Planted Tank Maintenance | Suppressing Algae!

Hello everyone! Long time no see!
This is a video showing you how I maintain my aquariums and deal with algae. Dealing with algae is much simpler than it sounds. It can be very discouraging. The simple answer is water changes. Lots of them! Just don't give it a chance to get out of control.Dim your lights a bit. Keep them on for a shorter period of time. Things that that help a lot!
Tank is a 20G High 24x12x16" ( Inches )
Dirt is Earthgro ( Home Depot ) 3$
Sand is HTH Pool Filter Sand from Ace Hardware 12$
Lights are on this tank for 8hrs a day.
Tank temp 77-78 Degrees F.

Your black phantoms seem so relaxed and comfortable. They look great. I had a shoal of 9 of them in one of my planted tanks a few years ago and they mostly just hid away, despite the tank being heavily planted and having ample shade from surface plants.

I'm not to big a fan of red plants at the moment. It seems to make the tank feel less natural. Even in nature you don't see bright right plants very often. But Thank you!✌🙂

Awesome vid mate!! So big water changes are ok in the suppression of algae? Would dosing excel remove the brown algae? I’m currently having a small out break with what I believe to be staghorn, but have started dosing with excel and have noticed the staghorn is slowly but surely withering away. Now if I do a massive water change am I going to change the effectiveness of the excel in killing the staghorn?

Seachem excel will get rid of all types of algae except for blue green algae. It's really amazing stuff. But be careful with it. I dont recommend dosing more than twice the recommended amount. Spot dosing works really well too! Just make sure all flow is turned off. 🙏🙂

Oh and big water changes are always okay as long as the water you add is chlorinated before it goes into that tank. That's just a misconception

@@farbodgh7247 They will. Their mouths are big enough to fit half of an adults body in it. I've seen this personally. I've even seen some of my black neon tetras eat adults. ✌😅

New to aquarium hobby! Can someone HELPPPPPP ME. I have a 20g with plants and I recently started getting a ton of bubbles at the top ( I just fed them yesterday so I get that the bubbles are protein or something like that but there’s TOO MANY bubbles it’s ridiculous) my filter is whisper so there isn’t much movement at the surface. What seems to be the problem? I was told to put carbon in my tank but google is saying otherwise. Is carbon okay with a planted aquarium? I use fertilizer tabs and liquid fertilizer as well.

Does the surface skimmer really make a difference ? Never used one

It just keeps that surface scum off the top of the water and adds a bit more flow. that's literally it though haha Well it helps with aeration too

Works immediately and makes a world of a different. Downside is that it clogs up really really quickly. I have to clean the sponge once a week to week and a half.

What cheap light that you would recommend that is considered CO2 enabled?

Well I mean you can inject co2 into any tank light doesnt really matter all that much. Like you can inject co2 in a low light anubias only tank and still get incredible results. Just I would say if we are talking super cheap go with nicrew!

A question for someone anyone please, I just got some plants that were delayed in shipping and they took a little beating but look like they might survive, so do i plant them right away or maybe just let them float for a bit.

I'd say if they're stem plants, let them float in the tank as they acclimate to your water. a lot of people recommend floating new plants. Best of luck

Any idea what causes the dwarf sag to die back like that? Just old leaves? Mine seems to do it every few months. Nice transformation - tank looks great post-maintenance. See ya on the gram! - jdp_aqua

I'm really not sure. It just seems to do whatever it wants sometimes. Sometimes it'll be growing really strong and then out of no where it just starts to melt for no reason. It bugs me because I've never figured it out. Just a weird plant I think 🤷‍♂️✌😅

Unfortunately I had a disease go around my tanks that took them out. I was pretty upset about it because they were much more pets to me than just fish like tetras. So I haven't went to get another one since. Although I really want another one. They are just so personable.
