Planting a Gigantic Agave!

I look forward to planting my large agave Americana ‘mediopicta aurea,’ aka century plant every year. It brings me so much joy! With pointed ends, it can be a bit tricky to plant. But once in the urn, it's the best statement piece and really what started my love for all agave.⁠

To provide a bit of interest, I plant a few trailing annuals under all my agave:⁠
⁠
- Lemon Coral sedum ⁠
- Silver Mist helichrysum⁠
⁠
These two annuals really accentuate the agave and balance out the colors and size. I pick agave for their drought tolerance and ability to withstand Iowa’s extreme conditions. And these two annuals do the same!⁠

Mine is producing pups from its well developed root system- should make for great undergrowth.

Hi just a hint. Those agaves are common in the south west. You can clip the needles on the ends to help them be more safe. Don’t clip too short to cause the left die but rather just enough to dull the point.

Also your agave is getting fairly large. In the next year or two I believe it will send up a stalk. Once it does that the agave will die. However it will have new pups that you can grow into many more plants.
