Felling Pine Trees
We cut down some big pine trees on our homestead for firewood and to make benches and seating (in the future). This will make space for the small native trees already growing and let light reach some big olive trees.
Our friends Maggie and James have already been here for a week and we're joined by another friend, John (Dovey).
James has been watching ‪@BuckinBillyRaySmith‬ on KZbin for the last 3 months and is keen to put all that he's learned into practice.
He also shares a great tip to measure where your tree will land (work out the length using simple geometry) with an axe.
Planting Trees
We continue our farm tradition, where our visitors take part in planting trees.
Lemon tree, Pear tree, Peach tree, and hazelnut tree.
Did you enjoy watching us plant trees?
This video about expanding our orchard could interest you and Meraid tells you the idea behind the tree planting tradition - • Expanding the Food For...

It doesn’t look easy to me. They do a lot of heavy, too heavy, lifting and carrying for middle-aged bodies. It will show up later, but they are living their dream. Hopefully, they will pass it on before they get too old to keep it going.

So glad you saved a bit of that pine tree for a bench! When I saw that beautiful forked tree come down and watched the chain saw coming down the branch piece by piece, I was saying, "Don't cut it all up!" 😧😥 We used a similar forked pine tree in our house to hold up the loft area and it looks very cool 😎

When chopping wood with an axe, you should keep the handle lower than the head of the axe, that way if the axe slips off the wood, it won't hit your foot.

When you plant trees, a stake at a 45 degree angle will help prevent root damage till the roots grow & anchor themselves into the soil - it’s better for the long-term health of the plant :)
@stevejohnstonbaugh9171
@stevejohnstonbaugh9171 Жыл бұрын
Several rules to remember when planting trees (save your money if you are not going to follow them all. 1) never plant the root flair of the tree. When you get the tree out of the pot, brush the soil away until you see the flair immediately above where the roots start. The root flair must never be buried when planted. 2) The rule of 3's. 1. mulch with 3" of compost 2. make a 3 foot circle of mulch 3. pull the mulch back from the trunk 3" all the way around, 3) Make a circular tube out of welded wire that is at least 5' tall that you can drop over the tree. 4) Install one sturdy stake to support the cage. 5) use nylon wire ties to secure the cage t the stake at the top and bottom. 6) Deep watering required at least once a week through the first summer. 7) Keep the grass cut short around your trees taking care to never damage the bark. 8) Learn about pruning for optimal growth and fruit production. 9) Plant fruit and nut trees on 15' to 20' in all directions to prevent overcrowding of mature trees. Hope that helps! 😊
