Tuesday 11 June - I notice some of the dwarf beans which have herminted and broken the ground have been dug up and I'm sure it's by squirrels... and I get our brassicas in (Dazzling Blue Kale, Portuguese Cabbage, and the hybrid cross of DBK and PC);
Friday 14 June - I check various things around the plot whilst picking up two thermos flasks for a work social tomorrow. I also get the radish out that are now going to seed, and find out were in the middle of an incident being attended by emergency services;
Sunday 16 June - time to harvest our broad beans... not our best harvest though certainly not our worst... I also say how I will prep them and freeze then for portions of pesto through the coming months.

My beans and peas have been chomped by field mice. I put organic slug pellets out and they were eaten by the mice. They love them and don’t appear to be harmed, thank goodness. Fighting a losing battle. At least I have tomatoes and cucumbers in the conservatory. I can live off salad.

There seem to be many losing battles this year, though fingers crossed for your toms and cucumbers. 🤞

Squirrels and chipmunks always go after my tender bean, sunflower and many other seedlings. They nip the stem and leave the two halves where it was growing. I repurpose a bandage cardboard tube (from work, nurse here) as a collar right when I see the littlest part of the bean coming up. They can’t get to the stem at all when the collar is properly lodged in the soil. It has helped with slugs too. But I’m in New Jersey, US. Sometimes when I don’t have the other type, I use loo roll inner tube, cut it into 1in-1 1/4 inch pieces. (These are not as sturdy.) Otherwise I would be forever resowing seeds. Try that.

I have used collars in the past though generally found that what has been at our plants are slugs, which are happy to just go under and pop up and munch. 😬

The dang squirrels have been digging everything out of the pots I've planted. So far not out in the main fenced garden area. But now I think there's a bunny in there. It's kind of overgrown so I'm just cleaning out a spot and planting various things in. This week in eastern US it's going to be in the 90's! Unusual for this early in the year. I would glady send this heat to Richard ; ) I think you're doing a great job clearing up your allotment. Now if the critters would just leave your plants alone. Good luck this growing season. That broad bean hummus you mentioned sounds good.

We've not usually had issues with squirrels, though this year many have complained about them... 😬

Ugh. The birds did that to some of my beans in Indiana USA. We caught them in the act. They just snipped them off and didn't even eat them. Love your videos!

Got my second sowing of brassicas out today, red and white cabbage, cauliflowers, kale and purple sprouting broccoli. Then sowed a few rows of carrots, golden beetroot, lettuce and very late parsnips, all casualties of slugs and snails. Jo Devon 🙂

I feel like some things are growing really well, and other things are just doing nothing, but then I have to remind myself that there are some things that have only been in the ground for two weeks. I'm in the 'just see what grows' boat, this year, too.

Weird just came to watch your week at the plot and noticed I was not subscribed anymore. So pressed on subscribe and chose all to get the notification. Then I was unsubbed again immediately. Had to go through that three times before it stuck .... that's not good so if you are losing numbers maybe that is why.. Thanks for sharing. Terribly sorry for the damage so disheartening. We planted a lavender hedge and the rabbit keep trying to dig it up. Nature huh :0)

Thank you for the video Paul. Will you double pod the beans before blitzing, I'm going to try your pesto recipe. My harvest will be similar to yours and I had to totally resow. Now being overwhelmed by blackfly 😢

Have you tried the radish leaves cooked? I made a vegetable lo mein the other night with radish leaves and lamb's quarters, it was good. Every gardening season is different, this year included.
