Friendly reminder to not put succulents in a terrarium, especially not a closed one. They need airflow so it can’t be closed, and they’ll rot very easily when moisture is retained, and terrariums are going to retain too much (honestly even with drainage and an open system). The succulent terrariums are cute af but don’t rot your babies, it’s not worth it!

@@hogwartswiftiee go for a shallow pot with good drainage holes. Bonsai pots are a good option because they come in many colours/shapes/sizes but are all shallow and have good drainage holes. In mid-large sized bonsai pots you can fit 10+ succulent/cacti in them and it’s like a mini garden for your desk, and it only needs water maybe once a month. Some varieties may need more water, so keep an eye on the leaves of the plants and if they start to shrivel/shrink or get floppy or thin feeling then they need more water. If the plant starts going black or squishy or dropping lots of leaves then it needs less water (put it in a sunny/warm spot to dry out the dirt a bit).

Do NOT use air dry clay as plant pots. Air dry clay is meant to be re-activated with water, so if you water your plants it'll mess with the clay, or the clay will mix with your plant roots, Even if you seal it with paint, it'll still cause problems. If you want to use air dry clay, then use it to make an "outer shell" for any other plant pot.

if you want chia seeds to work, the bottle might have to be a little bigger than in the tiktok, also if the chia grows to full size, replant it and put it into another pot. but i just put moss and soil. any moss works.

A quick reminder for all friends of plantlife, nature and gardening: Peat (the main component of most gardening soils) contains much more fixed CO2 than trees and takes thousands of years to regrow. In order to win it, peatlands have to be dried out, destroying really neat ecosystems and releasing all that CO2 into the atmosphere. So keep your eyes open to find gardening soil without peat when you can

Please don’t use sphagnum, peat, or orchid moss. All of them are essential to wetlands which while being critically endangered are also responsible for about a third of the world’s oxygen. Peat moss takes hundreds of years to grow and develop so it is not sustainable. The harvesting method is also very harmful to the ecosystem. Coco coir is also not sustainable. It takes a lot of water to purify and separate it from the other layers of the coconut which is a waste of resources and pollutes the waterways with the runoff. It also has to be shipped halfway across the world which causes a lot of air pollution. The industry itself is also very unethical to their workers, they are responsible for a ton of deforestation and habitat damage and use the space to only plant miles of palm trees which destroys the biodiversity. Sustainable alternatives include but are not limited to: sand, bark, Leca, hydroponics, other kinds of mosses that you find yourself (it legit grows out of the crack in the sidewalk here in Canada), Spanish moss (has no nutrients so it is pretty much like planting is just water but it is more aesthetic you can also grow it on its own as an air plant), horticultural charcoal, compost, worm castings, and perlite (is not the most sustainable as it is finite but the mining industry creates minimal waste since it is mined at the surface and it requires minimal processing afterwards, it is better than vermiculite). Sphagnum and orchid moss can be sustainable if you purchase them from someone who grows it themselves, preferably locally to be even more eco friendly

Awesome that you're spreading awareness! Just a point- peat moss which is the byproduct of decomposed sphagnum moss is unsustainable like you said, but dried sphagnum moss can be a sustainable medium. It doesn't require the buildup that peat moss does, since it grows on the surface level. Just purchase it from sustainable moss farms :)
