The more Cole and the other FarmTubers can inform/educate us and the wider public on how hard/risky/expensive and downright hard work farming is to produce the food on our tables. The more (I hope) people will appreciate them and understand what they do for us. Without the likes of Cole and family, Welkers,, Zac MNMillenial Farmer in the US and Tom Pemberton etc in the UK, millions of everyday suburban/city folk would have zero idea of what goes into and where their food comes from. I'm lucky that I come from aa farming area and from a family with farming links(Butchers/meat trade) so I have some idea of the struggle.
@justthings64052 жыл бұрын
You have to work the soil in the fall to prep for the spring---that corn field you were looking at would have been uniformly dry instead of having corn bedding with frozen ground because it wasn't somewhat buried and conditioned properly. The early planting is 75% right year after year..If you are going to optimize yields, you have to put the time in with fall's work!
@dalegereaux18632 жыл бұрын
I think you are very wise to study the soil charts because if you're not always improving things you're going backwards. There is so much more to farming than we ordinary people will ever know. Thanks for teaching us some of it !

curious why y'all don't plant cover crops in the off-season to help replenish- healthy soil is covered (attracts worms, healthy biodiversity in the soil, etc.). I would be curious to see if spraying worm casting tea out in the fields before/after seeding fertilizes it.
@tugaroocrab2 жыл бұрын
That’s not possible with large acreage.
@jeremiahparkhurst52442 жыл бұрын
It is possible on large acreage there are farmers in Australia and Canada doing exactly what AB is talking about
@AB-ol5uz2 жыл бұрын
@@tugaroocrab They have the sprayer they use to spray nitrogen or other elements so it's just a matter of spraying fertizilizer/compost tea (diluted compost) or worm casting tea(diluted worm castings). They make an enormous difference in residential gardens (professional and home consumption). Mono crops deplete from the soil without adding to it so it's up to the gardener/farmer to offset that every season or shift to multi crop. If you haven't seen the documentary Biggest Little Farm, I highly recommend it. It's a commercial farm in CA that had basically become a dust bowl - and changing the way that replenished the soil, as well as planting an incredibly diverse set of crops led to a highly productive and healthy farm - and when he shows the aerial shots of the commercial mono-crop farms that surround them, it becomes very clear how important healthy soil really is.

Love the hair cuts, guys. Soil building.....sounds like the permaculture guys.😍 I grew up on a dairy/cash crop farm. Lots of natural manure to replenish the fields. Loved the corn cob mulch for the flower beds. And when the cows were in the front orchard/pasture they did an excellent job trimming the trees and eating the apples and pears. One summer was very wet, the corn grew like crazy and we filled those silos. The weight of theirn squeezed and compacted the corn chop. Fluids eased out from the bottom drains.....and cooked in the sun......whereupon I saw happy cows staggering around very tipsy. Life on the farm has its funny momments.

In order to get my little garden and lawn to produce, I've spent over $1k in chemicals the past three years to buffer the pH and to insert Iron and Manganese, as well as potash and nitrogen. I finally saw an improvement in yields for sweet corn, pole beans, and tomatoes. Next year, 5 acres of sweet corn for the local farmers market but each acre planted a week apart.

I wonder if any of the companies making round steel grain bins have tested one in a wind tunnel? About 10 years ago I built a scale wind tunnel to try to measure the wind resistance on a model of an F150 with and without a topper on it. The fan I had wasn’t strong enough to be able to measure anything noticeable. I even had an ounce scale connected to an L shaped piece of cardboard. It was a fun thing to do. It would need a really strong fan to make it work.

Usually, the weather in California is farm favorable nearly all year round. However, one year in the late 70's, a violent spring storm came in at the end of planting season and dropped a record amount of rain and hail in just one afternoon. The end result was that thousands of acres of planted cotton was now under water. When the ground dried, it left a hard crust which the seeds could not push through. All those acres had to be replanted at great expense.

I suspect some nefarious billionaires are messing with the weather in hopes of creating famine. One of them even said he plans to release tons of chalk dust high in the atmosphere to reduce the amount of solar radiation reaching the ground to combat climate change. This could explain the cold spring weather here in the Midwest.
