Proven Winners ColorChoice Flowering Shrubs

Proven Winners ColorChoice Flowering Shrubs

In this series, our panel of plant experts looks at gardening scenarios submitted by you and recommends plants they think would solve problems and look stunning while doing it.
Today we focus on Ann's USDA zone 8a garden. Her planting conditions include morning sun, dappled afternoon shade, and deer who eat her hydrangeas. Ann has beautiful daffodils and an osmanthus hedge already in her space but after spring, the garden lacks color and interest.

You taught me a new term, the “dog leg” of abelias! A lot of mine have a single stem towering about two feet above the rest of the plant…I’ve been wondering if I should cut -or- if the rest of the plant will catch up! Also, I have ‘funshine’ in my garden and it’s a great color!

We call them “stray hairs” here in NE Texas. 😉 It is recommended to cut them back into the plant to obscure the cut.

Love that! Yes, as Heather said, you can prune the plant to help with the habit/shape ideally in late winter/spring ☺

I have this going on with my proudberry coralberries. Should I cut those back or will I lose berries?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 ай бұрын
@@Ava_yes_Im_a_proud_therian You would lose berries from that branch you prune off but you can still remove it to help with the plant's shape if you'd like. With Proud Berry in the future, you can prune it back by about half its total height in late winter/early spring. Remove the oldest, thickest stems every 4-5 years to encourage vigorous young growth.☺

I had to laugh during the daffodil section of this episode because I to can’t stand how long it takes for the greenery to die back either. So I have a few questions: 1. when is a good time to dig them all up? I want to transplant them to the back of my garden along the fence so when my other plants come up they can hide the daffodils’ foliage. 2. how do I make all my daffodils bloom? It’s usually only about a 1/4 to a 1/3 of the grouping that ever blooms. The areas where the daffodils are has grown quite a bit. Is it because the new shoots don’t bloom until the following spring and then from there after? I look forward to receiving anyone’s assistance on this.

Thank you for your questions! The best time to dig and transplant them would be now, when the foliage is still visible so you can see them and dig them with as little damage as possible. As for them not blooming, the main reason that daffodils wouldn't bloom would be too much shade. There are many other reasons that other bulbs may not bloom, but pretty much the only cause of daffodils would be shade, so try moving those as well. ☺
@CuriousinNY
@CuriousinNY 2 ай бұрын
@@pwcolorchoice they are always in the sun, even now. But where I want to move them to will be partly shaded at times. So, for those times, how many hours of sun do they need? This way I can determine if the fence line will be appropriate. So, since sunlight isn’t the problem, could it be they need fertilizing? If so, what would you recommend and what should the NPK be like?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 ай бұрын
@@CuriousinNY A full-sun location is 6 or more hours of direct sunlight. If sun hasn't been the issue, it could be due to overcrowding - moving some of them can help the plants to store enough food in their bulbs this year to help them bloom next year 🙂

All great ideas. Unfortunately, I have found that Pollypetite hibiscus is NOT deer resistant. So that wouldn't make a great alternative for hydrangeas. It is still a gorgeous plant/flower.
