I have to believe that Leo in the shop, by himself on a Sunday morning, is a man having some quiet time in his shed doing the things that he wants to do, without the day to day interpretations. I love those sort of days.

5 thousand views in 15 minutes. For me, this boat is a part of my life that I hold in a quiet place in my heart, having followed since near the beginning. I have seen the incredible craftsmanship that has been put into her restoration, it is heartening to see that there are others out there who feel the same way. Leo, I cannot imagine how you must feel when you stop and take some time to think about the community you have created. I wonder, when you edited this footage and the clips of the sunset/sunrise with the big door open to the world, if you knew how deeply those few seconds could communicate the sense of the simply joy that comes from building something that so many of us crave. Well done, and happy new year to all who follow this project.

Its about far more than the boat for me now. Tally Ho's story is a rebellion against everything cheap, easy, and instant. These videos surface in a sea of clickbait and negativity to remind me that true craftmanship lives to fight another day.

That comment about what a rare sight it is to see Leo doing some woodworking and his reply that he's having possibly the best day of the year, reveals just how much Leo has to do that we don't see - or even hear about. The reality of running such a complex project, especially when you're doing it away from home and family, and having to deal with things like visas, is a far cry from what we see in the videos. When Leo started this rebuild he can't have realised just how big a project it would become, and just how much of his life it would eat up. He comes across as a guy having the time of his life, but there must be times when it feels like a conveyor he can't get off. Perhaps, especially at this time of year, we should spare a thought for the sacrifices Leo has made to do this wonderful thing. One day - maybe even less than two years away! - he'll be sailing Tally Ho across the ocean, and will at last be able to look back on all this and see the magnificence and beauty of what he has created, and know that it was all worthwhile. Thank You, Leo, and all your crew and supporters, for this incredible project and for letting us be part of it. Happy New Year, and may 2023 be a much better year than 2022, and the time when all this effort and work finally comes together and we see Tally Ho in her full glory.

lt just struck me that for the Port Townsend community of shipwrights and boat tradespeople, seeing Leo or passing him by everyday is an ordinary sight; but for thousands like me who look forward to every video - Tally Ho's rebirth under Leo has become not only the eye opening series on wooden boat building but Leo's (Sampson Boat Co) YT videos became the gold standard of how VLOGGING must be: informative, interesting and amazing all at the same time. I am here in the Philippines enjoying my first Tally Ho video of 2023 and my first delicious coffee of the New Year.

Woodworkers like Leo and the crew know what tools were around back in 1910 - because they're still using them! Chisels, hand planes, hand drills, hand saws, and they even use a historic "ship saw" which they restored which is older than the original Tally Ho. Early electric tools & drills date back to 1895. The channel "Stumpy Nubs" has some videos about historic tools & hand planes. Interesting stuff!

I have been watching this channel and 'Acorn to Arabella' since shortly after finding them on KZbin. I have and do own boats, powerboats, and understand what is necessary for their upkeep. I am particularly in the differences between the methods of construction between both boats. On the one-hand, Leo is a knowledgeable and experienced Shipwright. On the other hand, Steven is not a Shipwright but he is knowledgeable and experienced in woodworking. Both are using talented help in the construction of their boats and it shows. There is a noticeable difference in the level of construction, insofar as, how far along each boat is. I am very impressed with both builders and the achievements they have attained. I look forward to the continued construction of each vessel in the new year. I will be disappointed not to see any more construction videos when each is finished but I will continue to watch them as they put the boats through their paces and future travels. Safe trip home to England, Leo, and a very Happy New Year to you and your crew!

I'm here to tell you that there is no such thing as THE British accent. There are hundreds of different accents here, which can tell the tuned ear exactly where you were brought up, and something about your social class and education. If I bump into an Englishman in the middle of the Sahara, I reckon I'd be able to locate their home geographically within a minute or two, just from listening to him/ her talk.
@JustinBellingerTV
@JustinBellingerTV Жыл бұрын
@@MikeAG333 The MEDIA British Accent (RP as it would have been in the 1940s and 50s and even 60s seems to be the biggest influence here, probably due to acting schools, and then the ease with which you can copy it, vs, say, Scouse or Brummie). THAT is also an accent - even if no one in the UK actually speaks like it any more, outside of films from that era. I'm also here to tell you, most Brits can't place MY British accent, because I've been abroad for decades, so it has changed it. ;-)
@MikeAG333
@MikeAG333 Жыл бұрын
@@JustinBellingerTV I'm not clear what you were referring to with "THAT" (is also an accent). If it is Brummie, then it's spoken by millions. And interestingly, Black Country, just up the road, has 6 or 8 distinct accents which can place you within a mile or two. RP has changed enormously over the years, which is also interesting. No-one around here speaks in anything other than RP and subtle variations.

Channels. Chainwales. Cha’n(wa)l’s. A wale is a strake wider (thicker) than the rest. The chain wales are the wales which carry the chains for the shrouds. As Bob implied, they increase the angle between the mast and the standing rigging. But cha’n’l’s don’t usually run from stem to stern.

Hello Leo, I have been watching you on this project for the past four years and I finally have something I’d like to say. Before I get to the point I would like to say that words like “awesome” “phenomenal” “rock star” and the like are truly losing their meaning the way that they are bantered about. They have become almost cliche. With that in mind I want you to know that I am choosing my words carefully and deliberately when I say that I am most impressed with not only your workmanship, perseverance, organizational skills, leadership , patience, humility etc., but the quality of work and the results exhibited in this vessel you have built are nothing less than magnificent. So happy to get an update on Tally Ho during the holidays. This episode felt like a throwback to some of the earlier ones with Leo doing so much working all by himself. Great stuff as always! Can’t wait to sign up for a cruise with the family once she’s finished and seaworthy again. Lot’s of love and happy new year from Sweden 🇸🇪 ❤

I never get tired of seeing that giant circular saw in action. 😄 Good to see a new hand on board - looking forward to learning from Bob! Excellent work as usual.

My God . Tally - Ho is a gorgeous vessel Leo.i don't have any idea how long I've lazily watched the trials and triumphs of the rebuild but it's been a boatbuilding holiday for myself and those alike me. I can see there is still very much to do and it gives me some anxiety as one wishing to see her afloat and the work of building complete. Happy 2023 Leo. You're a sailor and a soldier. You gotta be a trooper to guide this process! 😎

Massive thanks for sharing this experience with us all watching on our chesterfields 😊 If I can share an observation, or word of caution. I noticed you were wrangling a bit with you table saw cuts in this video, putting your weight behind one cut to get it through. Kickbacks and other accidents happen when getting too comfortable with the equipment and needing to push it. Keep your blades sharp and take a breath when you catch yourself going after it a bit hard.
