Sir: Your explaination of LAMS was brilliantly simple and spot on. If I may , I would like to add a small, but useful, twist to you LAMS. I spent 30 years in the service of our country flying airplanes all over the world while using nothing but a compass for navigation. My flying was in airspace where my presence was not greatly appreciated by folks on the ground. Most of the flying was down in the weeds where conventional navigational aids were not functional. I relied heavily on the use of LAMS to position myself. Now here's the twist... Adding or subtracting 180 degrees from a compass heading is simple in a classroom enviorment, but add a handfull of mission stresses it can become quite a mental hurdle. For example, quickly figure the recprocal of 347 degrees while "yanking and banking" through the trees at 250 KTs, all the while, people on the ground are expressing their displeasure by offering forth various nasty airborne implements. Instead, make the math simple. Rather than the complexity of adding or subtracting 180 degrees try this.... "add 200 and then subtract 20" for the L part and "subtract 200 and add 20" for the M part. For mental midgets such as myself it takes the higher math out of the problem. Try it. With a little practice you'll like it. In the mean time...bottom out that seat and make yourself small.

My brain also prefers taking simple shortcuts like this. Even sitting here comfortably taking notes, every time he said to add to subtract 180 I waited for him to give the answer cause I didn't want to bother thinking it through. This is so much easier in practice.

Spot on! I am also a Pilot, I use this '200 & 20' method alot. I also use the tail end of my DI to get my reciprocals quckly 👍

Just read you post... imm learned that method but a just a bit different.... just remember 22. Add2 subtract 2..... add two to first number subtract 2 to next. Easy peasy. If it dosent work ue: heading 270. Just switch it up and subtract first then add.... it's alot easier. Similar.

Makes sense. The method he demonstrated must be used with a map? I am thinking what if you can't see point you want to go - how would you know direction of travel etc; hence I ask if this is method with map. New to this guys bare with me, Also, Is there a course or school online or in person that teaches navigation from basic all the way to highest level? I am in the Caribbean and need to learn this stuff FULLY.

@@us24575 some type of map if the route is new. If the route has been traveled before, using pacer/ranger beads, you can follow the azimuth and count your paces from each point to the other. You may have a margin of error based on individual pace length, but if you are looking for a certain "landmark" at or near each point, you can get where you want to go.

So interesting to see how much your videos have changed. Started watching you March 2020, I am working my way back. I really appreciate your compass training.

Thank you for your videos. They are very informative. I wanted to let everyone know that compasses are not accurate near lava rock. I learned this the hard way my second year after moving to NM. I went hiking using my compass, and ended up 1/2 mile off course. lost a water bottle, and unable to find anymore. when I stopped, i was facing east (which I learned later), but I got 3 different directions for north in 15 min. The SAR left me for dead due to the heat. None of my survival books said anything about lava rock throwing off compasses. But it is common here in NM.

Thank you very much! I have no experience where this is concerned; therefore, your content truly grants me a benefit I’d otherwise be unaccustomed to. Need to write this down for my bug out bag.

Brilliant explanation. When plotting the route to travel, wouldn't it have been s more direct route to dog leg around the obstical like a Roman road?

You must talk about it in other vids. Step counting. so like once you get to the bottom of the lake you have a number. cross to other side another # then apply the number it took you to get to the end of the lake and apply it to get you even with your starting point on the other side of the lake or dam near so then when you shoot again the 70 you should be close to the original line. Without the step count, you could seriously be a way of the parallel line from your starting point. but be dead on 70 and overshoot the home. I am learning all this stuff and need to make sure I am understanding. If what I said is wrong please correct me and why it is wrong, please. Thanks in advance.

Isnt a back azmuth just the opposite of your current direction of travel? Wouldnt it just be simpler to add way points qloung your route to and then just follow the the back azmuth to each waypoint on your way back .....like for example when i got to the lake id put a piece of fluorescent tape around something that could b seen from the otherside of the lake and so forth all the way around the lake then back on my original bearing to my cabin

Once I am on my azimuth, I look up, for landmark ( a mountain Peak, or a tall tree) to aim for, so I don't have to hike with my head down, looking at the compass.

Has anyone ever hear of the trick to find back azmitgh (+2) (-2)? Say you have this 70 degree azmigh.... just add 2 to first number then subtract 2 to second number... 340. Simple as that... if you choose a azimuth that this didnt work with, example. 270... switch and subtract 2 fiest then add 2... 90. I learned this in flight school works perfect and MUCH easier than the 180 method. Jyst remember 22
