About this video:
Lets visit a plant fair! Each year in the first weekend of May, the Sakonnet Plant fair takes place in Little Compton RI. This is the 2nd time I've attended. Nurseries and plants people get together to offer unique and rare plants for sale. Its a fun fair to attend as there many likeminded gardeners around. Your bound to have a couple of great conversations about plants and gardening. Once I got home it was time to tackle planting some new perennials into the garden. I am trying to keep up with planting my plant stash this season. So far so good! Lets see if I can keep it up. Also, an update on my gomphrena, and some other garden happenings. Thanks for watching - Steph (Gardening in Massachusetts zone 6b) #gardening #gardeningtips #plants

The Dawn Redwood was actually growing during the time that dinosaurs walked the Earth. Scientists thought that they had been extinct for over 10,000 years. Explorers found a grove of living Dawn Redwood in Vietnam. Unfortunately, the war broke out at that time and they had to leave quickly. After the war they went back and fortunately found the grove of Dawn Redwood still standing. They collected seeds from the Dawn Redwood and planted them around the world in various places. Some were planted at the Los Angeles Zoo. They are growing near the Avian cages.

Good morning! I also planted the Heirloom variety sweet peas. I’m in zone 8b (now) and planted the seeds straight in the garden. They were doing beautifully until the worst case of aphids I’ve ever seen on any plant occurred. Be on the look out. They were planted in my dahlia raised bed and I took them out as I was afraid the aphids might attack my dahlias as well. Come to find out, there are many different types of aphids and my dahlias may have been safe anyway. I didn’t realize. I’m going to try again in the winter. 🤞

HAHA, just like me. I planted the bulbs last year; they look nice. But when the Garden centers start selling plants and you see the ones you want and know where they will be good, you need to move the bulbs. Living in Upstate, it's like there is no spring. Spring seems more like winter than spring, and then summer hits. I want to get those new plants in the ground so they can work on roots.

Hi Steph! Next time you are at Briggs nursery if you stand with your back to the building looking in the left-hand corner there is a very large Dawn Redwood. You can walk under the canopy. It is pretty magical!

We have three Ogon Golden Dawn Redwoods. They are beautiful and no problem at all. The golden leaves stay that way until they turn a burnt red in the fall. Everybody that comes to our garden, loves these trees. A very neat tree and growing in a perfect slim pyramid. I think, the only thing to be aware of is that the tree could get to be 100 feet tall and 15-25 feet wide. This will take time, of course. The lifespan of these trees is 100 years.

About 5 years ago I moved my variegated solomon's seal from a semi shaded area out into the full sun on the west side of the house in 7B Maryland and thought it would scorch and die, but instead it's thriving and has formed a dense area that keeps out all the weeds (except the occasional chinese wisteria that a neighbor planted). It's such a valuable ground cover to me.

@@HookedandRooted I got the variegated Solomon's seal 3 years back from a plant sale organized by our local library. I planted it on the west side of the house and it receives full Sun. It does so well in that area that I divide it every year and move it to other areas of my garden. I garden in MA.

I've been really enjoying your channel ever since I came across it, but this video just seems even more fun & informative than usual. You sound like me, getting impatient and moving things, I've done that a few times this year but in today's case I have a pop star hydrangeas that just wasn't performing like it's twin so I dug into the ground to find it in standing water because we have had so much rain recently. I raised her up and backfilled with a bit of potting soil and compost. Hopefully that helps for now.

Var. Solomon Seal does like 'moist' IMO. I have mine in a low spot and it's now around 8' diameter in short order. Another colony again in a lower spot that tends to retain water. Another few stalks in Hosta bed, not wet - it just kind of sits there. Just my experience.

Also, we came across a Dawn Redwood 🌲 and my husband had a “plant moment” at the nursery just this past Mother’s Day! I just wanted to buy plants and garden all day that day haha He researched and found that it existed around the dinosaur 🦕 age and it was rediscovered in a small part of China and it was brought back to be propagated and grown in the States! That first nursery you stopped at, Cochato nursery, is right up the street from me! They specialize in unique hostas and other specialty plants, as you now might be able to tell from the plant selections you were looking at. The owner is a member of a Hosta society, and along with the nursery, they have a beautiful wooded Hosta display garden surrounding 3 koi ponds. It's a must-see. They have a website too, so you might want to check it out. But if you go, bring your wallet because some of their plants are quite pricey. I love it when you show local nurseries, too. Some of the selections you show are very inspiring. Keep up the great work.. and George does a great job too!

That ginger takes years and years of time to look like anything. One plant would do almost nothing for a ground cover effect, even after years. My sister had it in NY, bought about five to begin with. I have to say beautiful effect, glossy leaves, but after five years it was finally looking like something, but not far and wide, just in the area where they had been planted. They were finally connecting.

Yes, I have heard people in our area talk about it. The plants I purchased were from nurseries, so I feel fairy confident that the soil is sterilized/clean. However its definitely wise to take precautions with plant sharing/plant sales. Cleaning off all the soil from the roots, and planting in clean soil in your garden is probably a good step to take.
