I live in northern California, l grabbed a couple dianthus from lowes discount shelf these plants withstood our brutal heatwave in full sun ,weeks of frost and now tons of rain and they still look great will be planting more this spring.

Oh my goodness, it was definitely a long hot summer. The dianthus border did well during that time. I thought the rain might do them in. However they're still alive. Once the sun comes out, they should begin blooming. I already have iris blooming. :)

Those are actually ruby slipper coleus. Aren’t they beautiful?! Going to try and see if they come back next spring. When they begin to look tired, I’ll prune them back. 😃

Very pretty👍🏾👏🏾 I have dianthus my growing zone is 6b (NJ) but my dianthus don't look like that... mine have more of a blue/green needle point type of leaves and they bloom late spring a beautiful dark red carnation looking flowers with a lovely clove sent. As far as the pink snapdragon if I can make a suggestion as soon as any of the birds dry up collect the seeds because that is a special flower right there it has gone against the grade and pushed to be different!!! Which it needs to be propagated and planted in mass in your lovely garden. I always enjoy watching your videos!!!!

Thank you so much. I thought the same about the pink snapdragon. 😊

I’m wondering if you are referring to perennial dianthus. I have some pink Firewitch dianthus that bloom late spring. I’ve never used the annuals but am considering using them in full sun areas in my zone 6b in Canada

So pretty! You've inspired me to plant some dianthus in my garden. Last spring, was my first time being a gardener and my dianthus didn't do, well, at all, but since I'm alot better, maybe I'll try again. I'm going to search through your channel to see if you did any updates. Thanks for sharing.

Check out the mini March tour. I need to learn how to link those. 🤣 They have performed very well. I just cut them back this week. They look much fuller and have so much new growth. Thank you for watching. 😊

How are you dianthus doing? I live in zone 9b, Bakersfield. I didn’t know dianthus is for our cooler months, I just picked them up at a local nursery. I’m glad I found your video before planting them, hopefully I can return them for a heat loving flowers.
@birdhousegarden2 жыл бұрын
I recently cut them back a few weeks ago. They were looking a bit leggy. As I was cutting them back I could see new growth. Because they face south, I look for them stop blooming when our temp get into the 100's. We've had a few days of 90 degrees. So far, so good. :)

Could you tell me which variety of dianthus you planted. I LOVE how this looks and all your flowerbeds are just stunning and well planned out.
@birdhousegarden7 ай бұрын
Thank you.😊 I’m sorry to say I don’t know what variety. I purchased them at Home Depot and they were in the small 3” containers. I hope that helps. I see them there every Spring. On the side of the container it read ‘dianthus’

Great job! I love those dianthus...and blooming in the winter...wow. I live in Virginia Beach 8a, maybe they don't sell that type here. Do you get cold winters? On the coast here it gets cold (not greatly), but it is humid. All they sell here is pansies and snapdragons. We don't get to see too much of your front beds, they look great!!! P.S. I still don't see how you get away without using mulch and have no weeds?! What kind of magic soil is that?! 😂
@birdhousegarden3 жыл бұрын
No magic soil. 😂 I sometimes want to show that I do get weeds. However, I get nervous that people wouldn’t want to see that. We had to clean up some clover 🍀 and alyssum that had self seeded before filming. I was thinking of showing y’all a fall update on the front flowerbeds. Our winters are relatively mild. Mostly 50’s, some 40’s, and occasionally 30’s (overnight). Thank you so much for watching. 😊

I've had Dianthus and they came back year after year until this yr. Think they got a bit dry, we didn't mulch.

How often do you water them ❤
@birdhousegarden9 ай бұрын
During summer they are watered daily. We live in a hot & dry climate. Throughout the rest of the year, approximately 3 times a week unless it’s been raining. If we receive a lot of rain and it’s cooler, I’ll go a few weeks between watering. 😊
