This is why top tradespeople should be paid the correct amount of money for professional work. There is probably a variety of reasons why this job is installed wrong-cost,inexperience,time frame etc and the result is a disaster.

Sal, if you have not already, it would be interesting to put together a video on how to identify improper tile installations. For example how to identify if spot bonding was used, signs of improper and or failing grouting, lippage, etc. thinking of nondestructive inspection techniques that prospective home buyers can use.

I love to hate these kind of videos. I let a contractor go when I saw that this was being done in my bathroom. Spot bonding the wall tiles in my shower (12x24). Tile cuts from Hell etc ... Sort of past the point of return. Do I rip it all out and start over. Lost a lot of sleep over this one. Miraculously my neighbor ran into a complete stranger - he did tile - came up in the conversation. He finished the shower - we’ll just keep an eye on it for issues. However, this stranger did my floor and it is magnificent. The shower is on the watch list. But I remain hopeful. Wow that is a lot of tile. Good luck to Greg and the home owners.

Someone told me his uncle used to 5 spot floors all the time. In residentials he'd always say "It's because you bought cheap tile" but then they'd say "But you sold me the tile!" He told me even saw his uncle using an ice cream scoop for the spots. Finally his madness was stopped when he 5 spotted a commercial floor and the whole floor instantly failed when they drove a forklift across it. They ended up settling with him demo'ing the floor for free and not getting paid, then he moved to Florida immediately after, to presumably continue the hack madness unabated by laws and rules or common sense.

No sarcasm here....why WOULD someone do this? It seems like such a bad idea and I'm not a tile installer. I'm an Electrical Engineer. I've seen a few like this when doing research on how to tile my bathroom and I haven't run across anyone explaining WHY someone would tile like this. Is this correct in some other kind of installation. Doesn't seem like it would be.
@SalDiBlasi5 жыл бұрын
Good question, why would someone do this? No matter the reason, it is much more common than you might think. The main reason is probably ignorance.

That guy should not be tiling. Could have at least half in square notched the floor n the tile. U can also use the trowel n done correctly u can make over an inch sized trowel lines. Even tho not recommended. Keep checking your thinset

The only time to use spot bonding is when you're using plaster and pinning stone slabs on a vertical structure.. this jack of all trades master of none has no clue..that' s what the homeowner gets for not doing research and most likely went with the cheapest joker. I did a plank job 6x24 back in February with tile purchased from Florida tile with there recommend thinset.. no engobe ,cline or wax on back of tile..back buttered every tile.. builder put the bar in the wrong location..two weeks later had to remove 20 or so tile.. everyone I popped up delaminated completely from the tile and left all thinset on the floor with the imprint from the bottom of the tile. Porcelain tile is tough to get a solid bond to compared to a ceramic or natural stone.

Back butter back butter!!!!!the only thing someone should spot bond is a mirror to a wall
@willhere88925 жыл бұрын
You don't have to back butter the tile. Buck buttering is dummy proof and that's why tcna recommends it. If you mix your thinset to a sticky wetter consistency, use the right sized trowel and spread for one tile or two at a time using directional troweling, push the tiles down using your hands and the weight of your body, then your tiles will bond real good....You will need a big jack hammer to remove the tiles!!! You can't use a dry thinset consistency, overspread it and expect it to bond. The drier your thinset is and the longer it gets exposed to the air, the less sticky it will be and the thinkset won't bond to the tile. You just need to know what you're doing...
@tilesetter9295 жыл бұрын
I back butter all my tile period unless your ass is just lazy the water observation rate for tile is more higher than you think! The only time I dont back butter is when properly troweling straight additive made thinset the thinset we use the most is water additive to make the mix and tile sucks the moisture out of it! I make dam sure my floors & walls last... what a extra second to run your flat side of trowel a Across the button backed tile to insure 90% coverage ?
@willhere88925 жыл бұрын
@@tilesetter929 I've torn out tiles that weren't back buttered and they came out in little pieces using a jack hammer. If it's installed right, you can get a 90% coverage with no back buttering. Nobody back buttered tiles in the past. Back buttering is a new thing and it's dumny proof which solves the problem of improper bond caused by installers who don't know what they're doing. Back buttering a large floor will cost you.....Instead of laying 400 sq ft in a day, you'll be laying only 250 sq ft. That means you have to charge more for back buttering a large floor. Back buttering a small shower doesn't make much difference in speed though.....I always back butter my showers.
@tilesetter9295 жыл бұрын
Will Here I’ve been laying tile for 30years now we don’t use straight additive on the thinset anymore and you can mix the water based thinset loose and yes it tacks On the back but still the tile we use now mostly is button backed and porcelains water absorptionrate is much higher so straight additive latex in the thinset like in the late 80’s and 90’s I could run 800 ft in a day back buttering your tile is caring and giving the customer a product you know absolute without a doubt IS STUCK to the substrate! Your comment and about dummy proof because someone isn’t a hack, sounded pretty stupid. I just tore out a master bath that’s 10 years old nothing but thinset on the durrock and nothing on the back of the tiles I skim coated over the floor and used it after screwing it down. They thought just like you oh it’s stuck good! MY ASS! your ass wouldn’t do any jobs for me!
@willhere88925 жыл бұрын
@@tilesetter929 If you've been laying tile for 30 years that means you're a loser. Use a sticky loose thinset consistency with a 1/2 trowel and your tiles will bond good.....Why wouldn't it? Are you using horse shit for thinset? Lol Use a dry thinset consistency and your tiles won't bond very good unless you backbutter it "Dummy proof". I would never want to lay tile for you.....I own my own company and have employees working under me you stupid ass.

not the way to remove tile, good thing there was no thin set under them.
@unique2llc1345 жыл бұрын
I knew those tiles were hollow with large gaps, I tapped on them first with my metal utility knife. Its been my experience that a flat bar ( never a crowbar ) is not always ideal when removing just a couple of tiles so I use a small sacrificial chisel or cold chisel. Basically the entire floor is floating with no adhesion to the concrete substrate. The homeowner explained vehemently that they only wanted to replace those few broken ones around the drain not the rest of it at this time. She is fully aware the whole floor will eventually fail and need to be replaced now.
