I always enjoy your videos! I'm in zone 7a, St. Louis. A few years ago I made a gardening mistake. Planted Hydrangea tree form and a couple of Hydrangea bushes. All Fire Light with the bushes being Tidbits. My front yard is full afternoon sun, but I thought with a little extra water when temps became hot I'd get away with it. They bloomed a beautiful creamy white, but that's as far as they went. Too much sun in the afternoon and the blooms died never reaching the pink to dark red stage. *Stick with me I'm getting to the Butterfly bushes, lol.* Transplanted all of them to the backyard a month ago for morning sun (fingers crossed I'll see leaf's blooming next spring) Now, I have a spot where the Hydrangeas were. I had to dig about 2 feet down to get most of the root ball out. After filling the spot back up and making sure the soil wasn't packed I did my research this time and figured Butterfly bushes is the way to go with all that afternoon full sun. Plus, the soil isn't packed any more so that should be great for no wet feet. I looked over the Proven Winners site and I believe the Lo & Behold Pink Micro Chip and Blue Chip Jr. should do the job. I've always had good luck with Proven Winners plants and I buy over 100 annuals from them every spring. I'm used to the bubble bees every summer I plant Lantana (also in the front yard with full afternoon sun.) in my large Mexican Talavera planters and watering them by hand doesn't seem to upset them. Can't say that about the darn wasp I came across last summer, ouch!

The exact planting method will largely depend on your soil. Because we have heavy clay that retains water & butterfly bushes hate to have wet feet, that's why we plant them high.

Jenny,, I will be planting my Miss Molly this spring, will plant it high, will not add anything to the planting hole. You mention mulch and Proven Winners suggests 2-3" of mulch. What are your thoughts on that, what kind of mulch would you suggest to add around bush?

Ok… with my Pugster Amethyst, you’re saying that I can plant it in my hard packed clay soil without amending & leave it about 2 niches above the soil level for water run off and don’t mulch up against the trunk and it should survive our 7a winter? I’ll bite the bullet & plant it. Ty for the great video & giving me the confidence.

I've been watching a bunch of them planted at the back of a shopping center that has stopped construction. They've had ZERO care, weeds all around & they're growing & blooming along. Seems they thrive on neglect. I'm looking to put one or more in our new yard, love their later bloom time. Medicinal plant too!

@@GardeningwithCreekside seem untroubled by Japanese beetles too! Those buggers are eating EVERYTHING right now. Next year I'll know to put traps up early as they must leave pheromones on their favorites. Last house was only 4 miles away but rarely saw any. Had more birds there & I'm sure that helped. I made friends with the rooster when I worked at a local garden center by collecting them in my empty lunch bag & feeding them to him 😆

@GardeningwithCreekside

I only fertilize them in early Spring with an all purpose slow release fertilizer (like Plant-tone). They do not need to be fed water soluble fertilizer weekly so yes I would stop that.

Great information about the flowers i just love the color of it, this is off topic but when do you trim up a Gardena?
@GardeningwithCreekside
@GardeningwithCreekside 4 жыл бұрын
Immediately after they bloom. So run outside and trim them really quick [he he he]. They bloom on old wood so don't wait too long before you prune them. You want them to have plenty of time to put on bud sets for next year.

There are 5 bushes in a span of about 20-25'. I have found that in our climate the butterfly bushes are semi-evergreen. They certainly aren't as full as they are now, but they will retain some leaves.

I thought “Butterfly bush “ was a joke and that it didn’t really attract butterflies. WAS I EVER WRONG!!! I now have 5 very effective butterfly bushes (NJ). I just bought whatever the store had- nothing fancy- all attract butterflies (tiger swallowtails, monarchs, skippers,…) and bees. RUN to the nursery and get one! Oh! some of mine get less than 8 hours and they’re fine for me.

Have you found your bushes to be invasive? I've seen a lot of discussion around that topic this year. I planted a Nanho Blue this year (which is a sterile variety.) Even it's first year in the ground it has really taken off so I really look forward to seeing it come back next year.

All of Proven Winners butterfly bushes are noninvasive so they are safe to plant. Otherwise I would contact your local Agricultural Extension office and ask them about it. They are a great resource for your region’s information!
