The Hits and Misses is a comfort for me and understanding that planting doesn't always work great. Seeing failure as an opportunity to learn something new.

As a gardener, I realize just how much time and effort it takes to maintain flowerbeds. It is quite rewarding though. If one is not independently wealthy, the best window of opportunity to spend a lot of time doing it is on the weekends and during retirement. It feels great to spend a lot of time in the gardens. A general question - often to enrich the soil in a garden bed, we often add material (compost, etc.). Do gardeners actually remove old soil periodically to prevent the material from getting higher and higher? This must be a tricky task with perrenials and shrubs in place in a garden. it easy to remove the top layer of mulch from a garden and replace it with fresh mulch, but I have to believe the other material grows up over time and then the bed must be completely redone.

We let our mulch break down and turn to dirt. Sometimes we will remove some near the edge of a bed if needed.

Heidi… love watching your videos!.. I have ordered from you for my plants for spring for a couple of years… I have a request.. can you maybe do a garden with plants/ shrubs for us gardeners that struggle with deer pressure!… I’ve tried some sprays but I have yard sprinklers so it washes off quickly… any ideas are appreciated!!

The videos of the northern Michigan garden that I do is focused on deer issue.
