Here in Hawaii non-varigated vanilla vines appear to be hardier than variegated & less sensitive to sun. In the wild they grow under the canopy of trees but thrive on bright filtered sun.

Do you have a place where viewers may ask for tips? My vanilla is having a hard time and I could use a few pointers. It came attached to a branch that I believe is rotting but there are 5+ cuttings attached deeply. I'm so frustrated. You are so knowledgeable, and I can't for the life of me find anything about my situation.

I remember in the past I told you to get a vanilla, I have it myself, but now. . . I've changed my mind, because it DOES NOT WANT to grow, it just withers little by little every week, and it won't grow, regardless of what I do, so yeah :P maybe you'll have luck with it, because certainly I did not. . . Hey Dani, lol, I just got a vanilla planifola variegata yeasterday from Wichmann. I was contemplating inorganic media as well. I purchased a 5 ltr bag of "special potting mix for vanilla", sort of like a terrestrial mix you used, from Wichmann which arrived yesterday as well. But now that I think about it, maybe I will pot it in inorganic media just to see the results and then we could compare notes. Let me know what you think😊.
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
+John G I have a concern with inorganic medium, it has a lot of air pockets. I think my Pleione in seramis would prefer soil really, I am not sure yet but I would just stick to soil like for the vanilla, she can be fussy. As it grows you can take a cutting maybe and try inorganic :)
@OrchidudeBcn8 жыл бұрын
+MissOrchidGirl ok, might be better to air on the side of caution then and do as you said later on with the cuttings. Thanks for the advice!😊

Hello @missorchidgirl, I just received a vanilla cutting stick ( it has no leaves). How will I know which end should be on top and which end goes into the medium?
@MissOrchidGirl3 жыл бұрын
Hi, just place it sideways, one of the nodes MAY decide to grow, it's not a given. I would however save up for a proper cutting in the future, orchids don't work like other popular plants, like aroids and such. So 'wet sticks' and such don't generally work with orchids, better to save up for a full plant!

This is so aggrovating! I have two cuttings with roots sitting in a glass of water waiting to be planted, but i cant because the kind of orchid medium they sell around here is purely for Phalaenopsis orchids! I dont know what to do!
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
Hi, no worries there is no such thing as Phalaenopsis medium, it's just marketing :) we grow orchids in different media depending on our environment and even pots. So what you need for a Vanilla is something well draining, a bit airy and water retentive, such as a combination of bark and a bit of peat moss, or bark and moss. I have a funny feeling that Phalaenopsis mix is a blend of bark and peat moss, horrible for Phals but very good for vanillas, I would buy a bag and see what it is, you might be lucky ;)
@TheLazysketcher8 жыл бұрын
MissOrchidGirl I know what the medium is like, ive used it several times due to it being the only real orchid medium around. It consists of bark, tiny sphagnum parts and some finer material which might be peat. But its VERY light, i dont know how vanilla would do in this kind of medium, it might be too airy.

Hi Joyce, I had some issues with terrestrials in seramis, as Vanilla has a terrestrial part I am not sure if it will do ok. If you have multiple cuttings you can try one in seramis and the rest in traditional, I am curious to see if it works too :)
@Melelinaioke8 жыл бұрын
I have 2 fairly small cuttings that are planted in small plastic baskets with moss. it's also colder now where I live and less sunlight so I'm not sure if seramis will make them too cold

Why don't you just lay the whole cutting down on the medium surface so each ariel root can grow into the soil, this will minimise the possibility of rotting and give more rooting options
