So your garlic has sprouted and started growing. Here's what you need to do right now to make sure your garlic plant has everything it needs to make it through the winter and be ready for the spring and summer push.

When it comes to growing garlic in South Africa, growing garlic in cape town or growing garlic in winter rainfall areas or growing garlic in humid climates the principles are the same once the garlic has sprouted and broken through the ground. What are these principles?
1. You need to make sure your garlic is well fed so they can put on as much growth as they possibly can before they head into winter dormancy. Due to the fact that garlic will not grow new leaves in spring, but rather grow existing leaves, you need to make sure you get as many leaves to form and develop during the autumn months.
2. You need to put preventative measures in place to reduce fungal issues, and more specifically rust on garlic. In winter rainfall areas rust is a major problem when growing your own garlic and a regular application of copper fungicide is required to protect the garlic leaves through the winter months.
3. You need to mulch your beds and keep the roots of your garlic protected. The protection your garlic roots need are from the cold as well as from rapid temperature changes. Here in South Africa it is easy to get 25+ degree winter days and without mulch this could put the garlic into an irregular growing cycle.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I planted garlic here in southern Australia a week ago as temperatures were consistently around at or below 20 degrees Celsius and then this week the temps rose back up to 27+. I’m hoping the heat doesn’t knock them out 🙏🏼🧄🧅

Oh my that's not ideal, but it happens. If you have a good layer of mulch around your garlic plants then that should have kept the soil cool enough to not cause issues but yes quite frustrating when the weather goes wonky 😂 Thanks for leaving a comment all the way from down under 🌻

Nice to at last see a channel from South Africa!! I do enjoy some of the overseas channels, but they are focused on their region.

Thanks so much and here's to hoping I can continue to provide local knowledge and content! I also follow a lot of international channels and have had to do lot's of testing to get the results I am after here in South Africa, so I am more than happy to share as I go along🌻

Thanks for sharing the knowledge! It's my first year growing garlic and they've almost all sprouted nicely. There's been so much rain and I haven't been consistent work my copper spraying because it's been difficult to find a gap between the rain but luckily there's no rust. My issue though is done leaves starting to brown and rot and finding millipedes eating them, while the rest of the plant looks good and strong. Do you have any tips to prevent that? I've just been manually removing them. Thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to leave me a comment and share your experiences! I am so glad you have managed to keep the rust on your garlic away because for me this is proving to be a real challenge with all the rain we are getting this year. I am probably going to end up with a pretty poor harvest, but that's okay - it's all part of it 😄 With regards to the rotting, I have personally found that garlic with wet winters should not have much mulch on top of the soil. I know the advice is to add lots of mulch (my advice too) but this year, with all the rains, it is not ideal as it increases moisture retention and promotes rot so that would be my No.1 recommendation right now. Remove the mulch to expose the soil so you can get the soil a little warmer and dryer. As for the millipedes, they can be a real challenge to get rid of and the most effective way (naturally) is with diatomaceous earth. It very effective against insects with exoskeletons, however, with all the rains it makes the diatomaceous earth completely useless. Neem oil is also not very effective with so much rain, so for now it is manual picking and when there are gaps in the rains (even for 1 day) put diatomaceous earth at the base of each plant to help with the battle. Hope this helps 🌻

How long does giant garlic take to sprout. I planted Spanish garlic and Giant garlic on the 24th of March. The Spanish garlic started sprouting last week. But looks like my giant garlic is still 'hibernating'😂 I am from Meyerton, Gauteng

I must say my Elephant Garlic is really testing my patience this year! Its 3 week's already and they still haven't broken ground 😂 I have dug down to see what's up and they have all sprouted out of the clove but not much growth beyond that. It could be a good thing though, because it's more than likely setting its roots and will explode with growth soon 🌻

Thank you! Good to know I am not the only one waiting for my Giant garlic to show up! My 40 days will be the first week in May.

Living Seeds also stress the importance of a 5 cm mulch on planting and a 10 cm mulch in spring. I am trying that as last year I failed miserably with garlic and think the soil got too warm.

Yes, that is 100% correct and I usually apply exactly those practices, however, this year I didn't mulch on planting to test if germination rates were faster, which they were, interestingly enough. When it comes to mulching I will also mention that the further north of South Africa you go the most the need for mulching upon planting due to frost and freezing temps. If you are not mulching and you are in these regions then you seriously risk inhibiting the growth of your garlic due to cold soil and the mulch will keep the soil temp warmer and more consistent. Where I am here in the Western Cape our winters are very mild. We almost never get frost or freezing nights so we have a lot more leniency when it comes to applying mulch on planting, however, I will be adding mulch now. The Spring planting is by far the most crucial and you correctly pointed out. If you do not have enough mulch here then your soil temp will rise too quickly and you won't get bulbs. The opposite applies to winter mulching where here we want to keep soil temps down, which is why a thicker layer is needed. I hope you have a CRACKING garlic harvest this year 🌻

@@MySustainabilityJourney I am in Somerset West. Really hoping for a great harvest! I have had a 100% germination rate so far. The giant garlic took a lot longer to come up. Thanks for your channel and all the info and God bless!
