Double Gold has been an incredible raspberry in our garden! We planted it last year from bare root and in the fall we were able to pick a handful of raspberries a day which we definitely didn't expect for their first year. This year they've filled in so much and set a tremendous amount of fruit already!

That is very encouraging to hear! I hope ours do well too. Do you have other varieties as well?

@@bluebirdhomestead We have a few red varieties in our patch that are doing fine (I can't remember what they are). They didn't produce last year but are fruiting well this year. Not as vigorous as Double Gold, but hopefully still tasty!

Great tree and berry selections!! I got two honey berries from Stark bros last year, and they were pretty small too. I put them in pots and they sat out all winter under snow etc, and now have grown back big and lush this year. Hoping I get berries!

Honey Berry aka Haskaps are awesome. I planted 3 in my yard two years ago, Aurora, Tundra and Borealis. They looked a lot like yours, just a couple twigs, but they did get leaves and even a berry or two the first year. They are about 2 feet tall/around now. To me they taste like a cross between blueberries and raspberries. They have this awesome tartness to them. I’m looking forward to jam in a few years with mine.

Oh wow! That is wonderful to hear that they sprung back after looking a little rough and have already grown to 2' tall. I bet jam with them will be amazing! Which variety is the sweetest of your 3? -Cara

@@bluebirdhomestead I think they all taste about the same. They are all early varieties, the berries are already forming now, and some of the older varieties created. I think I read the Boreal series (blizzard, beast, beauty) are later blooming and maybe a bit sweeter? I love the tartness personally, it’s a great little surprise when you pop them in your mouth!

Oh ok intersting! I am excited to try them myself for the first time! I think the tartness is nice too. 😊-Cara

That looks great. When the wood chips break down will that lower the soil level? And if so, do you make up for it by adding compost on top? Also curious what kind of wood works best for these wood chips.
@bluebirdhomestead
@bluebirdhomestead 7 ай бұрын
Yes it will, we typically add an inch of compost to each bed every spring. It gives the plants a fresh boost of nutrients too 😊💚

Have you ever canned mulberry jelly/jam/preserves? I’m going to try this weekend, but if you have any tips I would love them!

I have never canned mulberry jam, but I have done blackberry jam multiple times before. They are very similar. I would say the biggest tip I have is to strain the berries through a sieve to get the seeds out for a nicer mouth feel ☺️
