Many years ago I purchased an electric cement mixer from Harbor Freight(very inexpensive). I used it to remove the husks from black walnuts - it worked great. I am going to try it on Butternuts.

I thought about that or I've seen a pressure washer used but didn't have either one at my disposal. Probably putting some crushed A stone in would work great. Let me know how it works!

We have an old little 50 gallon cement mixer we use for butter nuts. We let the husks get mostly brown put them in the mixer with a couple potato size rocks to help and spray the hose in for some water, then dump them and the slurry out and spray away the black goo, works nice 👍

You’re lucky to have those my last one that I used to harvest from got taken down about three years ago. those sure crack out a lot nicer than black walnuts do

How about using a drill with a paint paddle on it in a 5 gal. bucket half full of water. Then stir til husk come off.

Gosh, pecans are so much easier, but yeah, I know they don't grow anywhere near that far north. Glad to hear the butternut species is recovering from blight.

What about not cleaning the husks at all, just planting them whole as they are when gathered from under the tree?

Glad to hear they may be making a recovery in some places. Here in NJ they are near extinct I think as I haven't seen a single one for 5 years of looking amongst the gazillions of Black Walnut we have.

I'm wondering if a bucket with some water and rocks or abrasive stones would work.
