You're jot gonna believe this but I live in sw PA. I'm zone 6, and depending on Jetstream...zone 5 (easy). Last spring I dropped a elephant ear bulb beneath one of my heaving concrete slab pavers of my patio and it grew but I couldn't lift it on fhe fall and expected it to die. We had a BRUTAL February that killed off a ton of my potted plants that I never lost in a winter before. All my smoke bushes, sky pencil hollies, roses, rose of sharons, and hydrangeas. Well, God as my witness...I wish I could show you a pic.. THAT elephant ear came BACK and is growing out from beneath my concrete slabs between 5 &6 feet tall and about the spread of a Porta-John! I know I shouldn't get emotionally involved with it because it might die this coming winter & any winter in the future, but I am. Now I see the massive size the bulbs can grow 😯, I wonder if I could be doing any foundational damage under there. Oh well, anyway... I look forward to checking out your website. I like your varieties of EEs!!!!

Wow! Has it come back this year? I take all my potted elephant ears in the fall and place in my garage pot and all. I give them a little water every 3 weeks just to moisten the soil, so the bulbs don’t rot. They don’t look great in the spring but after my last frost I take them all out and they spruce back up with a little all purpose miracle grow… I get the kind you hook on the hose and just feed all my containers and bedding plants early spring every 2 -3 weeks and once a week in the summer. I stop feeding mid August. I have had walkers take pictures and I always get people commenting or asking questions. I took horticulture way back in high school I’m 59 now and It is definitely an addiction. Just love being outside and working in the beds and in the fall collecting seeds and sowing seeds. I turned my garage into a greenhouse with grow lights and keep a thermometer in there. My brother thinks I’m nuts I don’t park my car in the garage but is always asking me for help with his gardens.😂

@@tinaknutsen that monster was rising and trying to throw up leaves in the beginning of March! I have it covered beneath a plastic bin. We've had 2 frosts since the last time I peeked at it but I have no doubt it's knocking on the top begging me to take it off. But I will check when I go outside, and I'll explain to it how it will "thank me later" that I'm keeping it covered, and if it don't believe me... I'll tell it to go look at that banana tree that I uncovered too early. 😁 Too bad YT don't allow pics in the comments bc I'd love to show someone this. I wish this miracle of nature was out front where others could see.

I planted Elephant Earns in a Pot at the end of April and they are thriving. I have the Mammoth and the Diamond Elephant Ears. I am so proud of their growth. I live in zone 7 (Tennessee) and I have them on my patio. I may not be able to bring the pots in for the winter. I want to preserve them for the Winter in the Pots. Is that possible?
@harvestinghistoryllc31613 жыл бұрын
Vella, sorry for the long delayed response. You cannot leave the elephant ears out for the winter. Can you put the pots in your garage if you have one. If not you need to dig them up.

@harvestinghistoryllc31614 жыл бұрын
Ruby Ruby, Thank you for the kind comment. We were informed yesterday that there was a crop failure for Hilo Beauty so there will be no bulbs available in 2021. We may have some plants available by February to March. You should call, 410-627-6831in early January. The Mojito bulbs will be back in stock by early February. You will be able to order them starting in December.

@harvestinghistoryllc31614 жыл бұрын
Dawn, The top of an elephant ear will look like a bull's eye on a target or a series of concentric circles. The bottoms have a disarray of roots or in the case of the Mammoth, Colocasia esculenta, the bottom has a series of indentations where last year's roots were removed. I hope this helps.

If you still can't tell, the easiest thing to do is plant the bulb sideways (horizontally) and this will always work.

Good morning. I love this video and as a elephant ear plant fanatic I love the ones you presented in the video today. I went to your website to see it and to buy 2 of the plants I like. And I've noticed that the Hilo beauty is sold out. ( not a surprise) I wanted to buy the black diamond one . But I came to find out that I can't register on your account as I am not from the US. I live in Canada :/ Does it mean I can't purchase anything from your website? Thanks
@harvestinghistoryllc31614 жыл бұрын
PlantRox, with all the new restrictions, I am not sure they will make it through customs. Also, because of the weight, it could be very expensive, like $100 or more just for shipping. It used to be so easy to ship to Canada - our great friends and our neighbor. I can ask the Post Office what it would cost. The Diamond Heads do not weigh much compared to the mammoths.
