In this video, produced in collaboration with the Vic West Food Security Collective, Tayler explains best practices for planting your fruit tree.
In anything but extremely well-drained clay, you are going to want to plant on a small mound. In heavier, wetter clay, a large mound may be necessary if other drainage improvements are not possible.

Great video! Knowledgeable and to the point. The deer will eat through the openings in your wire cage. It is best to put on the wire cage with strong wire as you did but then also add a ring of small gage chicken wire around the browsing height. About at 4-6 feet. Just my experience with the deer in Metchosin..

Your soil looks good. We have pure sand and have to build up soil before we can plant something in the ground.

Thank you for the informative video. I planted 40 bare root trees in Saanich last year. I am a bit concerned that I planted them a bit too deep especially because I am planning to cover my garden in wood chips, Back to Eden. All my root stocks are above the ground but not much like in your video, I think they may have settled down since planting. I am wondering if I should dig up the trees and plant them on the mounds or just keep holes around the trunk of the trees. The holes would need to be up to 8 in deep once I put the chips down.

Hard to know without seeing it and knowing your soil type and drainage, but chances are, lifting now (in the dormant season before it gets too big) would be a good idea.
