Let me know what ya'll think of this video! I am especially interested to hear your tips and tricks for warding off rabbits. I also wanted to mention in the spirit of full disclosure: I wasn't paid or sponsored by Raintree Nursery for this video, it just happens to be where I ordered my plants from.

Trap and eat them?

Hi, enjoyed the video. I've heard it is NOT good to add compost when planting as the plants will tend to settle too low as the compost breaks down. Maybe better to put a layer on top, after planting, and then cover with mulch?

Try a few layers of rolled up chicken wire around your plants and use those U shaped metal stakes to secure to the ground to keep the rabbits out. Using a couple layers will allow you to offset the holes in the chicken wire enough so baby rabbits won't be able to get in through the holes either. You can make them as tall as you want and they let the trunks of trees "breath" unlike those plastic protectors. Just keep them big enough around so they're not scraping up the plants or trunks of trees.

@@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane That's pretty much what I ended up doing, though I just used sticks from around the yard because I didn't want to buy any stakes. Definitely was the way to go!

Thanks for the video. A friend is giving me two of these and I wanted to see the best way to plant them. I'd like to see how yours have grown up to now.

Thanks for watching! I posted an update a few weeks ago, so check it out here kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3jbdH9jZb50eLM. Most of the plants are are a little over a couple feet tall now, but they haven't flowered yet. A mature plant is considered 3 years old, so maybe next year they will flower for the first time . I am going to try to do a few garden updates this year and I am due for another one soon.

The used wheelbarrow market is saturated with buyers in my area... no bullshit... I've been looking for a free/cheap old one for a while. I already have one, but it's so old that it is starting to get too old for me to use it.

Who knew? I still haven't put new handles on that free one I found. It really needs it, it might not even be functional this year!

Haha poor wheel! At least you got a new one.
@HacknBuild6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, lucky find! I still might repair that dump cart. It is kind of nice for hauling soil because it's lower to the ground and easy to get in with a shovel. The wheel barrow is going to be really nice for hauling general yard waste where I need it.

Any update for this year I am just about to do this to my garden. I would love to see yours a year on!

The plants are doing fine this year. All but one came back. That plant was destroyed by rabbits, so my plant protector idea didn't work :) They were too short and the rabbits just climbed up on top. I made some larger protectors. I think it will be a couple more years before I am able to harvest anything. Thanks for watching, cheers!

How did it turn out? I love this tree but I wasn't able to care for them (potted) after 2 years and they died after giving me a crop, looking forward to seeing how yours turn out

It's a work in progress. I posted some updates on KZbin about the project recently. A few of the bushes are pretty well established. I also added some apple trees which I grew from seed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5rRo3SrgNt4b8k kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3a0l6egqMukadk

Those look like Saskatoon berries! Ah, I see they go by many names across North America! The word Saskatoon comes from the Cree language, and I live in a city named Saskatoon, after the berries!

I am trying to make a sort of British style ancient hedge. They used these in the past as fences with hedgelaying, which is an almost dead art. So I have been looking for different plants that can just be cut and inserted into the ground to make roots. So far I have willow, currants, and elderberry. I have more work to do, though.

It's a whole process laying a hedge like that. Interested in seeing how it comes together!

Put out some food for the rabbits and they won't eat your plants. They'll happily eat bird seed - without corn. They like milo, millet and sunflower seeds. You can also just plant some stuff they'd rather have like lettuce, etc. I have several wild rabbits that hang out at my place and I set aside a little 5x5 patch for them where I grow leafy greens and have a small shelter with a bowl of bird seed in it. That's where they hang out. They don't bother the rest of my garden. Learn to work with nature and stop being so selfish. We need wildlife.

Since I planted the hedge, I had a neighbor move in who has a few cats. I haven't seen as many of the rabbits around since then. Still need the protectors to prevent deer browse. Even though I am in an urban setting, we get deer coming though on a pretty regular basis.

If keep food for rabbits, don't you think rats will come too? I have chickens and now rats are here.
