How to care for an agave plant and help it grow huge!

This is a Century Plant, also known as Agave Americana, growing in Texas in the Austin area. Since my plant has grown to be over eight feet tall, I decided to share my care tips here. Summary: Cut off lower leaves when on the ground, dig up the pups, and be careful around it.

I am located in Lake Charles, LA almost to the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in southern Louisiana. In our yard we've had these Agave Americana grow to enormous proportions like yours here. After they've gotten this big, they'll generally put out a large stalk with flowers about 15' tall! That's also usually their "swan song", as they will wither and die. But, they'll generate at least 3 or 4 "pups" or offsets to leave as a legacy!

I’m trying to grow agave Americana from seed. How long did you wait until you saw the flowers? Side note: did you watch these from pup stage or were they already established? From my research agave Americana only blooms once in the plants life cycle and then dies. The blooms can take anywhere from 15-50 years to occur.

Was one that size when I moved here. (Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca in Mexico) My mother killed it then she moved back here a few months ago, and I was talking about planting one in my part of the yard (multiple houses), because that one had been so impressive and there are a few small ones out on the sidewalk in front of our property. She didn't even remember killing it and felt dumb for removing it.

A well sharpened shovel does a better work and it's easier on you. One move and the leaves just come off cleanly. Believe me, I just trimmed like close to 60 of them at my work.

Thanks for sharing! I'm in the midst of a love/hate relationship with Mom's Agave. Lol. Love them because they're easy to start, will grow anywhere, and one "bloomed" 17yrs after planting. The only down side is not culling the pups allowing the Agave to bunch, which made it difficult to maintain. I talk to much. Prayers to ya'll over yonder from West Texas!!

Depends on where you live. If it rains frequently not to worry but it does need semi-regular watering as it's not a fully desert plant. It has pulp in the leaves so it does need water.

In addition to his clothing and eye precautions, I would recommend using a hand-powered telescoping saw (typically used to trim small tree branches) to avoid having to climb below the plant when pruning. While beautiful, Century plants are very dangerous when the leaf sap comes in contact with bare skin or eyes (I'm recovering from a painful rash on my calf at the time of this posting from merely brushing against a trimmed leaf). Im from Austin tx. We have 3 big magueyes (agave). And I just used a kitchen knife and it worked just fine. Didn't use glasses or gloves. I regret not using gloves though ha. And to take the baby agaves (hijuelos) all I did was wet the ground and they piped right off. Never seen your method. But I'll give it a try.

BetoP I'm also in Austin. If a kitchen knife works, that's cool. It's basically a mini saw, right? Since this plant is so big now, the saw is very fast at getting through thick leaves. I dig up the pups so I can replant them. Otherwise I would just cut them off and toss them away.

This is beautiful. I have two agaves that were haphazardly dug out of a construction site with am excavator. They've seen a lot of abuse. I planted them a year ago, 1 is ok. The other is not doing well. All but 1 stalk are drooping on the ground and maimed. Is there anything I can do for this? Also, after you cut off the bad bottom stalks should I put anything on the wound?

They're pretty hearty. Just trim off the dying stuff. It will promote new growth.

I honestly don't know. If you haven't seen any used in local landscaping, they may not be suited to the climate. You can try though.

Freeze damages and can kill it but it's pretty hearty. It's an Agave Americana, also called a Century Plant.

The Jimadors, take an edger and sharpen it up with a diamond file, and use it to chop the leaves off without having to get down or near the plant or its juice i think the other tool they use looks like a heavy duty pizza cutter on a stick.

Are you familiar with the agave (Caribbean) that is the name on the marker, but no other info was provided. I purchased from Lowe's, I bought 7 of them, they are about gallon size. I want to put them in the front side (faces west) and the sun is brutal. The other side of the house faces south ( not as brutal). We live in Atlanta GA ! I have purchased sand, sphagnum soil and perlite to mix to plant in the ground. If you can offer any additional suggestions, greatly appreciate!

I'm in central FL where we get brutal heat sometimes as well, and my Caribbean agave is in my front yard facing west with shade from house/treeline in later afternoon. Loves it! Agaves seem to do well no matter the type of soil, as long as water doesn't routinely pool up and give it root-rot it should be fine!

I don't know. Sounds like how mine have gotten if they freeze in the winter. Not much you can do. Trim off the ugly parts and hope it recovers.

Yes, I routinely snip off the needle-like lances at the end of the leaves, at least the ones facing anywhere I am to be. The plants have suffered no ills due to doing so.

So how do I take care of it in the desert do I water it how much ? Is too much water bad I am usually away for about a month at a time will the blue agave survive the summer heat without being watered and how much water does it need I had a palm tree I planted in the summer heat I watered it every day for about a week made a puddle around it then left for a month to return to a pretty much dead palm tree maybe I over watered it? It was expensive so I also kinda died inside

I would treat this like the blue agave. It doesn't need much water. It should be fine. It's a desert plant.

@@rmu2867 awesome thanks for the quick reply I just planted an agave and a palm tree today I watered them with plenty of water and I will leave them alone till maybe a month later and water them then I also fed them with the I forget the name but it's a dropper thing I gave them 4 drops it's pretty cold in california so I hope that helps I still do wonder if I killed my palm tree do to over watering 5 out of seven days when it was 115% outside or maybe I didn't water enough ? I guess I'll find out this time around lol

I have one in a pot inside my house! It's huge now but started out super tiny. I've had it for about eight years and don't know what to do with it. Warn about Black Beatles and Infection. Several infections can also plague agave plants with symptoms including lesions, black and brown spots and rot. Agave infections include Anthracnose, root and crown rot and Phyllosticta pad spot. These infections are caused by fungus spores that find a home on the agave plants. I lost 4 large plants this past summer. The plant will look fine, and then just collapse.

No. Only new leaves grow out of the center. If you cut the whole plant at the base, it might sprout pups but l doubt it will grow back at the main plant.

I had certain leaves at the middle to top of the plant which were dead so I cut them clóse like you did to the bottom leaves which were touching the ground. I was going to cut just the tips, but I cut clóser to inside. I tried wiggle each of the dead leaves off, but I couldn't so I cut clóser to the inner as posible. It looks unpleasant but hoping it spring back out.

The PURPOSE?? Sculptural beauty is enough reason for me. And, they are great by/under windows. You can leave those windows open at night without fear of someone 'mistakenly' crawling in! Think of them as a static burgeralar alarm! Or burgeralar bars! Very, very pretty burgeralar bars!!! And, a long handled, tree pruner saw works great to trim this plant. No need to get close to it that way.

Look @ a video where mexican farmers cut the agave. Long wood stick with a flat filed edge to trim off the leaves without risking going under like that. Fersure use gloves and goggles. And he smashed the pup trying to cut it out, better ways to do this. The agave looks clean tho.

I have 3 plants that are in small wood wine barrel type pots, the weather has been in the 100's for couple weeks and looks to stay this hot for awhile, the plants are looking bad and I know they are not over watered as I water them maybe every 4-5 days, could being in small pots..maybe 10 inches deep and 20 inches round be causing problems with there roots ? should they be planted in the ground to keep roots cooler ??????????? Any ideas ?

Tim Wasson I've never had that problem but I think planting in the ground would be a good idea. just watch the spikes. It's easy to get cut when transplanting. Also watch you're back (meaning posture and lifting). Evan at barrel size agaves are surprisingly heavy.

I think you could water them even less. I've had pups in pots for months only getting some water when it rains and they are doing great. It could just be that the climate in Austin is perfect for them.

Grow about 1,000 more, just like it. Then tap them like maple trees for the agave nectar, ferment, and age. This thought is how *I* got started growing em!

As long as it's warm out (overnight too, especially), and sunny, you can water the LIVING HELL out of them, once they get growing nicely. Use an equal parts mixture of soil/perlite (or small ground pumice better yet)/sand in a well draining pot.
