Your goal as a Light Assault is not to be where enemies don't expect you. There are plenty of vets running around that know all the hiding places already. Your goal is simply to NOT be where your enemies expect you to be. If they start expecting you to be somewhere because they Q-spotted you or just start throwing bullets your way, it's time to move.

Also be aware of how NOT to play the Light Assault class: - The Light Assault is at a disadvantage in the open field. Without high areas to reach and attack from, the Light Assault loses its primary advantage over other classes; it doesn't have the ability to restore health or shields like the Medic, drop ammunition or turrets like the Engineer, stealth or snipe like the Infiltrator, use overshields or rockets like the Heavy Assault, or soak up and dish out high damage like the MAX. Be aware of the areas you're likely to be fighting in; it may be best to leave the jetpack in the locker. - Be careful about positioning when taking the high ground. Skylining- the act of showing yourself to someone with the sky visible behind you- draws attention quickly, even at night; standing at the edge of a roof and pouring fire down on enemies is going to attract unwelcome projectiles very quickly. Only show yourself as much, and as long, as you need to engage and eliminate a target, and don't be ashamed to withdraw the moment you see incoming fire. - Don't automatically go for the skies when under fire. The standard jump jets are slow to lift off, and being airborne leaves you unable to aim down sights, so rounding a corner with an enemy on your heels and trying to make it to a rooftop is likely to just get you shot in the rear. Now, my advice for playing the Light Assault: - Learn to love the suppressor. It's not perfect for every weapon or situation, certainly- but the LA has an unparalleled ability to flank and attack from unexpected angles and elevations, and being nearly inaudible to the enemy and invisible to their minimaps is a HUGE advantage. Pairing this with smoke grenades and the night-vision scope can let you down entire enemy squads without them even knowing where you are. - Never take the same route twice. The Light Assault, over every other class, can pick and choose nearly any possible attack angle. Use all the tools at your disposal to hit and run, relying on smart use of your mobility to stay out of direct confrontations when you can. I once whittled down an enemy MAX 1v1 with nothing but a carbine just by playing hide-and-seek through a building, never letting him bring his much more powerful weapons to bear on me. Have fun, shoot straight, and C4 that tank already before it blows my face off. I mean jeez, come on.

At first, I was thinking of switching to a Light Assault, as I feel more comfortable at close~medium-close range. 'cause one example is that (something that happened recently) at one time, when at a random facility, lead (at least figuratively) was flying from both sides, There was also a LA trying to snipe/take potshots from a rooftop. Now, I was a Combat Medic back then, I'd try to shoot the LA, but again, I'm not that good with long range shots. (mainly 'cause of Bullet drop AND the fact that these weapons aren't hitscan.) It wasn't working out. That made me consider trying the LA again. Basically, while the others are busy, I could use the Jetpack to take a more "unorthodox detour" and get into my more preferred range. But not long after, I realized that, as you wrote in your first tip, when in the open, it'll be harder to find any detours... or safe ways to move into flanking position. So, Infiltrator was one option, but were unsure if they're even viable for close range (with SMGs of course)

The Light Assault can also make for a great medium range assassin when equipped with the Hunter QCX. You can get places no other sniper could, hide in the shadows while an enemy force advances, and then pick off targets without giving away your position. Many players also choose these over engineers to pilot ESFs. You lose out on the chance to repair a critically damaged aircraft, but it gives you the chance to keep fighting if you know your ESF is about to go down. Drop down on a fight and rain some unexpected hell down on your enemies, or sneak up on the sky guard that had the jump on your ESF, and send it to an early c4-dug grave.

Technically, there are 2 other AV options for the LA- grenade launchers and explosive crossbows. They won't be doing the main part of your damage, but I use them when specifically targeting vehicles just to get that last hit in case my C4 doesn't do the job.

IMO you do more for your team/squad/platoon when using the supportive grenades such as flashes or smoke. They're so hardly used I don't really understand why as they can really help out with the map. Smoke becomes especially useful when paired with a soft-point, IR scope suppressed SMG.
