In this video, I start on the design process for an ambitious multi-deck coal-hauler representing the C&O main line between Elkhorn and Paintsville, with a little bit of Gorre & Daphetid whimsy thrown in for good measure.

Oh my! Looking lovely. Paranoia suggests the client drill a small hole into that void to make sure it really is a void - depending on just when he saw it, there may have been later stuff done that he didn't see.

I just love the term; ‘Herniated Helix’. Not a term I’ve heard here in the UK. I am amazed that you still have your English accent, despite your use of American terminology. I tend to readily pick up accents and if I lived for a year in the US, you would believe that I was born there. I do enjoy watching your videos. Best, Jason.

This is really nice, I know this line well and I'm modeling the former CC&O/Clinchfield line about 30 miles to the south of Elkhorn, where it interacts with my N&W/NS at St Paul. I believe the siding you are referring to near Pool Point is called Trammel by the railroad. Also, there is a place on the Clinchfield that swings back and forth, dropping a few hundred feet right beside itself, just down the hill, but with 8 miles between. That's about 100 miles south of Elkhorn, in North Carolina, but that's ok, and it's entirely prototypical to do such a thing, although not on the C&O, it's on the CRR, but we must do things in the model form to make our layouts wrap up into a square room and especially to deal with elevation on multi-level layouts. I also have a bridge up at 80" or so, I love that concept, it solved a problem for me and I think is very interesting. I'm building it and sharing those videos on our Model Railroading Live channel, but I'm not trying to promote anything, I just model and share. I enjoy your content quite a bit, and have for several years now. Thanks for sharing and keep it up.

The layout design videos are my favourite ones. The earlier diagrams would be clearer if you shaded in the boards to differentiate them from the aisles (similarly to maps having different colours for land and water). The lines representing track also look similar to the edges of the boards, even though the track lines have the feint colouring either side.

Anything extra I do on the early diagrams adds to the time and therefore the cost.

I'd move the bathroom and not be worrying of trains passing through it. 👍🏼

I disagree. A bathroom close to the layout is a big plus for both construction and operation. The owner will be spending a lot of time in this room.

@@mpeterll To be more precise, what I mean is to relocate the bathroom to the right of the room where that little 'square' is and then that opens up the whole wall for running trains unobstructed. 😀 Cheers!
