I've been growing houseplants for much much longer than you've even been alive, and I'm with you on a number of these. Others I might like in other people's collections but never again for me. I will not grow marantas, calatheas, tradescantias (the indoor types) fittonias, pileas, certain peperomias, and then there are those that just bore me, like ZZ plant, money plant, dracaenas (not sansevierias which are now dracaena, stupidly, the actual regular species) or palms. Life is too short to grow stuff that we don't like or make us crazy.

I really do not have problems with Calatheas but Alocasias…I have wasted too much money on. The Alocasia that I have not had problems and seems more stable is the Watsoniana.

it depends primarily where you are living. If you live in West Indies, you can grow easily most of those indoor plants, even outside, but if you live in Paris, France, for exemple, it is very different ..... I love big leaves philodendron (ring of fire, melanochrysum), but they hate me and are slowly dying, it is painful to watch ..... I have more success with Anthurium (crystallinum and clarinervium) and I can watch big leaves growing ..... When I am bored with some plants, I give them away to friends or co-workers !

I love Syngoniums! I've had mine growing in low light, mid light, full sun in S. Texas which somehow they adored. They even survived the frigid winters of New England when all I had was a cheap $5 grow light aimed at them, and they're always just so happy and lovely.

Here in S. Georgia, spider plants are a common ground cover with hundreds in a bed. I dug up 3 healthy specimens. One for the aroid greenhouse, one for the bright kitchen window and the last for the sun porch. All dead in 3 months.😂

For spiderplants, I used to kill them all too until I noticed their colour fades when they're thirsty. So now I check the colour of their leaves to know if I need to water them. If it's bright green I won't water them, if it's faded green I will. They also kind of like to be snug in their pots. For the P. Verrucosum, mine started growing well, with beautiful leaves when I transferred it to sphagnum moss and put them on a sphagnum moss pole as well. I never let the moss dry out completely and they're alright now. No underwatering problem anymore!

I find it interesting that different people can grow different plants well or not well. I can barely keep a gloriosum alive but verrucosums thrive in my environment (thanks to semihydro). I've never been a fan of philodendron. Especially the upright ones. I've been leaning into plants that produce colorful and/or fragrant flowers. I love my oxalis as the leaves are pretty and they are prolific bloomers. I've discovered that orchids aren't difficult to grow, they're just different. I enjoy the maranta blooms and am looking forward to kalanchoe blooms. Snake plant blooms are also fabulous and smell like honeysuckle. I'm approaching the stage where if it doesn't have pretty flowers indoors then I'm not interested. Granted, my red aglaonema is so colorful it doesn't need pretty flowers.

Hi! New subscriber here - clicked on because of the title! I have most of the plants you mentioned and agree with 90% of your experience...the only syngonium I can keep alive and thriving is the Batik, which was a wishlist plant. It behaves entirely different than all the others I've had. (Maybe I just have a unicorn!) I actually love my Birken. I was very late to that party due to crazy prices, but found one for $17.99 at the GROCERY store and it's growing quite nicely and the variegation is holding on for a LONG time. It's nice and full, too. I can' even bring myself to speak of the PPP or the Paraiso! 😂 Thanks for sharing and keeping it real! 👏🏽🪴👏🏽

My "will not buy again" list was almost identical to yours! It's a relief to know other people struggle with the same houseplants. Thank you for that! I was also done with syngoniums until I found "red arrow" or syngonium erythrophyllum. So far, it's been an easy keeper, and it's beautiful, too. It hasn't lost any leaves yet😀! I've also recently bought a philodendron species that makes me smile every day😁! It's a philodendron squamiferum. I love its funny furry looking stems! It's another super easy keeper that is doing soooo well without needing any special attention. I hope these are available "across the pond!"

Love that you’re not apologizing for your opinions. I am actively trying to remind myself to stop apologizing for everything. It’s a tough habit to break. But we are better off when we celebrate how great it is when personal preferences vary. It keeps life interesting. I do love the Syngonium podophyllum albo-variegatum and Syngonium chiapense (especially the variegated versions). I’m not into the pink ones either. I love Pilea peperomioides but it did take a few attempts to grow one well. My cats love my Dracaena marginata too but they don’t want to mess with dead leaves. I’ve worked out if they’re out of reach, it’s fine but I get it. If I didn’t have them bc (before cats), I wouldn’t have them. Great video. Great energy. Thank you.

For me it’s calluna and bromelias. Callunas I guess are just better in the garden and bromelias I can’t figure out, and when they die, they die, you can’t propagate any part of them to salvage. But with spider plants I’ve done well. I had one years ago when I knew nothing about plants, it lived a long time and put out flowers and pups but then I got overwhelmed by other things in life and let all my plants wither. I have a little new one now and am hoping it grows big and lush 😊

Thank you for your video. Paraiso Verde is on my wish list. But I'll certainly think twice before getting one. I love my three PPP : one big sister and her two lil sis that was on the pot with her. I get so use to their temperamental majesties. I got them during the last bit of the PPP fever. I must recognize if I knew more about them, I would never buy them. Variegation is sooo random and rare with them. They, my euphorbia white ghost and my 2 ficus shivereana moonlight light taught me a good lesson : never ever buy a plant because it's "rare" and fashionable. I'm growing plants for years. But that didn't prevent me at all to be a fashion victim 😮

I agree with your experienced with pink princess, peperronia, berkin, milano very same to ours. Add it up like verrecosum, plowmanii the worst. But, for paraiso verde i guess you need to transfer it to a bigger pot when it has about five to six leaves and enough lighting the whole day. Ours they like the place where i put them at the veranda wherein it gets 1 to 2 hours morning sunlight. And dont forget good potting mixed. For Syngonium and alocasia, just simply throw it at your backyard it will grow massively.

I was very disappointed and just put the pot in the corner of the room and did not look at it for several months, when I finally decided to throw it away, I found that there were about 10 corns in the ground, I planted them in the soil and after two or three months, 5 of the 10 corns grew up😊. I kept the corns in warm 20C, and when they sprouted I gave them grew light and then the leaves became bigger

I’ve had it for about nine months. It almost died but now maybe it’s just strengthening it roots? 🤷‍♀️ I agree on the dappled or variegated type, looking sickly. My Paraiso Verde is new. Still acclimating it, and thinking about adding a second one to make the pot fuller. I’ve heard that heat and light are essential so I’ve got it on a heat mat fairly close to a grow light. It’s cold here in the Midwest US and I keep my house rather cool. We’ll see.🤞☘️🌿My cats also are fascinated by my Draceana and anything spiky leafed!🤣 Also agree on the Berlin; not drawn to the stripes or the growing pattern whatsoever.

I think it´s totally fair to try a few times and then just don't, it´s not worth stressing out over it. If you ever want you can try again, maybe in a few years or in a different home. I also love to see how different lists like this are for different persons, also "easy" house plant lists can vary a ton. If you keep on trying with plants over and over again, don´t forget to try different substrates, like semy-hydro/pon with a self watering pot, if you didn´t do that already. I have my spider-plant in that for example and so many people write that theirs needs to completely dry out in-between watering, well mine love to have wet lechuza pon roots. I´m not trying to get you to try again with any of them though! For your zebrina, I think they always have really long petioles, even the big ones. I have one with ridiculous long petioles, got it at a plant swap as a corm, because I could not transport one of the ones that already had grown, the petioles are just too long to transport via bike :D

Idk what he is doing but its somehow working lol I also just bought a Paraiso Verde and verrucosum (they were both pretty cheap) and i want them to do well soooo badly. I hope I can make it happen haha I also agree that Syngonium are prone to pests and the leaves die off super quickly when damaged, but they also grow back very reliably and really fast even when all the leaves are gone and theres only the stems & root system left. I also loooove the pink Syngoniums so much, especially the Milk Confetti

I wanted a PPP so bad for so long that when they finally became available in my area over the summer I bought at least 4. 😂 Now I know why they’re called princesses. It’s not because they’re pretty and pink. It’s because they’re so high maintenance and fussy. One of the plants I got is completely dead, another is propagating after almost dying, another one the tip keeps dying so it has so many offshoots it’s turning into a small bush, and the other is huge but minimal pink. And of course every single one of them does the Cinderella slipper thing and I have to go in and release stuck leaves. 🙄 I’m still not giving up yet. I just bought another one last month for a fresh start. 🤦🏾‍♀️😂

Sometimes I get impatient and end up ripping the new leaf off while trying to free it. I definitely plan on getting rid of most of them eventually but for now I’m having fun experimenting with them. I’m so happy they’re more available. I found some extremely variegated specimens at Lowe’s, Home Depot, and my fave plant shop.

Great video. I gave away a few pink princess too. My pilea died. I never joined the Birkin craze. Your accent is intriguing! I hear the British accent but not much at all. I’m so curious about this!

The only plant I own that’s on your list is the PPP and I’m not so upset that mine isn’t very pink but it definitely isn’t sizing up.. even after I chopped it.. but it’s alive and I am ok with it

I can't for the life of me keep Monstera or Calathea alive, but I'm not ready to give up yet. I love ferns, but I'm not ready to try again with those. I have completely given up on tradescantia. The variegated philodendron never really did it for me, especially since they cost an arm and a leg, and they are incredibly finicky. The biggest planty surprise for me is Caladium. They are doing really well, and I adore them, even if they do dormant in winter. I also love spider plants, but I'm an overwaterer, and end up drowning them.

I have resorted to treating my verrucosum to a caladium. Everytime it gets spider mites (it's a guarantee at least once a year), I chop it all the way back and let it start from scratch haha, and now I know what to expect from it, I'm at peace. But I mean I much prefer my el choco to the verrucosum for a more dramatic splash of red.

I enjoyed the video - such strong feelings lol! I thoroughly enjoy growing my money plants ( pilea peperomiodes) but pffft to each their own.🤷🏻‍♀️ I also like my birkin but I’ve had a few problems with it - I will keep it though. Spider plants…. Oh my, how do people keep them alive.🤦🏻‍♀️

When you mentioned the melano I was like “YES!” This plant is sooo sensitive. I sprayed mine with neem oil and it died. If you look at the new leaves they rip and they love to get caught coming out. It also gets fungus issues easily. I finally have two props that look ok, but they have to be inside, under a light and don’t even look at them. But I doubt I’ll ever have one that’s insta worthy lol 😂❤

That pinkish syngonium looked a bit like my cucumber plants at the end of the harvest season--sick and at the end of their lifespan.I wouldn't take it (or anything with this colouring) if I get paid for it!

Glad that I'm not the only one who struggled with it. I've tried spider plants since I started as beginner as they were always suggested to the ones who is just starting with plants. But no, they never survive, tried it in full sun, semi sun, semi shade and completely inside with dim light and none of them worked, it's been 3 years and I've tried Spider Plant 4 times and I'm just done with them for a long time! Ferns, I know ferns thrive in cold weather. But they shouldn't just die in hot weather. Tried it twice and both died slowly. I've seen them healthy in other gardening places. I'm not gonna touch this anytime soon And my pilea, it grew healthy and later died for unknown reason I didn't know. And I would like to try it again in future, hopefully soon and hope it survives.

Yes to so many of these. 1. Birkins. Just sit zombie like, doing nought. Same for Brasil's. 2. Any Pilea. Look at them funny and they become lemmings. 3. Spider plants. Pale, mushy and dull.

Spider plants also make my list of never again 😅 as did the Birkin and the pink princess philodendron's. I also agree with the whole pink syngonium thing. They just don't look that pretty. I will say, however, that I do have a syngonium strawberry ice that I've been lucky enough that the pink variegation(so far 🤞🤞) hasn't mixed with the green and gotten that muddy look. So many strawberry ice syngonium can look absolutely atrocious while a few look really beautiful. I got lucky with mine. If I ever find myself not loving a plant, I just give it away to someone who wants it. Though sometimes I'm stubborn and just keep trying because, dang it, I want to love it😅😂

I love my syngoniums because i can neglect them and they just don't care 😂 I also had one pushed against a monstera which was RIDDLED with thrips and the thrips completely ignored it, I wonder if thrips have preference over their syngonium varieties! I wont try any more peperomia, they just never seem that happy in my care. The only ones I have now have sentimental value, but I won't be overly bothered once they die...

I agree with spider plants, verracosums and pilea. My teardrop is finally happy but i ignore her. Just water occasionally. All orchids. I have 6 left out oif my original collection but they just wont flower again. Whatever i try ,so they either go to my daughter or the dustbin. Oh and finally the most common calathea, loves me and keep growing and growing and propargating, growing etc but i dont like it. Its boring. I now have 4 of them. Got to go, I am done with it.

Except for the Chinese Money Tree & Syngoniums (which I've been OK with so far), I'm with you on the rest of your list....the hype is over! I've never owned a Melanochrysum, Verrucosum or a Paraiso Verde and NEVER will. And I'd like to add the Silver Sword to that list....have never been able to get it to grow well let alone size up (and I'm in Sydney where the climate is more temperate than the UK). No one can say you're wrong cos it's your opinion, your experience. Thanks for sharing them and making some of us feel like we are not the only ones who have struggled with these ones 🤦🏻‍♀🤩

I think we all have different environments. I have tried plants that did not survive. My house does not have the best conditions for certain plants, so they die. With all the options available, I opt for the plants that thrive and look good. I do have spider plants. They are in my basement to just survive the winter. I will clean them up this spring. Then they will spend the summer outside where they look fine in a more shady environment. It is also a matter of economics. I do not want to spend my money on that just go down the drain.
