Ok it has been a month and i want my Terra Tinkering back. Are there any projects in the making?
@TerraTinkering5 жыл бұрын
We meant to be back last week but both Erika and I came down with Strep Throat, and it's been pretty awful. I'm hoping there will be a video this week but our voices are still kind of shotty. We do have some new projects going, one has to do with growing mushrooms, we started it already but we've just been giving them time to grow so we could post the whole video all at once. Another project we'll be working on soon is another attempt at a salt water ecosphere, we're going to go about it in a simple manner and not try to source the water, but we purchased a magnetic stirrer to help circulate the water. We intend to give a little time for the algae to grow before we start any brine shrimp hatching, we also have some specific plans for plants in this ecosphere. The very next video though will be a 1 year ecosphere update on the Amphi-Pod. We're also planning a collab project where we and a few other ecosphere channels all gather and make an ecosphere in the same container to see who's survives the longest and how they all turn out. We might even meet up with one of the people [no spoilers] and gather from the same location for it! There's probably more projects we thought of but haven't fully fleshed out yet, but these are the ones we're currently planning or creating.

Thanks, it wasn't originally going to be the beginning intro, but we wanted to use it to illustrate people digging up dirt for the project with a fun little camera effect. It was fun to experiment with some new video editing techniques, I think we'll try some similar stuff in the future and try to improve at it a bit more!

Thanks, I made it myself and spent a shameful amount of time making very minor adjustments until I deemed it acceptable, haha. I used it in the last video as well for the end screen, but I was a few pixels off on some of the placeholders so I had to adjust it slightly before I could use it again in this video. I'm pretty happy with it! I might animate it a little later if I can get my tablet to work again. [This is Erika.]

Any rules on collection ie: depth/ do you want only surface, or should it be mixed up? Or should some send topsoil, and some send 6inches down? Make sure it's dry? If soil is damp should we wait a few days for it to dry? You might have sprouts before it arrives. Should we make sure there are no visible plant life? So surprises if it grows? I could go on.......lol
@TerraTinkering6 жыл бұрын
You really seem excited about this one! For this one we didn't want to place many restrictions on the soil being sent and have to recreate those radio disclaimers with speed reading terms haha. Depending on how this project goes and the participation, we would use that as a gauge for recreating one with more constraints. It would be interesting to see what would grow only from soil that is from a decent depth down rather than what is on top! Once we receive the soil, any visible growth we will likely pick out as we build the project. Like you said there's a decent chance we'll have some sprouts arriving that weren't there when they were sent out. I never thought I'd be so exciting to get soil from people!

We had another friend say they didn't get a notification either, that's odd. double check you have the bell icon turned on for notifications, but considering you comment on just about all our videos I'm guessing you already have it on and KZbin just had some sort of issue where they didn't notify you.

Love your videos their one of my favorites!Also I was wondering about how the brine shrimp ecosphere/tub is going?I think it’s cool because I am attempting a brine shrimp ecosphere myself.
@TerraTinkering5 жыл бұрын
Something about the environmental factors of the water we gathered, or the temperatures we had the container in didn't wind up working out. We tried to gather the water, and unlike the previous time where we mixed up our own brine mix, the brine shrimp didn't even successfully hatch fully. When we mixed up a solution before, they had survived until we had added them to the ecosphere and they survived a few weeks. Since it's the exact same brine shrimp eggs, I think we've determined that the water we gathered was likely to blame. We're intending to do another attempt with mixed water but both Erika and I caught Strep Throat so videos have been delayed for several weeks as we've been recovering. I'm actually hoping to start that project pretty soon though, after we get the 1 year ecosphere update out!

When is the update on the brine shrimp?
@TerraTinkering6 жыл бұрын
They didn't survive, that's why there's been no update but we've been toying with ideas some more on how to try and go about it again. I think we need circulation in the water, so we actually purchased a magnetic stirrer- but the other big issue is creating a food source for them that can keep up with feeding all the brine shrimp that we'll be trying to hatch. This is still in the works but we did already purchase the magnetic stirrer for the idea.

@TerraTinkering5 жыл бұрын
No worries I appreciate you mentioning that! I had to rewatch the video and I now see that somehow that slipped by while clipping it all together. I had intended to mention both mites and springtails , but wound up forgetting to mention the mites. Looks like I dropped the springtail clips off instead of the mites and made that mix-up happen haha. It's funny how they both do very similar stuff but in a lot of hobbies that use springtails, seeing mites is taboo

I can not send soil why
@TerraTinkering6 жыл бұрын
We would love to accept soil from everyone, but unfortunately there's laws in place that makes it illegal for us to ask people to ship us their soil from certain states or counties within the US, as well as internationally. A lot of it has to do with parasites and pests that could be present in the soil I believe. I'm sorry you won't be able to send soil from the sounds of it, but we're really happy to have you along for the project at least as a viewing audience!
@kat369-mine6 жыл бұрын
Invasive bugs, plants and animals have ruined entire ecosystems. And it would be horrible to be the person who let loose a bug or plant, which is environmently controlled in your area naturally. That would ruin Tims state because there's nothing to stop it. If you want an example, look up rabbits and frogs in Australia. And kudzu closer to home. I don't know why I called you Tim. I have no idea what your name is. So many T's I guess, lolol
@TerraTinkering6 жыл бұрын
@@kat369-mine Haha, it's ok, my name is Travis and my wife's name is Erika. Everything you said is accurate though. The very small area of Virginia that's not allowed to send soil is actually the part we're in, but luckily it's only illegal to send soil from our location, not to receive it, so on the bright side we can still do this project like we'd hoped.

I was indeed pretty happy! Haha, glad you enjoyed it. It was originally going to be used later in the video to sort of illustrate digging up soil from your backyard but in editing it just didn't work out the way we'd planned. It was definitely an attempt at a new sort of style, but I don't think we'd use this for every video, just this one.
