I read that you had 3 come up successfully. I hope you make an update video on them please.

We did! They are in pots right now and will be planted next spring, most likely. Whenever we do though, I will do a video. Thanks for the ask.

Thank you so much for this video! You just solved a long standing mystery for us! We'd been finding these fruits in our yard (but never with the husk) and couldn't figure out who they were. Now we'll have to go on a search for the tree they're coming from and see what we can do to help them thrive!

That's wonderful to hear! We have 3 butternuts we grew out from seeds we will plant soon. Fingers crossed they survive long enough to fruit.

Hey, any update on these? I found some this week and wanted to plant em myself in a similar way

They all came up and look great! We will plant them this spring at some point and I will make a video. You should totally plant yours, but make sure you eat one too. SO GOOD!

I did! They're all planted and hopefully despite not being in the ground all winter (I found them last week),at least 1/9 stratified and is viable. I also tried one and it was still delicious after all those months :)

I just planted four butternut trees on my property in western Washington. How are yours doing?
@thecommonmilkweed6 ай бұрын
We planted them in a river valley and two are doing great and one promptly died. They are far away from water, but in rich soil. We hope yours do super well!!

I have very old butternut tree and don’t look too good. Before it gone I would like to plant new one. I collect bunch nuts recently! Is it okay to plant nuts directly in little pot or little container like yours? I know there’s different way to do them but I’m new to this so not sure if I’m doing it correctly.

@@user-hs1ow3kn9r Sure thing! Just dehusk them and plant them wherever is best for you. Then label where you put them. 😃

Do they need stratified in the fridge like other Juglans species?

Page 7 of this document answers your question. It looks like 120 days of cold/moist stratification. Good luck! www.extension.purdue.edu/extmedia/FNR/FNR-421-W.pdf

Thing to remember is even though your tree is growing form nut in pot and is a plant the squirrel will still dig them up and eat the nut I lost lots one year. I have sense taken care of most of the tree rats. One year they got all my peaches, hazelnuts, pears and some plants of nuts. not counting the plums now we have a war and they lost and will always if I see them. My dog loves it and enjoys some squirrel stake from time to time

You are absolutely right. We put these containers in a hardware cloth box to keep them safe. We did lose a bunch of hazelnuts one year in a hardware cloth, because the mice found a tiny way in through the framing. Amazing little critters that can fit through the tiniest openings. We learned the hard way.

That range map is a bit off. I live in NW Wisconsin, above where the range in your book shows. Our butternut trees have been ravaged by butternut canker, but we still have many trees around. I wouldn't say they're abundant, but definitely present. I've been worried about their population though, and have wanted to plant more trees to help spread the population. So thanks for this video!

Range maps are often a challenge aren't they? I hope the butternuts there continue to reproduce and make more. Some day, one will be resistant.
