Eliza Greenman is doing some of the best thinking about use of apples/orchards for a variety of purposes & markets. Very good video.

This was an excellent presentation and it explains why I have had many of the problems I have had over the years. Also, very instructive were her comments on moisture. I have a crabapple tree which I have observed that, despite what I do, produces good fruit and retains its leaves into October (NE Illinois) during low rainfall years, but which will lose its ratty leaves in mid to late August during high rainfall years!

I probably have six or seven heirloom varieties about 12 trees, on one acre. Not looking to sell them, cooking, cider, hard cider.

If you get your soil how it should be, insects & weeds will diminish.
