Planted Bristol Shubunkin Goldfish tank

This is my Bristol Shubunkin Planted Tank. It is bare bottom tank with green foxtail plants in the background. The plants are wrapped in soil with a piece of cloth to prevent goldfish from digging out the plants.
After many trial and error on plants and ways of keeping them, I find this whole combination to be the most effective way of keeping plants for goldfish. Its easy to clean, low maintenance and the fish absolutely love them.
The plants grow very fast!

Just a regular top soil that you can buy from Home Depot, Lowes or Ace.

Not sure which top soil you are referring to. The one that I used are mostly sand. May be you are mistaking top soil with garden soil or potting soil.

some goldfish destroy aquatic plants. it's more determined by your individual fish with goldfish. I have live plants with my Shubunkins and they pick at them, but they have never decimated them. I don't like fake plants, because you get none of the real good benefits of plants from them, they don't help reduce waste in the water, they don't put more oxygen in the water, and they don't have the potential of being edible for your fish if they need a snack, or are in a crowded tank and can't get to a lot of the food you drop in because the other fish are faster. real plants don't have a good substitute in my mind. and honestly, it's trial and error with plants, Anacharis and Anubius are generally good for goldfish, but there are probably plenty you can put with them.

This is a beautiful aquarium for now, but these shubunkins are going to need a lot more room (basically a pond!). A good rule of thumb with single tailed goldfish is 20 gallons for the first fish, and 15 gallons for EACH additional fish. Though beautiful, this tank is majorly overstocked

not necessarily the case. it's far too dogmatic to say X fish per Y gallons. we have no idea what this person's water change regime is. it's common practice for Asian discus breeders to do 100% water changes daily. Such a water change regime keeps dangerous nitrogen compounds at extremely low levels. this tank is filled with plants that, considering the amount of goldfish in there, must be growing at a tremendous rate. if they were growing slowly the goldfish would reduce them to stumps in a day or two. the fast growth means that they are consuming a lot of nitrogen (in the form of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, whatever). you could argue that even with an extreme water change regime, "overstocking" could lead to a collapse in the filter's beneficial bacteria colony and mini cycles and whatever else. but if the filter is adequately sized and well maintained there's no reason to expect that. X fish per Y gallons is a fine guideline for beginners. but it is by no means a RULE of keeping goldfish. experienced fishkeepers know what they're doing when it comes to stocking levels, and "overstocking" your tank is not dangerous for the fish if you are capable of monitoring and maintaining the quality of your water. i see no flashing in these fish... i see no clamped fins in these fish... i see no huddling in these fish... i see no listlessness in these fish... i see no signs of parasites in these fish... this person's shubunkins appear to be in great health! i'm not worried about them. in terms of physical space, it might get a bit cramped when the fish are at their largest, but who are we to say the owner of this tank doesn't have well laid plans for crossing that bridge when he/she comes to it?

Good discussion here (even if it is several years in the making). I agree that our hobby suffers from a number of misconceptions. However, it is far more common for fish to be abused by unintentional overstocking, than for experienced fish keepers to intentionally overstock their tanks safely. When beginners attempt such a set-up, it usually results in frustration, lost time and money, and a horrible slow and painful death for the fish. I agree that this fish keeper appears to have healthy fish at the time this video was shot. If he or she does indeed have the knowledge for how to keep these fish in these conditions in the long-term, a disclaimer for those *who do not* is always in order. If a poster keeps an overstocked tank and provides no explanation for a newcomer on how to keep such a situation viable, then it should come as no surprise when responsible fish keepers post a warning.
