and venue, with everything one could want by way of holiday/regatta facilities and attractions. The local people are welcoming and friendly. My time(s) here have been delightful, and I would recommend everyone at least come and visit this lovely part of the world. Look forward to your excellent coverge of this and all other major yachting events, Cheers Alan Yardley

The Kiwis told everyone they were going to win prior to the challenger semis. They already knew they were enough faster that they were not going to lose. I’m not excited for more AC75 cups unless they change the course somehow. The vast majority of races were essentially over at the end of the first leg. I would rather see a wider longer course with fewer legs that might allow the ability to come from behind that just barely existed in Barcelona.

@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella Күн бұрын
They seem unlikely to have told anyone that, but they *certainly* did not "tell everyone" as you claim. Why? Because they didn't have any way of knowing. The GB boat was actually faster on paper (in terms of straight line top speed, expressed as Vmg max) and it was not possible for NZ to know whether GB would make the relatively small improvement to their acceleration, and their speed out of tacks, that it would have taken to win consistently. It was evident by the time we were two races into the Am Cup proper that, in any races where NZ did not have a lead of at least 5 seconds after rounding the first turning mark, they would almost certainly lose that race (GB were appreciably faster downwind, if they had clear air). And in the fifth race, GB had a lead of six seconds at that point, and THEY won that race. The reason the races were generally over after the first leg was that the kiwis needed to nail it home before then. So I concede it was not great viewing for those unfamiliar with the nuances, but your opening proposition is an invention.

Only 5 races won by GB as a challenger, Australia & NZ have won more than 5 to win the cup off America. I was surprised that after 137 years GB had only won 5. Shows how extraordinary it was for Australia to be the first country to beat the Americans.

@@Windfix Yep, even as a Kiwi, you have to say that Oz winning the thing back in '83 gave the Cup a new lease of life. Shame we haven't seen so much Aussie involvement recently. Plenty of decent sailors. Some of them crewing for other countries. Including NZ!
@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella Күн бұрын
@@Windfix Good correction, but it's *nine races won in AmCup by Brit challengers* (including the two this time). Furthermore, it's not the first time a Brit challenger has won two races in one AmCup. It happened in 1934, with Sopwith's "Endeavour" (which was the second-to-last time the Cup was contested before the long gap between 1937 and 1958, when Britain challenged again), and they were also back-to-back wins, like this time. NZ has now won 41 Am Cup races, 21 with Peter Burling helming. Of the 41, *22 were won by NZ as challenger* (including 7 with Burling helming) and 19 as defender (including 14 with Burling helming; Nathan Outteridge shared the helming for 7 of those 14)
@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella Күн бұрын
@@davejones7632 Not only that; (Oz winning the thing back in '83 did indeed give the Cup a new lease of life) - but also it made a viable challenge almost achievable for lil ol NZ, and in fact we didn't disgrace ourselves in '87 (although we did a year later : Fay's dick move met with a smarter dick move from Dennis). Just as importantly, our most impressive efforts in the last decade and a bit would not have succeeded without two Aussie giants, who would never have been available or affordable if Oz had mounted decent challenges. Nathan and particularly Glenn made a huge difference and fitted the team almost better than if they'd been entirely home grown. In the interview with Kevin Shoebridge he talks of just how much Team NZ had on their plate this time round, and yet when Glenn Ashby (who was not even going to participate with the team in '24) floated a pet project he'd wanted to tackle since childhood (the World Land Sailing Speed Record, pretty peripheral to the Cup) the team said "Hell, yeah !" And he was right to suggest it: they nailed it first time, then he went out again and broke his own record. And I'm willing to bet that re-invigorated the team (and kept the creative minds thinking outside the box) during the long period of buildup to the two week flash-in-the-pan of the America's Cup we just watched. I privately correct, every time I hear someone talking about "the NZ Cup", to "the ANZAC Cup". I'm pretty sure we would not have won three back to back if the Aussies had got seriously involved after the DoG fiasco in 2010 and kept coming back. (When they won it in '83, it was their SEVENTH challenge!) Heck, we might not have got a sniff!

One of the oddest things is that as you look at the boat and the jerseys there is no indication that it is New Zealand who won. I suppose it is on the sail somewhere, but I find it odd that Emirates and Toyota take a bigger place than the country itself.

Best overall Cup event coverage, hands down. Mozzy Sails is the technical guru channel in a close 2nd.

I think the Brits will lift it next time. In AC36 the kiwis had a version 2.0 boat but no match racing, while the challengers were all on version 1.0 boats. This time the challengers had version 2.5 boats, kiwis had some more match experience (and a land speed record for some slightly different sails). I think the partnership with Mercedes and the rate of genuine improvement Ineos have made is going to be hard to beat in AC38.

Another great interview with the challenger of record it will be interesting how the negotiations go for the next event. As a kiwi immensely proud of our team's win i do hope the negotiations bring about the potential for more matches to be more contestable after crossing the start line as in this event throughout the whole series it did appear as a non sailor there were limited opportunties for the trailing boat after the gun.
