What kind of soil do you recommend I use with the octopot? I am leaning towards using Fox Farms Ocean Forest, organic compost, worm casting, and extra perlite.

That sounds like a good mix. We suggest HP Pro Mix but there are a lot of good alternatives. Simply make sure the balance of soil/perlite is 60/40 and the density of the soil is on the lighter side.

Kinda danced around the bubbler question. Would a bubbler add to the performance?

The bubbler is unnecessary and could potentially cause more damage because the system is designed to create the ideal environment. Additions could alter the balance of elements.

Thank You, I am glad to see this particular posting. This satisfies a concern of mine. At the Octopot web site and the included instruction manual emphasizes ONLY starting with a bare seed or a bare clone stem cutting, but NOT to transplant a healthy seedling. According to the other Octopot vids seen, it may take 2-3 weeks before the first appearance of growth is observed. I have always germinated seeds to ensure seed viability, move to Solo cup and allow good seedling growth/root development then transplant to final soil medium. According to this video I can still do this...Yes/No???? If NOT please explain why????

Yes, you can follow your traditional methods of transplantation. Thank you for the reply. Thought you'd be interested in my experience with the Octopot system. Germinated seeds, moved to Dixie cups with Roots Origianl Organic Soil. An email to Roots suggested adding approx. 10% vermiculite to to satisfy the 60/40 ratio you recommend. Watered with straight rain water. At 11 days, phenomenal growth, ready to transplant. Seems cannabis LOVES the Roots Organic soil. Better than anything I've tried before. Seedlings under Mar Hydro 96 blue/red veg light. Assembled Octopot, 60/40 Roots soil, 2 gallons R.O. water/rainwater pH'd to 6.3m NO nutes, sprinkled mycorrhiza on transplant roots and planting hole. Roots says soil charged with a full 30 days of nutes, nothing else needed. Over top watered twice, approx. 1 qt. each watering. A full 1 3/4"-2" growth in only 5 days!! Healthy, strong, lush growth, sturdy base stalk, perfect colored leaves, no nute burn. NO transplant shock, plants took off immediately, obviously already seeking/responding to the reservoir water. Moisture gradient apparent, bottom 1/3rd is damp, dryer as you move upward. Changed over to a Spyder Farmer 1000 model quantum board light. One question, one comment. 1) My local hydro store owner, a LONG time grower expressed concern of stagnant water, possible algae since no water movement, aeration. To preclude this, suggested adding H2O2 (hyd. peroxide) but not sure of best quantity per gallon?? Your thoughts?? 2) Apparently the 3 gal. kit does NOT have the centering/locating peg for the net cup. Since neither the reservoir bottom nor the net cup are totally flat, when filling cup/sleeve, it tends to rock and slide around, adding difficulty to the process. So far, very impressed but adding this feature similar to the 6 gallon model would make this much, much easier. For those sitting on the fence, for those 'doubting Thomas's' of this system, get over it. This thing simply WORKS!!! Buy it, you won't regret it. . Finally, a shout out for a fairly new nute company, Hydroponic Research here in the S. Diego area. A full product line of water soluble micro pelletized nutes, supplements. Very little needed, no waste, adopted by the cannabis research program at UCSD. Only ONE item needed for veg and bloom growth, supplements added only at final flowering stage. Worth a look if you are tired of the mixing, correcting multi step nutes, tired of your grow room looking like a chem lab. One and done till the end. Full tech support online/phone. The ONLY company that responds to questions in my experience.

Thanks for all the feedback, we always love to hear how the system works for individuals! To answer your question, the system does not need anything added to prevent stagnant water. The system is designed with the proper dimensions to prevent stagnant water by natural oxidization. The surface area of the water is large enough to keep oxygen moving and water doesn't stagnate. Also, in reference to your comment about the 3 gallon reservoir, unfortunately it is the first design and we are unable to update the plastic mold at this time but hopefully soon!

The water simply needs to be maintained in the reservoir, not replaced.

What do you think of using compost teas and perhaps putting them directly into the reservoir? I'm looking to set up an all organic grow business with living soil/super soils. I love the idea of the octopot, but I've read in another comment section they aren't ideal with this setup. There's got to be a way to balance this I'd think. I'd like to create a soil with this that's healthy enough for worms and a fungul/microbial web. And recycle nutrient rich soils. I really don't want to use any liquid ferts like a hydro setup. I just don't trust them for cannabis. Thoughts? Thanks...

We have had mixed reviews on super soils and are going to start a side by side this week with our own super soil that we are going to create. The concern with most super soils is the aeration, but we will see how it goes with our recipe!

You can, they work best in a balanced mix with soil amendments such ad composts or manures. Coco and perlite alone will work, however maintaining pH and nutrient levels becomes more complicated. Coco-Loco is an example of a coco mix that works well in the Octopot.

i am looking for outdoor pots for well,,,, cannabis trees.....not plants lol we grow outdoor in 8'x8' boxes right now, light dep and all that jazz.....kinda looking maybe just for light dep so 5'x'5' would be perfect. Thanks

Would you recommend starting a plant from seed?

Seeds and clones thrive in Octopot Grow Systems with only one over the top watering at the time of planting. Hydrotropism is a natural plant process that causes plants in Octopots to seek and grow towards the water in Octopot's Hydro Reservoir. Plants develop as many or as few roots into the water as that specific plant variety needs for optimum moisture, just like in nature. While seeds and clones develop roots downward towards the water, capillary action in Octopot's Gro Sleeve creates a moisture gradient throughout the soil. The moisture gradient promotes fast healthy growth of plant roots from seeds and clones without any over the top watering. Watering over the top is not recommended in Octopot Grow Systems except during the initial planting because it interferes with the natural plant process of hydrotropism. When plants sense water coming from the top they will establish very shallow root systems near the surface of the soil which is not healthy for plants.

How big chunks of perlite do you use? The perlite I have seen to be bigger than what I see your using in your mixture

We end up with a variety of perlite sizes. As long as the soil medium/perlite mix is properly balanced 60/40 then the exact size of perlite should not be a problem.

A wider range of pH is tolerated in Octopot Grow Systems than in soil or hydroponic growing methods. This gives growers some room for error without losing plants. PPM and pH ranges vary depending on what crop you’re growing. Many of our customers find the sweet spots for pH between 6.3-6.7 and PPMs at 600-800. Thanks for the question!
