That tree was a fantastic deal!!There used to be a Japanese maple nursery about 15 minutes from my house. I bought a small tree about the size of yours, and it cost $300! That was 12 years ago. The tree is doing great and has grown a ton. It is beautiful and one of my favorite plants in my landscape.

(Ta - moo - key - yamma) is how it's pronounced. One of the very best and most classic and durable of the Japanese weeping lace leaf maples. Great choice!

That tree looks great in that pot. I have one and had to replant this morning it because it wasnt doing well. I think leaf scortch, but it's my first time every having a garden, so Im learning little by little. I can't get enough of these Japanese maples though. I just want mine to do good. Looks beautiful. I do it slightly different. I use pot in pot. I take the plant with the black plastic pot and drop it in. As it grows I move up the pot size. I just find it difficult to upsize when the tree has been in the pot for years and the sides of the pot taper inward at the top. It doesn’t look as pretty as yours though.

FarMoore HomeStead hi thanks for checking out my channel. It is a tree it is just a slow grower so it hangs out in the bush size bracket for many years before it finally gets big.

Hello, I just got a red maple today and found this video really helpful. Before I put mine in my pot I just had a few questions for you, 1. is that just regular potting soil? Such as for flowers? and 2. I read it was good to mix compost into the pot? Thoughts? Thank you!
@HorticultureGeek
@HorticultureGeek 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is potting soil. And yes, you need a good container/potting soil. Mixing in some compost is a good idea because you need to feed the tree. I also really like Espoma Biotone and would recommend putting that in the soil as well to give the roots a boost.

I am going to do this - I have a pot (same type) and color - love this idea - will it winter ok outside? - I am in Ohio.

Hi Brent. I would consult your local garden center to see if they recommend leaving potted trees outside in your winter. Here in Arkansas our winters are so mild we don’t have any issues with it.

What are the names of the potting soil you used?
@HorticultureGeek
@HorticultureGeek Жыл бұрын
That is the members mark potting soil from Sam’s club. But I’m not picky for a certain brand. I also use several other brands as long as it it a good potting soil for containers and will allow for good drainage. Hope that helps.

How do you over winter it
@HorticultureGeek
@HorticultureGeek 11 күн бұрын
Yes it stays out in the yard in its container at all times. This particular variety can handle my winter temps. If we ever get an abnormally cold spell I throw a sheet or blanket over it.

Beautiful tree... wondering why Japanese Maple trees are so darn expensive... I want one but I hate the price, maybe one day I'll bite the bullet and invest in a refundable/returnable Japanese Maple tree soon.
@MBihon2000
@MBihon2000 4 жыл бұрын
Felecia Wallace they are so expensive because they grow so slow and very sensitive to cold, wind or too much heat. It should be planted close to your house or something to hide from extreme exposure to wind, cold or heat.

I spent $140 on mine and it's dying lol. I moved it today so I'm hoping the shock doesnt kill it, but it would have died if I didnt, so time will tell. I love it (well images of it when it was healthy lol) I got the Ice Dragon variant. Its too expensive to die on me!

will the maple survive a Zone 7 winter if left outdoors? Thanks Joe
@HorticultureGeek
@HorticultureGeek 3 жыл бұрын
It should. The trick is to pick a plant 2 zones lower that your zone to survive in a pot. Most Japanese Maples (including this one) are hardy to zone 5 so it is 2 lower than 7 and should survive just fine.

I have had great success with this potting soil so far. The tree is doing wonderful. However if someone is using a potting soil that is too thick and not well draining I agree that would not be ideal. At that point adding things like perlite or fine bark nuggets would help to lighten the soil and allow for better drainage. Thanks for watching and commenting.
