A couple of years ago I let a Leek go to flower just to see what would happen and maybe gather some seed. I had no idea how popular that flower head would be with the 🐝 Oh wow, was it covered in insects 😯 Then I figured it was time to get in looking for seeds. And how many seeds did I get! Oh wow, I was not expecting that result 😮 I got excellent germination from those home saved seeds this year too 🥳

I use an onion for every pot of soup I make (and we eat a lot of soup!) -- When they sprout I just chop up the whole thing, onion and sprouted green top and saute in a bit of salt/oil...all tastes yummy in the end!

Last year I let my leeks go to seed just to see what would happen and to see what they looked like, they were beautiful just like your elephant garlic but a bit more purple, I paid £15 for two alliums and these overgrown leek seeds were just as lovely 🤣🤣

You can also put them on top of a cup of water with the bottom of the bulb slightly toughing the water and produce spring onions in your kitchen window sill.

I've never bought onions sets or seeds, I regrow them from the bottom of onions or spring onions we have eaten.... My spring onions have been growing for 6 years now.

I just cut an old onion flower head down and noticed some seedlings sprouting in the flower head itself. Well I’ve now removed 50 ready-rooting onion seedlings. It had fallen over so I can only assume the rain and soil kept it well watered but I was stunned! All played up in trays now 😂

Before u plant it, separate each sprout INSIDE the onion. Each sprout will turn into an onion. 😊😊👍👍

Try eating the young greens. Slice them up for salads or cooking. They are mild and packed with nutrition. In fact, I made a soup with lots of them and my blood pressure dropped as well contributed to regularity.

A little off topic, but I simply adore and am absolutely green with envy with folks who can live in the English countryside... So quiet, peaceful, tidy, lovely landscape, etc. Have never found what I consider the equivalent here in the USA. I'd move to the UK in a heartbeat to live like this... Parts of Ireland too.

You apparently haven't been looking in the right places. There are a lot of spots in the U.S. that are comparable to the English countryside. I've found such areas in New England, farther down the East coast in places such as Virginia and North and South Carolina, as well as in the Midwest. Nice small towns and villages, friendly people, farming communities, tidy with green landscapes and forests. I'm sure there's somewhere similar in just about every state.

Lots of spots in Canadian countryside as well ... but you have to be crafty - the areas close to the Michigan border are warmer than Detroit and if you are willing to water things yourself once in a while you can grow just about anything even most common fruit...

I have a sprouted yellow onion sitting on top of my fridge. I think I bought it last fall. I guess I’ll pot it up and put it on my patio, now that the weather is getting ready to warm up.

Even if the bulbs have gone mushy , you can always harvest the greenery.... it still tastes of onion.....ever tried carrot tops.... chopped up fine...... man their fiery...... and the best bit of a cauliflower is the bit that they discard.....the greenery.....

The seeds produced by "rescuing" sprouting onions can not only be used for next year's crop, but also for onion sprouts and microgreens; both healthy and delicious. After shaking out the seeds, the dried flowers can also be used in dried flower arrangements.

I sometimes cut up the clump within the one sprouted onion and plant each shoot like an onion plant. At the earliest moment I identify it I cut off the starting flower stem so it produces an onion bulb for me. You just take out the vestige of the stem and its a good food onion again.

I planted a shallot that sprouted because I just could not bear to toss it. Every time I look at it, I feel silly but it seem to be growing. Glad to know I’m not delusional!

Just my husband and I and he doesn’t like onions…when our sons where still at home nothing got wasted because they were natural garbage disposals😂 Now I’m lucky if I get through 1 onion every couple of weeks before I start crying over wasted food. Now I know I won’t waste anymore as I can plant them for the flowers that we both will enjoy😊 Lovely video!

I planted leeks several years ago and left it in my garden. The next years they produced beautiful flowers. I collected many hundreds of seeds. I had to dig them up because wasps were very attracted to them. I can’t get stung because I’m allergic! I’m going to try growing them again and harvest them to cook. I cannot let them produce seeds.

I do the same, I love my, what we call “Wallawalla sweets”. They are from Eastern Washington, just east of where we live. I go in to the store and buy them around November, and let they start showing green, and plant. Happy gardening Liz.

All sprouting veg are called: Planted food for future. Potatoes, onions, turnips, etc. (Particularly if you know to collect seeds and set them where needed.)

An excellent video! We usually save any we have that have gone green, then chop them up for their greens and use them on pizza. My roomie doesn't like the texture of onion bulbs, but onion greens are one of his favorite pizza toppings.

@@alliekingsley7919 i had the same response with children not liking onion texture. In dishes where onion was integral to the flavour of the dish i would grate the onions in. That way they are almost completely melted to nothing when cooked.

Hi Liz, bear in mind that most store bought onions may be imported from a warmer climate. They may be short season onions and not produce suitable seed for long season onions growing areas. If so they will produce very small onions maybe suitable for spring onions but not large bulbs for storage.

Interesting, I seen videos where you peel back each bulb individually and plant, this way obviously seems easier.... I'll have to try both ways to see for myself onion I have isn't even really rotten yet has almost 12" sprouts coming out of it. 2 stalks, 13 sprouts

If you are just bunging in your veg peelings then it's not a problem, but if you were adding masses of onions, it does something funny to the pH and/or can kill the soil life like worms and micro organisms.

Weird, can't remember where saw but they said to cover onion to below sprout point. I finally planted some & doing well, knock on wood. I have 2-3 more to plant. I need to dehydrate some before they sprout. :/

I live in Wisconsin - we are currently experiencing negative degree temperatures. So, planting them outside is probably not possible. Can I grow them indoors in parts or save them in the refrigerator? All suggestions appreciated

I can't remember either Mike, but I know that the bulbs divide inside their outer layers, so when you open them up there are two or three sections rather than one.

I plant sprouted onions every spring from my previous fall harvest when they are around a foot tall i harvest them separate them out clean them up for green onions. Plant them farley deap for a long white green onion
