Crocosmia bulbs love to multiply if they're happy and hardy in your area. Ours are, and we need to thin them out so we can transplant them into a larger container. And, we have a new crocosmia bulb to plant, too. Watch as we separate and thin out lots of crocosmia and more in this video!
Make sure to leave your comments and questions below, and thank you for watching! 😉

I love Crocosmia...and wish I had planted them in pots. They spread and are persistent for YEARS. Plant carefully where you want them forever.

We love them too, and for sure, they will spread if they really like where they are living. Thank you for watching and hope you found it useful! 👍👍😉😊

Happy to find your channel. I haven’t seen much (if any) KZbin gardening content from the PNW. I’m here in University Place near Tacoma. Your content seems to be a better fit, so I’m happy to subscribe. I’m more of an aspirational than an actual gardener. My “garden” area is mostly container pots on the patio. I do have a rock wall that I hope to improve, so will be looking for some ideas. Thanks for the great content!

Thanks for sharing this video. My Fire King crocosmia have taken over my landscape. I will have to thin them out drastically. Can I do this in the fall?

When is the best time to dig up and separate? I've had one for years and it's gotten so large and this year it isn't doing so great. I hardly have any new growth conning up.

Hi there! Thank you for watching our video and for asking your questions. Many crocosmia sold commercially are generally hardy down to zone 6 (USDA zoning). This is for general gardening and planting in the ground or a raised bed. Best practice for planting any plant in a container, for hardiness, is to think of your garden's zone and then go one zone lower for hardiness for that plant in that container. So, if you are gardening in Zone 6, then you should think of all your container plants growing in Zone 5, because being in a container their roots are exposed more to any extreme cold temperatures than if they were planted in the ground (with more soil to insulate them). This applies for all plants grown in containers, whether crocosmia, hosta's, or coral bells. In general, most commercially sold crocosmia won't be hardy enough to grow in containers where you garden, unless you bring them inside and protect them from extreme cold over your winters. Make sure to check any specific packaging for your crocosmia as not all plants are created equal when hardiness is concerned and there cold be some locally sold that could be hardy below zone 6 that you could grow in containers. Check with your local nurseries and even extension agencies to see if any are hardy and available. Hope that helps and thank you again for watching!

I always see these videos and photos of nice, erect crocosmia plants. Mine are erect when they come up but will lay over when they start to bloom. Do you think they are packed in too tightly? They have been growing in the same spot for a decade now and I have never thinned them out. They completely encircle a bush and have crept down the entire backside of my house. I have the tall Lucifer variety.
