Oh my, I'm so ready to plant flowers. It's been in the 70's the last couple days in Michigan so I'm getting ready for the local greenhouses of open ( I have a list of opening date thanks to my friend). All the ground moles holes have been filled ( of course the dogs helped dig them cause they like to catch them). We have fencing that needs to be replaced so that will take a bit

You’ve got worms 🪱!!! A good sign for happy soil. Question 🙋🏻‍♀️: Do you notice a difference in taste/quality from the produce plant outside vs the ones you plant in the towers? Also, should raised bed soil be used instead of potting soil when planting in the towers? I’m considering growing veggies in a tower on my apartment patio. Thank you - nice to see you and guest host Russell planting spring crops. Happy weekend everyone!

Hey there! I have had the same issue with my raised beds over the years especially when I first built them. I found the answer to the problem of getting dry compacted sides and corners in beds build with wood. It is caused by the wood simply wicking moisture out of the soil on the side that is most exposed to direct sun. Depending on your set up sometimes adding a layer of pebbles between the wood and soil helps or just use something that separates it and it will fix the issue! I have also used just a double layer of wood in the past and that has worked. I have also created thin beds that ring the main bed and plant that with herbs or marigolds or whatever will provide shade for the side of the main bed . 😊

Excited about your spring planting plan!!! That's unfortunate about the compact areas in your bed. That may mean you don't have enough worm activity in that bed to help keep the soil loose. I don't know if you ever focus on insect beneficials in the soil but maybe that can be a future focus so that the soil is vital and loose, the soil insect beneficials get meals, and you get great crops thus creating a nice raised bed ecosystem. ♻

Celery and leeks can be perennial. Just cut the top off or celery by the stalks just above the ground for both. Do you all like asparagus? If so areas where you want to break-up hard pan, plant them as their roots go really deep. Even if you don’t eat them, they’re very pretty plants, pretty enough to be houseplants❣️😁

I'm glad you can enjoy the nicer cooler/wet spring we usually get here in New Jersey zone 6 but similiar to our last summer's extended heat wave, our spring this year is unseasonably hot. Every year is unpredictable for us but we just roll with it as it best fits our climate. I'm growing giant alliums for the first time and noticed one of the plant has what looks like roots growing out of the leaves. Picture a flat leaf with root tails growing straight out (3 D). It does not look like leaf minor. Have you or anyone in the group seen this before? Google does not help. Maybe this strange weather is creating mutants & maybe it's subliminally asking me to propagate it 😂.
