❤ I'm so glad Babka is back! I need some of those ratters

I really enjoyed how chill and laidback this video was! It also inspires me to get out in my garden and plant onions💀 I've been so unmotivated this year in terms of winter crops. I planned to do brassicas, spinach, carrots, and onions, but so far, I only have garlic in because my own stray cats started using a bed or two for litter boxes, and the rain has been nonstop. I just needed a break to get over how frustrating that was! But I'm in Oakland! I have plenty of time! Going to at least get onions and carrots in this weekend!

Don't feel bad, I'm taking a fall/winter break, too. I've only got my garlic in and seeded some broccoli directly in the raised bed. So now i'm gonna have to split it. Every time I tell myself i'm gonna go work on the garden, I end up going to sit down and have two or three cats decide it's lap time. No rain down here, But I better get my ducks in a row soon for when it happens.

I live in zone 6, so I have a built in break from basically November to May. I love growing things, but I feel like I would lose my mind if I didn’t have a cold winter to stop the hustle and bustle of the growing season. (And to kill the ticks and mosquitoes and prevent us from having giant reptiles like Florida🙃)

I am wondering why you don't plant melons and winter squash out in your orchard area? I am in Arizona and put butternut squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, and sweet potatoes near my fruit trees, that way there is plenty of room for them to roam without taking up regular garden space.

Over the years I plant onion “sets” (bulbs) and they have worked great for me. The first year I did this (my kid was 2, they are now 18) I was in a Trader Joe’s and they had a container of fresh “pearl onions” (red, yellow, white) and my daughter and I just pushed them into a container of soil and they all grew into to wonderful green spring onions. I did not know to space them out for larger onions but I mainly grow them for the tops. Over the years I usually get a bag of them at Lowes but they are often dried out. They never got them in this year and Trader’s did not have them but I found pearl onions at Sprouts market. Now I do space them out and have grown some nice full onions over the years. And if I buy green onions at the store I often cut 1-inch of the root end and just shove those into the soil for another round of green onions!

I live in Northern California and can grow intermediate and short day onions. I did an experiment on growing long day onions last year cos I'm on the cusp latitude....what a mistake! They took FOREVER to start bulbing since our day lengths get to barely 14 hours max in late June....and then they just did not have enough time to grow that large bulb. Lesson learned, grow the right onion type for your latitude! Happy New Year!

The problem I have is that most of the short day onions don't seem to store well. The oine that does (Red Creole,) is *real* fond of bolting in my climate.

Please go for ducks instead of chickens. Wayyyyy better fertilizer, it’s cold not hot like chicken poop. It promotes worms to grow And they don’t scratch. Great for slugs great for everything. Super easy to keep in since runners are not flying plus they heard so it’s easy to get them in at night
