I would recommend making a list of guests very early! This helps in getting a numbers estimate for your venue hunting! My husband & I made a list in excel & then had a column for whether or not we thought the guest would come. It helped create a more realistic number in our heads! Try not to stress too much. If you're finding it all overwhelming take a step back for a day & remember that it will all be perfect in the end. ☺️💖

Congratulations y’all! Wedding planning can be stressful and overwhelming. The first place to start that I’ve found most helpful is the budget…how much are y’all willing to spend total on each wedding. After you decide that, both of you make a list of your top 3 necessities/must haves/non-negotiable (like venue, photography, food, etc.). That’ll make it easier to decide things from there! Also, a tip I learned and found out from experience… do online RSVPs through a website. People DO NOT mail them back or forget. Websites make things cheaper (stamps are expensive) and you can also set it up to remind people to RSVP via text. Hope this helps and best wishes! 🥂💛

How exciting, congrats you two! I’m in the middle of planning my own wedding as well over in NY and I don’t have a wedding planner. Typically what’s best is discussing an estimated guest count first. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you’ll want to make sure whichever venue you choose can accommodate how many people you want. Some places will require a minimum (example: you will have to pay for at least 100 people regardless of how many actually come). It’s kind of hard to explain but as you research I’m sure you’ll learn more from venue to venue. Once you pick the venue, they’ll give you available dates and you choose one. Oftentimes the venue may suggest certain caterers, DJs, etc, so that can be a big help with researching. My venue requires that we get a wedding cake through a specific bakery. It’s a LOT to plan for and think about, but it can be very fun and exciting. Thanks for taking us along on your journey and I’m so excited to see how it all goes!

Just make sure you have fun and the best is to have someone else deal with logistics, even if that means someone from the bridal party. I saw so many MIL and bridezilla stories so I think the happiest weddings are the ones were the couple just gets to enjoy everything without being too stressed and doing what they want instead of stressing out about making everyone else happy.

My partner and I got engaged end of September, and had very similar feelings as you seem to. There's so much to do, and so expensive! We started with a list of family/friends to get an idea how big of a venue we'd need, then reaching out to venue locations from there. Good luck and excited to see the process!

My biggest piece of advice is set a budget, decide what you want to spend the most money on aka what is most important for you (for me that was food and a fabulous photographer), and hire a wedding planner! Honestly I know it is extra money but having that stress taken off of you, especially on the day of, is priceless. Plus we didn't have to worry about set up before the wedding or tear down afterwards, which was so nice.

I know I’m late to this video, but for your German dream wedding, did you check out Schloss Heidecksburg in Rudolstadt (it’s about half an hour away from Ilmenau) it’s a really pretty baroque palace and it’s possible to get married there. And the town is really pretty 😊

Hi and congratulations!! 😊 As someone who planned her Scottish wedding from a different country, I would definitely recommend hiring a wedding planner, especially since you will be coordinating two different events (one from abroad). It does seem like a lot of money, but it was totally worth it. Even if you do the LA part yourself, I would recommend looking at a wedding planner in Germany. That way someone who knows the current wedding ceremony and reception standards and practices in Germany can guide you, rather than relying on your fiance's family only. My husband is Scottish and while we have tons of friends and family there, my Scottish wedding coordinator was AMAZING at figuring out how my wishes can become reality, and having one contact person for it all was really key to not being overwhelmed. Plus I didn't have the family and friend social dynamics (so no friends or family had their feelings hurt or were offended if I wasn't in agreement) playing a part. And it was the BEST day. I hope this makes sense and good luck!

We started with the guest list. Because of the high number of guests we had difficulties finding a location. As soon as we found the ideal spot (a hotel) we decided on the day one year in advance. We then also decided to do a small wedding first, only with parents and siblings at the Standesamt (municipal building) on the same day one year before. We invited the family to dinner afterwards at one of our favorite restaurants. A year later, on our first wedding anniversary we had the big church wedding with the big party in the hotel. Two very different and beautiful weddings. I'm really happy for you that you decided on two weddings, you'll love it ;)

I'm planning our wedding for this summer! We started out with a draft guest list to get an idea of how many guests we would have. We were flexible with our date, we didn't have a specific date in mind. From there we looked at different venues - what was offered in their package price, was there a minimum guest count for certain months/days of the week. As we went to the different venues we asked about availability for certain months. Some venues were already booked 2 years in advance! The venue we chose had more openings for 2022 at the time we put down our deposit so we were able to pick a date we wanted. Once we had a venue and date, it was time to look and book the other vendors! If you pick a venue where you have to bring in your own vendors, ask the venue for a list of vendors they have worked with in the past! From there it's a matter of booking the rest of your vendors (if they're not included with your venue). Create a vision board as you go, it will help keep everyone on the same page! Can't wait to see how your planning goes!

I got married at a castle in France. Omg it was crazyyyy. If you get along well with your future in laws, and they don’t mind to help to plan, then rope them in. If not, hire a wedding planner. For the wedding in LA, you will be on site so that’s easier to manage but for Germany, you won’t be so it’s not a wise move to not have a wedding planner. I didn’t get a wedding planner and regretted it to no end. I was so stressed for my castle wedding that I was absolutely upset that whole day. It was a nightmare. There are also a lot of online wedding planning tools you can use which are US based which makes the whole process so much easier.

I do not envy you on the logistics! The paperwork alone! Like, will the wedding in LA be the officially registered one? Or the one in Germany? And as a German I just known the bureaucracy of international marriage certificates will be stressful, so I dunno if it might be a better idea to have the official one in LA and then just have a informal one in Germany.

I'm sure there will be stressful parts, but hopefully your wedding planning is fun! My friend got engaged last summer and will be having her wedding this summer. The first thing she and her fiancée reserved was their venue. It's good to do early because you'll have more options for venues you can choose from and then you will hopefully have more options for the date that you want. It's good to have an idea of how many people you want to invite so you know what size venue to look for. However, from my understanding, most venues will let you book without having the exact number. They will usually give you a deadline closer to the wedding date of when they need the final number, and this also has to do with the food. As you mentioned, many venues require you to use their vendors for catering, so that's usually the most important reason they need final numbers at least a few months before the wedding date. Plus they may charge a fee depending on the numbers of guests you want at the venue regardless of the food. Once you have secured the venue, then you can focus on the guest list and narrow down who you want to invite. Keep in mind, a number of people may not be able to attend, so you could also have a backup guest list to fill in when people from your first list can't make it. Make sure the RSVP deadline is early enough for you to report your final number of guests to the venue, but also give you enough time if you want to make any adjustments to your guest list. If there will be multiple dishes that the guest can choose from for their meal, you should include that list with the RSVP so they can tell you if they are attending and what dish they want at the same time. I think those are the two biggest things you'll want to work on early. Everything else you can plan out a timeline for. You can do it!!! Just focus on one thing at a time :)

While wedding planning is stressful, I completely understand not wanting to do it all at once, but I don’t think your goal of picking one aspect of your wedding each month is going to go well (maybe posting one video a month). I say that because as a result of the pandemic, couples are looking to get married in 2023 and those DJs, photographers, caterers and venues are going to be booked up fairly quickly. Usually, once you find a venue, everything else will fall into place. You don’t need to have an exact guest count, keep in mind that about 20% of those you invite won’t show, especially if it’s a week day. Once you have a general guest count, you can have a better idea of how big your venue needs to be. Try not to spend your engagement just planning your wedding. Enjoy being engaged. I've got engaged in September 2019. We went to look at venues in late November and then just 4 months later, Covid happened. So here we are, February 2022, and we're still not married yet. We've just been taking our time figuring out what the perfect day looks like for us after these two ridiculous years. I would say the first two things we wanted to figure out are the date, two dates in your case, and the guest list. When you start looking at venues these are usually the first two questions they ask you so it's helpful to know ahead of time! Hope that helps and congratulations to you both!
