Hallo, Thank you for loving Japan. I love your videos very much ! Because, one of reason, you speak very clean English English. It's very easy to listening for Japanese. And good for study English. Usually, many Japanese learn American English at the school. Also, we almost hear American English in japanese cities. We have a few opportunity of hearing English English in our arounds. I'd like to speak both English and American English. I'm looking forward your next videos. Thanks a lot ! I love your videos

Another "thank you" for your videos; been watching all of them before a future trip and found them both fun and informative. I read that many tourist attractions have stamps you can collect, is that something you've ever seen or done?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, so glad you've enjoyed them! :-) I've seen a few souvenir stamps - they have them out on a table so you're free to stamp them on anything you like. There's a stamp rally around the Yamanote line where you can collect a stamp from every station, and I found a special Gudetama one in Kyoto as a promotion - it's a fun idea! I could only collect two because I couldn't read enough Japanese to find the third one! :-)

I love Kyoto! Fushimi Inari is beautiful. The preserved Higashiyama area is nice, lots of old buildings and they've hidden away all the usual overhead cables. Lots of pretty souvenir shops, and a Hello Kitty teahouse cafe where you can have a themed meal, or cute wagashi and tea. One thing we enjoyed was hiring bikes from next to Arashiyama station (automated via a machine with English) then being able to explore a little further afield than all the tourists on foot, through rice fields to quieter temples. Otagi Nenbutsuji was a cute temple there and really quiet. If it's a clear day when at Miyajima, I'd recommend taking the cable car and then walking to the top of Mt Misen, lovely views over the Seto Inland Sea and all its islands. A deer did steal my husbands packet of crisps when we were back down by the water there, cheeky!
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 8 жыл бұрын
+NikkiBeee Ooh thanks for the tips, that's really helpful! :-) Hearing how busy the major tourist attractions get, I think I'd prefer to visit quieter places with more atmosphere rather than battle the crowds. Although Fushimi Inari is certainly on the list. Definitely hoping to hire bikes too, it sounds like a lovely way to spend the day!

@@cakeswithfaces Looking forward for your videos in the future. And yes I am planning to go to Japan. This very thought is making me anxious and excited at the same time, very weird. But in my heart I want to go and explore Japan. It is the language which isn't easy. Did you learn Japanese ?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 4 жыл бұрын
@@dred05m61 I felt the same before I first went! I've been teaching myself Japanese on and off for several years so I can get by in basic situations. But even if you don't know Japanese, the language barrier isn't as bad as you might think. Lots of signs are in English (including all the signs in stations) and most places have English menus. It helps if you can learn yes, no, please, thank you to be polite.
@dred05m61
@dred05m61 4 жыл бұрын
Cakes with Faces OK, you are right with basic situation to solve the language barrier with the use of English on the younger generation of Japan and being polite (very important). But what I really would like to do is reading katakana, hirigana and a little bit of kanji. So I can be independent and not relying on the grace of other people (sorry is my character).

+Sinochick Aww have a fantastic time! As +TheNerdyExplorer says, Hakone would be good for a first trip, so you can see Mount Fuji, and Lake Ashi. The first time, I went on a coach trip, but you can also go on the train yourself (get the Hakone Freepass). You can visit Enoshima and Kamakura together in one day - the bamboo garden at Hokokuji Temple in Kamakura was one of the best places I've been. Or Yokohama. Or Tokyo Disneyland! (does that count??) :-)

+crazybookworm93 Aww so glad you found it useful! These are all the things I wanted to know before I went! The train prices are actually pretty reasonable, a bit lower than London - When we first arrived, we each put 5000 Yen (about £30) on our Suica cards, and it lasted about 6 days, doing general travel around Tokyo, as well as the train from Haneda Airport and a return trip to Tokyo Disney Sea. Obviously it depends how much you use it, and the exchange rate, but trains around Tokyo aren't too pricey. :-)

I was wondering, would it better to arrive in Japan in the morning or later in the evening? I really appreciate your videos on these subjects :) Also am I able to use a debit card in Japan if I don't have a credit card?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 3 жыл бұрын
Personally I prefer to arrive later in the day. If you arrive in the afternoon, you can get to your hotel, freshen up, go out for something to eat, then have an early night and you're good to go. Last time I arrived early in the morning, had a relaxed day strolling around, but by the early evening I was crashing! So I think it's easier to get into the different timezone if you arrive in the afternoon. But I'd still book a flight arriving in the morning if the fares were good! :-) Yes, you can use a debit card in Japan - just check that it's commission-free for use abroad so you don't get extra charges. It should say on your bank's website. For me, my debit card's free for ATMs and my credit card's free for purchases, but I think it depends on the bank. Hope that helps! :-)

Im planning a trip to Tokyo with 3 friends in November 2018, yes a long time to wait but worth it as next April me and my friend are doing a Japan tour. For the November trip we have planned to go to Maid Cafes, Studio Ghibhli cafe and Monster Cafe and few others but my friend is Vegetarian though and do you know if they have many options at the themed cafes?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 8 жыл бұрын
+Neko Georgie Lots of time for planning! :-) In general, restaurants don't offer a vegetarian option by default like they do in the UK - but at theme cafes if there isn't something, your friend could have side orders / desserts (which are often the best bit!). I've been to the Alice in Wonderland cafe (amazing!) and they had a Cheshire Cat cheese pie. At maid cafes they might not have a vegetarian meal, but they'll have really cute parfaits and fancy drinks you can all enjoy. Hope that helps! My video about being vegetarian in Tokyo will be out in a few weeks :-)

thanks for the info! I'm planning on going to Tokyo (Akihabara) for my birthday. from Oct 1st to the 7th, so 6 days. Found flight for 2 people for about $1,200 is that good? Also I like Air bnb it's about $75 a night by the subway in Akihabara. And I have to go Disney Sea! Main Question... do i think $3,000 USD is enough?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 7 жыл бұрын
A birthday trip, that'll be amazing! I'm comparing with flights from the UK, so not sure about prices from the US, but the flights sound like a good deal compared to what I've paid. Remember with the time difference, you might get there the day after you fly (again, might be different from the US) so check how long you'll have. My recent trip was at the start of October and it was really warm and lovely! Disney Sea is awesome - they don't have it at any of the other Disney resorts - Journey to the Centre of the Earth Ride is awesome!

@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Hilshire If it's a serious allergy, it might be a good idea to print out a card with the Japanese on it, saying exactly what you can't eat, to make sure you're understood. Maid cafes usually have meals like omurice and katsu, so you should be able to avoid seafood - although lots of food will contain dashi (fish stock). Or you could do what I do at maid cafes and just have dessert and drinks. The parfaits are so cute!

How exciting!! :-) It will be warm and humid at that time so take it easy and have lots of drinks. It's not the rainy season, but it can rain at any time of year in Japan so be prepared just in case! Convenience stores sell cheap umbrellas if you get stuck (and hotels often lend them to guests for free!). Have an amazing time!

I'd like to hear about trips with children: I'm planning to take my daughter aged 12 and my son aged18 to Japan this summer. I know they don't like museums and castles, but what's good for kids to see, and are there any restrictions on where you can go, like capsule hotels, arcade machines, onsens? And are rail tickets cheaper, ir any other discounts?

Tokyo Chapter is a really useful blog about travelling in Japan with children (their Instagram's really useful too): www.thetokyochapter.com/ You can take them to most places - maybe izakaya in the evening wouldn't be appropriate as they're more places for adults to go drinking, but if they're with you it's fine to go to arcades and most places. Children can go to arcades on their own during the daytime, and should be accompanied by an adult in the evening. They wouldn't be allowed in pachinko parlours. At a capsule hotel, check the individual hotel's rules, as some might have a minimum age, but there isn't a general rule. They're allowed into onsen, however as they're over 7, they can only go in the bath for their gender. Of course, if you have a private bath, you can all go in together. On the trains, kids are under 12, so unfortunately both yours will pay the adult fares. A 12 year old may be able to get childrens fare at some attractions - it depends on the place. Where to go depends on what they're interested in; here are some ideas (I have videos about many of these places!): - TeamLab Borderless / TeamLab Planets - Akihabara - they'll love the arcades, purikura and gachapon! - Lots of fun places in Ikebukuro eg the world's largest anime shop, world's largest gachapon shop, an aquarium, shops in Sunshine City - Trick Art Museum in Odaiba - Karaoke - Unko Museum - Small Worlds Tokyo - New Samurai / Ninja Museum (you can try throwing ninja stars, etc) - Observation deck - Themed cafes - Conveyor belt sushi - Shops: Kiddyland in Harajuku, Character Street in Tokyo Station (both have cute character merch) - Giant Gundam in Odaiba

+KrulKat Hotels in Tokyo are roughly £70-£100 per night, although it varies depending on the time of year, etc. The flight and hotel will be the most expensive part of your trip. I hope you can go someday! :-)

I've never been there during Golden Week but I've heard it gets busy. This year it finishes on 6th May so if you can, save the most popular attractions for after that time. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time anyway! :-)

@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Megan! For 99% of vending machines you don't need any ID or special cards, you can just pay with cash (or your Suica train card with some of them!). You might need ID for vending machines selling alcohol or cigarettes - but you can get them easily from a convenience store instead (and they're everywhere too!). Hope that helps!

I don't know whether you feel it's a bit different to put on this particular channel but could you talking about how bathing is arranged and onsens? Imagine a scared 14 year old trying it for the first time. It really scared me but really got me interested. Just a thought.

+Emily Mitchell (Xi3motyiX) I'd be just as scared too! But lots of people say it's fine and seems completely relaxed when you're there - I've actually never tried an onsen but heard lots of good things about them.

@@cakeswithfacesOh I'm planning on traveling to other cities. And now that ive seen some of your videos I like the idea of visiting Sakurajima and the other islands. But I do plan on taking the train a lot.
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 5 жыл бұрын
@@meylinguzman3235 In that case, I'd get both - use the JR Pass for shinkansen and JR trains, and use the Suica for local, non-JR trains and metro/subway trains. You can use the Suica all over Japan, not just Tokyo. If you plan your trip well you can save money with a shorter JR Pass than your trip - if you stay put for your first and last days, you'll only need the JR Pass for the middle section. There's so much to see on Kyushu, I really enjoyed it! My fav was the Beppu Hells, and there are lots of other interesting places - I talked about some of them in my Fukuoka round-up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5TChIKcjLOtrac

I'm only going for probably 6 days, should I stay in Tokyo or should I also explore other places?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 6 жыл бұрын
The first couple of times I stayed just in Tokyo, and there's enough to do to spend 10+ days just in Tokyo if you want to. You can also do day trips in the surrounding area. But there's lots more to explore in the rest of Japan too, so really it's down to what you're interested in and what you want to do :-) Lots of people go to Kyoto, where you can see more of traditional Japan. Just make sure you've got long enough in each place to explore and see everything you want to, rather than rushing and spending all your time travelling around.

How much does it usually cost to stay in Japan for 7-10 days?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 6 жыл бұрын
The hotels I've stayed in are around £60-80 a night, although there are cheaper options available (and many that are more expensive too!). Flights depend on where you're flying from, and will be the most expensive part of your trip. As for everything else, food and transport aren't as much as you'd think - I made a video where I recorded everything I spent for 3 days around Tokyo (not trying to save money, just spending what I normally would) - hope it helps! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpzOeaWKhticapY

Hi, which is the best mobile data phone service to use?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 4 жыл бұрын
Personally I get a pocket wifi - the reason being that you can connect several devices, so if there are two of you, you can both connect your phones, iPad, etc to one device. I get mine from japan-rail-pass.com There are cheaper places but they've always been reliable and good.

Yes! Suica/Passmo work in other cities in Japan, and vice versa - so if you buy one from another city (eg Icoca) you can use it in Tokyo.

where is the best place to find cheap anime figures?
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 7 жыл бұрын
Nakano Broadway! It's cheaper than Akihabara - although Akihabara is more fun, has more atmosphere and probably a bigger choice. Shop around as the prices vary quite a bit. I like the shops with glass cabinets where people sell second-hand figures (usually in mint condition) - great for hunting! Also I heard that Denden Town in Osaka is also a good (cheap) place to buy figures. I'll be making a video about buying figures in Akihabara, so look out for that! :-)
