Planting Tropicals at Aqualand with Greg and Ed

In this video we flew up to Aqualand in Illonis. We planted all that Florida has to offer: Tropical water lilies, Victoria amazon lilies, aquatic marginals, bananas, Alocasia and more with Greg The Pond Guy and Ed The Pond Professor. We also discussed wetland filters and building a recreational pond at Holt Nurseries this winter.

It’s a Cuban tree frog, an invasive (but cute) species in Florida. Amphibians have very delicate skin which is why they’re a good indicator of the health of a particular biome. It’s not a great idea to handle them too often without gloves as toxins from human hands are readily absorbed through their skin.

I’m wondering what they plan on doing with all the tropicals during the winter. I was taught a method of over-wintering tropicals in a dormant-state during a northern winter. The people at Waterford Gardens in Upper Saddle River, NJ told me it wouldn’t work, I proved them wrong! 😜

What’s the method of over-wintering tropicals in the Mid-Atlantic? I know fig trees need to be wrapped and canna lilies are supposed to be dug up.

Tom would you ever consider adding arrowhead plants along with the pickle weed and maybe some read plants not cattails but read plants along with the irises and such I like the native yellow irises of North America mixed with the purple irises of Japan They make a beautiful color combination of the royal blue purple and the golden yellow
