Last week we told you about a plant haul we purchased from a group called "Plants for Everyone" that is in Asheville, North Carolina. Last week we picked them up and brought them home. We soaked the trees in a 5 gallon bucket of water overnight and the next afternoon, we got to planting.
We are planting 4 Carya Hardy Pecan Trees, 1 Jiro Persimmon, and 1 Pink Lady Apple Trees. The pecan are going next to our Dunstan Chestnut trees and the Persimmon and Pink Lady will go in our fruit orchard.
Along with this, we got some muscadine vines and some Blueberry bushes from "Plants for Everyone" sale as well. All of these are bareroot so it is important to get them in the ground or in a container as soon as possible for their survival.
We mix up a mixture of peat moss and potting soil for the blue berry bushes making sure to soak the peat moss ahead of time. Then we use straight potting soil for the muscadine bushes. We also pot up the bare root trees that are going to my cousin for him to plant.
Come along and join us on this journey of building out our small hobby farm. The ride is going to be fun.

Thanks bestie lol. Man I tell ya my dirt is awful here. It’s a combination of red clay and what the locals call bill tallow. It’s a yellowish clay that smells awful. Hopefully with me doing this it will help!

Lots of good trees are going in Ronnie. Thanks for showing us your progress. I have been reading some on paw paws ,whenever they are young, they like mostly shady spots. When they get a few years old, you can move to sunny locations..
@EarlybirdFarmSC
@EarlybirdFarmSC Жыл бұрын
You are right about the shade. I’m sure that is part of the problem. One other issue is these Paw Paws were wild ones growing in my area. They don’t good when you move them from what I read. I figured the tubes should provide shade for them. The ones I raised from seed are doing great and growing fine. It’s just these two that I moved that were growing wild that are not doing good. I actually got one last summer from West Virginia I dug up that was growing wild beside a road and it is doing great as well but it’s still potted. Are you planning on getting some too? Thanks buddy.

@@EarlybirdFarmSC yep, I am going to start a few this year. I have 200 paw paw seeds stratified in the fridge and 200 persimmon seeds also. Can't wait to get them planted.

@@MySliceOfHeavenoutdoors That is awesome. I planted 5 from seeds. They grow wild here in my state as well and my buddy has them on the property. Are the persimmon American Persimmons? If you need more let me know, I got a half of a gallon zip lock bag in the fridge now. I saved them from this fall where I made persimmon pulp to make persimmons pudding!
@MySliceOfHeavenoutdoors
@MySliceOfHeavenoutdoors Жыл бұрын
@Earlybird Farm, SC yep, these are American. But what I read you can graft the Japanese onto the American and vise versa. The paw paw I am most likely going to use for rootstock.
@EarlybirdFarmSC
@EarlybirdFarmSC Жыл бұрын
@@MySliceOfHeavenoutdoors I thought about doing that with the American(using for root stock) to raise some more Asian. I’ll have my own scion wood next season from the two I planted (Fuyu and Jiro) hopefully. I want to get done Pawpaw cultivars too if possible.

Half of my county is sand and the other half is red clay. I’m close to the line but mine is mostly red clay or a yellowish clay the call bull Tallow. The back portion of my land is full of quartz rocks. It’s a weird mixture here lol. Yeah the auger sure is handy! Thanks Don.

What does your compost consist of?
@EarlybirdFarmSC
@EarlybirdFarmSC Жыл бұрын
It is coffee grounds for the nitrogen component, leaves and rotted wood chips for the carbon source. I will add grass or comfrey from time to time too when I have it available. I will make a video soon on this I hope. Been meaning to do it for a few months!
