hello, could you show us the evolution of your vanilla orchid please
@OrchidSpecies11 жыл бұрын
Yes, taking cuttings is dead easy. Just take a side shoot (or top of main stem) making sure the bit you're taking has some roots and plant it up in the same way as shown. If it's a short bit you don't need to train it yet, wait until it's growing away and then pot it up as per the video. Not sure what you mean by train like a Phalaenopsis? Compost for this is 8 parts normal potting compost / 2 parts fine orchid bark

This is the best video I have seen so far, on growing a vanilla bean orchid on a moss pole. Have you seen any flowers yet. Also do you have a mini green house for your orchids in the winter in the UK?

Thanks for the video... a month ago purchased some clippings and they had no roots then purchased some Orchid potting soil and planted them in a pot...my question is how long will it take for the roots to grow in?

You said they like it kind of shady. Are we talking 50-75percent shade- cattleya light (unifoliate species) or more like vanda light 50-25 percent shade? Also what temp range and what humidity? Thanks.
@llmcbee18758 жыл бұрын
I don't think they're that fussy. I've had mine sitting in a ziploc bag in a shady place in my grow room for a year, and it is 10-15 times bigger than when I got it. I pretty much just checked the plant now & then, and if it seemed like it was wilting a bit, moved it until I found a spot that it liked. Great thing is, it's very forgiving; due to family illness I even forgot to water it several times, and all the damage would be contained to one leaf, which fell off while the rest of the plant kept right on growing. BTW, it's still in the same two inch pot it came in, though it's now over a foot tall! (It was about a two inch plant with two leaves to start with.) I stopped by here today to find out how to finally repot it.
@missanna2088028 жыл бұрын
well I guess it depends on the species too. There are some leafless species that I believe need more light than some of the other types, but I know some can grow on understory trees, if I'm not mistaken, so I guess maybe oncidium to cattleya light. Also, in my college greenhouse, there are some planifolia-or at least there were some years ago. They would grow above the shadecloth and burn, but stressing apparently helps them bloom. Ive even heard of growers burning them with cigarettes(which maybe accounts for why so many had virus).
@llmcbee18758 жыл бұрын
missanna208802 Mmm. Well I don't know about any of that. If going without water as long as mine did at times didn't cause it stress, I don't know what would, and it has never flowered. Of course it's only about 18 inches high-it was about an inch and a half when I got it. I thought I saw somewhere it took a few years for them to bloom. I still haven't repotted it, and it's still going well. It lost the top leaf, which worried me because I thought it might stop the growth of the vine, but it just put out a side shoot which is growing gangbusters. When you consider I've never done more than water-the only time it ever got even CLOSE to being fertilized was when I watered it with some of my hydroponic solution, LOL-it's a really amazing little plant. As to lighting, all I use indoors are 1600 lumen daylight CFL's, and they have worked fine for anything I've ever grown. Got this info from Praxxus' channel a few years back, and they work great. I'm disabled, so my set ups have to be really simple and easy to deal with. I can't really get too fussy-and at my age, I wouldn't even if I could, LOL. But I'm growing most things I want to-the only real trouble I have is over-watering things, mostly. :-)
@missanna2088028 жыл бұрын
Yes I've seen oraxxus's vanilla vine as well. And yeah, they won't flower at 18" I think 4-6 feet is the minimum size they will flower. When it gets to 6' if it won't flower, it's probably not got enough light. Praxus' voodoo garden is quite something, but I doubt he's got enough light to flower it...it takes far more light to flower things than it does to grow them vegetatively. Think of growing vandas in flasks under shop lights, pot veg cycle uses less light, etc, but when you're wanting things to bloom, they need much higher light since it takes so much energy for flowering. On that subject- if you go over to indoor orchids and tropicals, you can see my setup and the flowers I'm getting. My pink maxima video shows the huge difference between growing under t5ho and led. Also, you said you're disabled...I've got chronic back pain for 13 years now and I came up with a really easy watering system. I don't know what your setup is like or how much money you have to spend, or how much you can lift...if you can lift a gallon and can do a little bit of easy drilling, it should work for you. I'll make a video of my watering system for you. Before I had it and my setup, I couldn't take care of my plants consistently, but I figured out and easier setup that now allows me to water everything pretty easily. If you're in a wheelchair or something, it may not work, but maybe you'll get some useful ideas :) I've been growing orchids for 10+ years and I see people where I was then and I wish I had known what I know now, so I decided to make an orchid channel to help other people. Astrid just got the same setup I had back then and I feel so bad for her. She's going to have the challenges I had with that system. I wish I could have told her sooner. Anyway, my system allows me to water in-place and I just dump the drain water down the toilet. My grow area has evolved over the years and I've overcome a lot of the things that makes indoor growing hard. I'd love to see your setup and know more about your orchids and please let me know if you have any questions. When caring for plants is a lot of work, it takes out some of the enjoyment. Best wishes.

missanna208802 Oh lord no, I don't grow orchids. I still manage to kill off a mint now & then: I sure don't want to insult such beautiful plants with my lack of expertise, LOL. No the vanilla was a food plant, which is how it came to be included in my somewhat eclectic collection. Right now the extent of my orchid-ing amounts to watching the vids of those who know what they're doing and drooling. ;-) I've only been growing seriously a few years, as something to help keep me more active, so I'm pretty new to most of it. I do a bit of hydroponics, and have a decent regular container grow room for things like figs, olives, and whatever other plant (usually medicinal or food) takes my fancy. I do have a decent array of some unusual things, thanks to good trades I've made with people around the world. I just received some Vietnamese coriander cuttings and some Aji Crystal seed in the mail the other day this way. I will definitely be checking out your channel: anything that can simplify things for me will be appreciated. If there's one thing I've learned about gardening it's that you're always learning, no matter how long you've been at it. I've had master gardeners of many years tell me this, so I'm always happy to learn from others. :-)

My vanilla orchid keeps having the aerial roots dry out, any suggestions?
@NMW803 жыл бұрын
Have you got your aerial roots on a moss pole? If so is that moist? I read you have to keep the pole moist too but I’m no expert. How is ya vanilla orchid going now it’s been a year?
@liquidgold27353 жыл бұрын
@@NMW80 the aerial roots apparently are just to grab on to things and dry if they don't touch anything. My vanilla is almost 5 feet long. Just wondering how to make it blossom now. I've read to burn a leaf or crack the terminal bud off.
@NMW803 жыл бұрын
@@liquidgold2735 ah ok, do you live in a warm location? Is yours inside?I wonder if it needs to have the correct light and warmth to flower 🤔
@liquidgold27353 жыл бұрын
@@NMW80 yes inside. So in nature they blossom when the vines reach the canopy and get sunburned. That's why people say to burn a leaf
@NMW803 жыл бұрын
@@liquidgold2735 ah ok I have heard and read they say to stress the plant out but now I know why they suggest to burn a leaf etc. Makes sense since the suns full light on it would possibly sun burn it. Do you try and put it outside in summer? I don’t know heaps about them yet cos I only just bought it today on a whim lol I wasn’t planning to but it was the last one and it’s only $25 so I thought yeah why not lol. It will have to live in doors most of the time due to the cold weather where I live. But summer time should be able to handle outside but I might just put it in my greenhouse and then the cold winter months bring inside. Do you just grow it near a window for light? I am wondering if I will have to use artificial light or just window indirect light.

Is there anyway I can attach phaelonopsis orchids to a moss pole? Sorry about the spelling, fighting with autocorrect😂 thank you .
@OrchidSpecies4 жыл бұрын
Yes they would love it. All you need to do is basically fasten the roots to the pole, the plant will though end up at an angle as this is just how they like it. You'd have to keep it well moist until it's got new roots to grab the moss. Maybe wrap the roots in cling film to hold moisture. Should do really well.

Ha ha. Bet I bought mine from you then! Got it on eBay about that time last year. It is still doing great in the original pot, but it's getting big, so time to repot. I actually watched this vid last year, but due to family illness, never got to do anything about it until now. The plant has been growing like a champ with almost no care at all--all I did was stick it in a ziploc bag, set in my grow room in a shady place, and water now & then. Even when I forgot to water, it bounced right back. I love this little plant: such a pretty, hardy little guy. I recommend anyone to grow it, and to buy from you! Thought I had subscribed last year, but it looks like I didn't, so I just took care of that. Thanks for the great advice on repotting. :-)

@@llmcbee1875 did you put the whole plant and pot in a zip lock bag? Is that to keep up humidity? I was going to make a mini greenhouse inside the house to hold humidity in too.
