Hey guys! Today I am hanging out while planting irish moss in between our flagstone pavers! We love the look of green everywhere and SO much of it died back during the snow (we used a fertilizer de-icer that killed it) and so here I am re-planting it today! Enjoy

I just wanted to pop in and tell you how happy it's made me seeing videos like this. When you went through your mental break, I was crushed. I have felt that way before and it broke me for so long. It truly lights up my heart to see you happy and being silly with Zack and enjoying life in the present. Thanks for sharing your journey! When you are in the depths like that it seems unfathomable that things will ever get better, but you are proof that if you reach out and find help, you can love life again!❤

Look into the buttermilk/moss blender trick. I collected moss from different parts of our property, blended it in a blender with the buttermilk and used it as a pour in addition to moss transplanting. It has been exactly two years and all of our stone work has moss borders now. 🥰

I’ve never heard of something like this!!! How much buttermilk do you use? Is it like a 1:1 ratio??

Irish moss isn't a tall moss. It's pearlwort
@OakwildeDesigns
@OakwildeDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
@@katypomeroy5449 that’s probably a good ratio, I filled the blender half full with one inch size hunks of moss, then covered that in the buttermilk. I had a lot of stone work plus natural stones we just relocated, so in total I used three gallons. It’s a perfect solution for small cracks or crevices.

Irish moss isn't a true moss that spreads via spores, it's a proper plant with roots, so blender methods aren't likely to work very well.

the world is so full of the depp and heard case right now. and for a while i got really into it, and started feeling so, so disheartened that there was a relatively small but considerable group of people who didn't believe or see what i believed and saw. recently i decided to mindfully disengage from all of it. waking up this morning and watching you lovingly plant moss outside your house while your child peacefully napped ... was just what i needed to reconnect with the world's and my own humanness. thank you. these little videos make a sweet, warm, nourishing corner on the internet. sending you love xx

Fellow Canadian here, so very used to dealing with a lot of ice and snow 🥲 I highly recommend simply using fine gravel or sand for icy walkways. Better for the environment, plant safe. Can just be swept away when the snow and ice melts in the spring/summertime. My parents have a walkways similar to yours Kristi with a lot of moss growing in between the rocks and that is what they do.

You can also take a spade and cut the plant in smaller portions to get smaller pieces. I did a creeping thyme lawn that way and cutting it in smaller pieces eventually makes it grow more vigorously then planting the big pot in one place. At first it looks ridiculous, but after a year it filled in really well. My thyme is in full sun. You’re making me want to try iris moss in an other part of my yard, it’s so cute.

My Nana had a nursery in North Texas where she grew Irish Moss every winter into early spring. Along with every Herb & Perennial known to man. Especially anything obscure and rare. People would come from all over America. It was amazing.. she was an herbal cult culture phenomenon for over 45 years.. As we are in Texas the heat quickly becomes too much. But the look & feel of the moss... oh, *gawd* it is nostalgic for me. She has been dead since 12.3.20... but everything she taught me about the Nursery Life resides within me. Seeing you & your family attempt a simple garden brings back memories of her. She knew my heart & drive. She *always* said to me "My Darling Jacs, all I want for you is a small family & a small farm. You will be *so happy* !" Watching y'all reminds me of her. Thank you, Kristi 🖤 Much love from North Texas 🖤

The moss path looks SO cute! I'm obsessed! (My kids do the same things with naps... which started when my son was 2 years old and my daughter was about 4 months. So that was when we stopped napping... at 2 years old and 4 months. So even now that they are 3 years old and 5 years old, if they fall asleep in the car after 11 am... no one sleeps that night.)

With the septic, my husband and I had septic people come out, they found the septic, found the cleanout opening, we had a door put on it, then all we had to do is open the septic door, (you can set a planter on the lid, when not having it cleaned.) No more digging up a whole area, just open a door. Also it is perfectly safe, the door is metal and very very heavy. (almost like a sewer manhole cover.)... I'd look into that before digging up my patio.... or you can have a sewer clean out put on on your lateral sewage line.

One thing to try. Make a slurry of the whole plant mash up the roots and plant and pour it into the lil cracks. It just grows like magic. Moss type growth is so slow. Like you said keep it watered and every part of it will grow. Love your passion for all your endeavours

This can work really well with true mosses that don't have roots and spread via spores, but Irish "moss" is a very tiny plant that needs intact roots to grow.

Irish moss is so beautiful and has so many purposes. Even as pills against a sore throat. Very good choice to integrate it into your garden. A garden is a wonderful place. Maybe the best place to recover from personal stress and to regain strength for other things in life. You are very lucky to own one and to be healthy to care for it and make it beautiful. I had such a sweet little pond with my favorite plants around it. And now I can hardly walk any more due to a very painful neuropathy in my legs. It is becoming a wilderness. I love animals and plants, so I would be very glad to see more content like this.
