Back in NJ, I worked in lawn care and planted a registered American Chestnut seedling for someone. They suggested that I throw the old cat box litter they had composted up in the back yard in the planting hole. It was their tree and their land, so I did it. The daughter raised cats for show and they used wood pellets for the cat box litter. The fecal matter was not in it, as they removed it before throwing the litter in the compost pile, which had kitchen scraps of all kinds in it. I`d say that within about 10 years, that tree was higher than their 2 story house and it almost completely dominated the front yard. The bole was probably was 10 inches in diameter at the 6` level. That was about 15 years ago.

What's to keep the rodents from going down inside the top of the flashing??
@williamfisher29062 жыл бұрын
I think you should have used galvanized mesh instead of the aluminum flashing. There's a fine mesh, about 1/8" available. This way water can migrate to the roots. The flashing becomes a barrier

I bed mine. Bed prep is remove the grass to bare soil. Turn the soil. Place nuts spaced on a 1' grid. Cover with leaves 4 to 6" thick. Cover that with chicken wire. Cover that with an old tubular livestock gate to hold everything in place. The next spring watch for the sprouts to come up. Remove the gate and chicken wire while the sprouts are small enough to pass through the chicken wire grid without leaf damage. Hold seedlings in the bed until dormancy and then transfer them to where you want them.

Install an Owl nest box to help control rodents. There are Screech owls, Barn Owls and Northern Saw-whet Owl. Check to see what type of Owl nest box would be best for your habitat. In Illinois Northern Saw-whet Owl will nest north of the 40 degree longitude line. They are the smallest and like forests. The Barn Owl is the largest and therefore the largest nest requirements. They like hunting in open range and eat more prairie voles than forest mice; they also like rabbit. The Screech Owl falls in-between size wise and hunting prey. They have the advantage they stay in an area year round while the other Owl tend to nest, migrate for a few months and then return to nest.

Sure it’s an American? Most planted around farmsteads were Chinese or ‘Dunstan’ hybrids? A friend of mine said he had an American Chestnut but it really was Horsechestnut.

Same. I’d much rather have a true American chestnut with an edible chemical protecting it than a crappy 15/16 American chestnut. As far as I know darling 4 and darling 56 (or is it darling 58?) are doing very well, d4 can just fight off the fungus and d56/58 can completely protect itself and kill the fungus quickly. Both are the GM type and over a decade old and are still alive.
@jamessullivan99924 жыл бұрын
@@BigCroca Where can you buy a darling 4 or 58 ? I bought some tree's from a nursery that claimed they were resistant but nursery men are known lyers .
@BigCroca4 жыл бұрын
@@jamessullivan9992 you can't buy them, they were individual experimental trees created by the acf. they are still making variants but they aren't for sale, they should be for sale by 2025 or earlier.

X our fingers it’s that soon. But in a word for the hybrids they’re probably going to be the key to resistance against Phytophthora root rot.

Did you even watch the video? They’re the dunstan type, 15/16 American 1/16 Chinese. GMO is better since it’s actually fully American with a protein from wheat added that breaks down the acid produced by the blight. Without the acid the fungus can’t break down the trees cambium and get the nutrients, so it dies. Neat stuff really, I can’t wait for the GMO type to be released.
