Dear Deuxcheveux, thank you for your comment. You have no idea how grateful I am. I love elephant ears. I have been planting our elephant ears that are left over at the end of the season. Some make it, some don't. But they really have become like pets for me. They are the first thing I see in the morning and the last thing I see at night.

My 4 little buggers would say thank you for this video if they could, hopefully they will grow big & strong! Hello, and THAN You for the information on elephant ears. Last summer my husband surprised me with an elephant ear bulb. I was so excited. We started it in a pot that I believe was a large palm tree: much bigger than an 18" one. Well, it grew n grew n grew. We had more compliments on it. It faired through the winter, it died off, n then it came back. Already, as of this date 3/20/23, it is getting bigger n the babies are coming out too. You gave some great tips n I will follow them. I wish I cld post a picture, but I don't know how. We r in our 70's, those wonderful Golden Years. Where we live is in Mississippi about 1 mile from the Gulf of Mexico. God bless u n urs. I grew Colocasia elephant ears on Long Island where the temps would get down to zero degrees F. One year I decided to grow them out of a large compost pile i kept in the corner of the yard where I dumped my leaves and grass clippings and discovered they would over winter fine providing they had enough covering of Fall leaves. They would grow back bigger and stronger the next season and made for a beautiful highlight.
@harvestinghistoryllc3161
@harvestinghistoryllc3161 4 жыл бұрын
Doug, thank you for this comment. Your compost pile must really be cooking and generating heat for the elephant ear roots. The heat of that compost is more important than the leaf covering, but the combination of the leaves and the compost are what is keeping those elephant ears alive. I envy you being able to keep your elephant ears in the ground.

I found some colocasia esculanta (mammoth elephant ears) for $12 for 2 bulbs at my local sams club and planted 14 of them this year. The planting area is part shade and part sun about 2 feet from a north wall and has been drip irrigated. I tilled the area up and amended with lots of cotton burr compost that I’m hoping this will ensure success. I’ll be using peters all purpose 20-20-20 water soluble once they are up and growing. This is my first time growing them and I’ve found your videos extremely helpful!!!

Chastity, elephant ears can take a lot of water. They can even be grown at the edge of ponds, but since yours is in a container, I would recommend a thorough watering when the surface of the soil becomes dry. They are incredibly tolerant guys, so don't fret about watering too much. A great thing to do is to water with a high nitrogen water soluable fertilizer. They love that. Something like 10-5-5 would work.

Nell Son, elephant ears like water. They can actually be planted in ponds, so keep the containers well watered. The soil should be constantly moist. In Hardiness Zones 9-11, elephant ears can flourish in full shade. In Hardiness Zones 6-8, they can flourish in partial shade, but in Hardiness Zones 4-5 they should receive full sun. Hope this helps.

Barb, Thank you for the planting instructions. Do you water the newly potted Elephant Ear, or leave it in dry in the soil until germinated? In late autumn 2020, I lost my black Elephant Ears to FROST( not Covid-19!) I didn't dig them up in time & they got all slimy! Esculenta & Calidora were fine. I live in N. E. Ohio. Where do you live? The other day I dug out all my Diamond Head, Coffee Cups, Bikini Tini, & Aloha Elephant Ears. They're free standing in 5 gallon buckets in my garage. Looks like a jungle in there! Lol. Will any of these have bulbs/corms to go dormant? If so, should I let foliage die back slowly on their own or cut back to 6" & dry them out? I don't want to lose any of them...again! I haven't checked out your website yet. Going there next. I am happy to hear about your passionate relationship with your plants, I feel the same way about mine! Please, if you could respond with your thoughts I'd really appreciate it! Thank you, Matthew

Thank you for your informative video. My plant put out a lily-like single flower a few weeks ago though it didn't last too long. May I ask the size of pot you would recommend if you want taller stems rather than have the plant fan out too much, as an indoor plant? I guess that would also have to do with lighting it gets-perhaps if it receives more overhead light with the rest of it shaded that would encourage its height?

Once I've got my new Alocasia Odor Macrorrhiza elephant ear tubers planted per your instructions where do I put them. I read conflicting advice on this on KZbin. Some say a sunny windowsill, some say place where it is warm but no direct sunlight, others say other things so I'm confused. Where should I put them re light and temperature until our 7b climate allows me to put them outside? Thank you.

Thanks..I potted a giant elephant ear 10 days back in a temporary pot..nothing is happening so far. I have it in my patio outdoor. I am in zone 9b and its staying in low 50s in night and gets to almost 80 in daytime. I hope leaving it outdoors is safe for the bulb. Is there anything I am doing wrong.

I planted my elephant ear tube or in a pot and put it outside. It started to sprout and was looking healthy, but then we got a lot of rain. I noticed that the sprout is turning mushy and likely rotting. Is there anything I can do to save it?

I planted an elephant ear for the first time this year and it turned out beautiful.. I happened to come across your video and I have 2 questions. 1) If next year I decided to put in an 18 inch pot, could I plant small annuals around the borders of the pot? 2) Do you carry edelweiss seeds in your store? An answer would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Destiny, planting your elephant ear in an 18-inch pot next year is a good idea and you can plant some annuals around the elephant ear. Harvesting History does not carry edelweiss seeds. Hope this helps.

You are very fortunate to have a microclimate that allows your elephant ears to winter over. Also, is SE Missouri a hardiness zone 8? That would be warm enough to allow them to winter over. Thank you for your comment.

Great video, so if I understand it correctly, these will should not be planted in the ground and left if you are in zone 5? Also, it needs full sun in this zone? I have a place I’d like to plant it outside, but can’t dig it up and save it over winter inside. Should I stick with a pot?
@harvestinghistoryllc3161
@harvestinghistoryllc3161 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, they cannot stand the Zone 5 winter. Are you sure you could not trim all the top growth and dig up the root and store that during the winter?

I live in Zone 8 where it does get below 45 in winter at night. Do I need to pull the bulb before the temps dip? Or will it be a true perennial in the ground?

Oh how I wish they were deer repellent! I have them planted with my hostas but to no avail.. I lost every single hosta repeatedly throughout the entire growing season. This year I'm going to try planting toxic flowers around my hostas... foxglove, larkspur, delphinium etc.

Harry, if you want them to sprout now, then water as soon as the soil surface is dry. If you do not want them to sprout, do not water until you take them outside.

Maribel, I am so sorry for the delayed response. If you have good drainage and your pot does not stand in water, you cannot overwater. I would dig up the two that are not growing and see what is going on. You may delay their growth by a few days, but it won't permanently hurt them.

Would any of this information also apply to the other colocasias and alocasias?
@harvestinghistoryllc3161
@harvestinghistoryllc3161 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, with this caveat. There are colocasias and alocasias that are much smaller. Most of those will do fine remaining in a 10-12 inch diameter pot. There are a few colocasias and alocasias, like Thai Giant that are so large they probably should be grown in the ground entirely. We are experimenting with our first Thai Giants this year to see what happens when they are grown in pots. Hope this helps.

Christine, either bring the plant in its pot into your home and treat it like a houseplant or if you dig it up, store it in a cool, but dry dark area.

Hi I just recently started gardening and would love to know what is the best thing to do for my elephant ear. I see most people plant them in pots but I was hoping to plant directly in ground. Is pot method the only way? Also would they do well by trees that give them partial shade or would they do better in full sun? I live in an 8b/9a zone
