I'm in zone 5 and just saw the caterpillars on my parsley last week. The last two years they produced stunning butterflies. Next year I plan on growing more just to see these amazing creatures 💝🦋🦋🦋

I have these in my garden on my fennel and parsley. Oh, I’d say about one month ago. No I didn’t pick them off and no I didn’t kill him! They made beautiful butterflies by the way lol.

Here in Central Florida 9b I grow dill just for the Monarch Butterfly. Dill is quite the companion plant. I thank you for the addition of carrots.

Dill for monarch butterflies? Even if the Caterpillars eat dill it won't give them the protective bitter taste to their enemies that the Milk weed gives them.

I was cutting my huge fennel back and noticed over 20. I protected as many as I could from lizards and birds. I even hatched 3 for the grandkids. They were so amazed as was I. Very interesting morphing process.

They are the state butterfly here in New Jersey. We grow extra parsley and dill just to attract them. My wife gathers the caterpillars and puts them in a butterfly house. When they turn to butterflies we release them. If its to late in the season, they form their chrysalis and stay all winter. When spring comes they hatch into butterflies.

So glad you posted this. They ate a bunch of my dill this year - but no biggie. I always have lots of dill for my pickles but for these little fellers, too.

Saw them on our carrots a few weeks ago. (NW tip of VA). Probably a dozen or so in our large deck planters. I figured they were butterflies but did not know which.

This was the first summer I had them on my parsley. I didn’t know what they were at first so googled them to find out that they were black swallowtail caterpillars. I felt honoured that they found my garden and left them to munch away at their hearts content. Hope they’re back next year. I’ll plant some more parsley just for them.

Good tip, in my garden they always seem to gravitate towards the fennel , even though I have plenty of celery, celeriac, carrot, parsnip, dill, parsley growing. The local cardinals always seem to find them before they have a chance to transform into butterflies though!

Very nice. I can’t grow parsley past May here. It gets too hot and goes to seed. I’m stunned it can take Texas heat? I need to start seeds now that it is finally cooling off. Tomorrow looks like our last day in the upper 80’s.

@@2MinuteGardenTips I was also surprised that they didn't all go to seed. Only one out of 3 did...I left it to go to seed. The butterflies continued to lay eggs on it.🙂

Thank you for this information. Today I found 5 of these caterpillars on one fennel plant. I knew I couldn’t get rid of them and I thought I’d have to sacrifice my fennel. But… I left two long rows of carrots in the ground from last year, I wanted them to attract the parasitic wasps with their blooms. So tomorrow I’ll gently relocate the caterpillars and they’ll have more than they can eat.

In grow zone seven, tell me your secret to growing carrots since you say so easy. Thanks
@2MinuteGardenTips Жыл бұрын
Direct seed them when it's cool, since carrots won't germinate in hot weather. Place a board over the area you sowed seeds. Soak the area. Keep it moist for 10-14 days. Remove board. Let them grow. That's about all it takes. Just make sure you have very loose soil for proper root development. Carrots don't grow well in heavy soil.

I bought a parsley plant just for attracting black swallowtail butterflys, where would be the best place in the garden to plant my parsley for the butterfly's to want to land on it and lay their eggs? Like for example should it be in an open area away from other ornamental plants or should the parsley be planted within all the other plants or near a butterfly bush?

Yeah, that’s a common mistake, but as long as you recognize it for next time, that’s what counts. I recommend growing carrots and relocating them, or just allow one parsley plant to be a host and move them all to it. They’re a good bug.

Anything that ate your hard-working garden and takes away your harvest is a parasite, pick away, and then blow torch them🔥
@2MinuteGardenTips Жыл бұрын
There are downsides to every insect. Dragonflies can eat bees. Bees can and will eat fruits. If we do that, we will kill every insect and then we will go extinct. Some insects, particularly invasive ones from other continents, may have little value and should be disposed of. These shouldn’t, and failure to understand that will do more harm than good.
